Adult-only camping and glamping within striking distance of Totnes and the South Devon coast.

Spacious camping pitches, a quirky repurposed circus wagon, and a retro-styled cabin await guests at Gatcombe Park Farm, as do the alpacas happily grazing in the field adjacent to this one-of-a-kind campsite. Located just outside the historical South Devon town of Totnes, the English Riviera and its beaches are within reach, as are the fluffy heads of the farm’s adorable animal friends. There aren’t many sites that let you enjoy a cream tea next to an alpaca herd. It's an experience you’ll quickly get accustomed to here.

Fourteen grass pitches are situated in Gatcombe’s south-facing paddock along with spaces for motorhomes, all kept strictly adults-only for a more grown-up holiday. The glamping options are wonderfully unique, exemplified by a traditional showman’s circus wagon that has been completely restored and modernised, now a self-contained tiny home with a spacious living area along with scenic outdoor decking. The cosy timber cabin and the tipi next to a landscaped pond – complete with a swinging bench from which to admire it – round out its luxury camping alternatives, and it’s well-equipped with shared amenities such as heated showers and flushing toilets. The south-facing field means that you’ll be in prime position for the sun, and a barbecue is provided for glampers to take full advantage of the weather.

Two popular country pubs can be reached in under a 10-minute walk, while the River Dart is a little further on – slip in for some wild swimming if you’re brave enough, or bring your kayak to explore this 47-mile stretch of water. The town of Totnes is a short drive away, a lively hub of small independent retailers, cafés, and restaurants. But with this being South Devon, chances are you’re in the market for some sea and sunshine – so it’s a good thing some of the region’s best beaches are on your doorstep. Paignton and Torquay are within a 20-minute drive away, these seaside towns being an ideal destination for a day out, while the gorgeous, award-winning countryside beach of Broadsands is also close by.

Motorhome Pitch up-to VW Crater
Unhelpful and unflexible
We never got to stay at the campsite but were disappointed with the owner's response to our request. We had booked and paid to stay for 2 nights last weekend and very frustratingly, our camper broke down on the way back from a trip the weekend before. We took it straight to our mechanic but he warned that it was unlikely to be fixed by the time we needed it again. I checked the campsite's cancellation policy and it said we wouldn't get a refund and we were fine with that, all we asked was that a credit could be held in our name to use another time. We felt this was a reasonable request by not asking for money back and because it was due to circumstances out of our control. Disappointingly Philip said that it wasn't possible because they 'only operate a small site'. We thought that this was irrelevant and if anything made it easier to do. Whilst I understand that sites need their rules it would have been nice if they'd shown some flexibility. It feels greedy and has put us off of staying in future.

Camping next to Alpacas!
Easy to find, in a great location with lovely views and sunsets. Great to see Alpacas next to the site, babies too when we were there! Two great pubs within easy reach, one by foot the other 5 mins max by car. Highly recommend!

Showman’s wagon
Gatcombe park farm Glamping
We had a great 2 days/nights at Gatcombe park farm. Booked both the showman’s wagon and the retro cabin so that we had sole use of the toilet and shower. Both very spacious and with all the home comforts you could need. The Alpaca experience was great fun and very informative with our hosts very knowledgeable. We would definitely visit again and would recommend to friends and family

Gatcombe Park Farm Camping Pitches
Amazing Alpaca Chillzone
An amazing campsite run by really kind and dedicated people. Loved greeting the Alpacas in the morning and enjoyed the fancy bathroom. We were camping and it was wet but looking forward to next time in drier weather. Great location for Totnes.

Food and drink

The Pig and Whistle is an easy five-minute walk up the road from the site. A traditional roadside pub with a large outdoor seating area, it also boasts a good reputation locally on account of its award-winning food. A 10-minute walk northwest of the site is Tally Ho, a country pub tucked away in Littlehempson village with an ‘olde worlde’ aesthetic, also award-winning with its classic pub menu. Head into Totnes for some relaxed fine dining at Gather, on the pricey side but well worth it thanks to a menu consisting of ‘foraged’ ingredients from the fields, shore, and local rivers.

Nearby attractions

The River Dart is accessible in a 15-minute walk, a huge stretch of water in which you can go wild swimming or take a kayak/stand-up paddleboard to explore it. For exploration by foot, Dartmoor National Park is a 15-minute drive, an expansive 386 square miles of diverse landscape. Cyclists are encouraged to bring their bikes, while the Dartmoor rivers provide plenty of trout and salmon for fishing. Totnes is a great spot for shopping, only a five-minute drive from the site and boasting a number of independent retailers to support, along with art galleries to peruse and a market. Beachgoers can take a trip out to Torquay, Babbacombe, and Paignton, all within 25 minutes away, or further out is Banthanm beach, an award-winning stretch of sand that’s an ideal spot for watersports including surfing.
