South Town Camping opened for a month in 2018 to see how guests would take to its private 10-pitch site. Tucked away in North Devon's Arlington estate, amid twenty-plus miles of footpaths and bridleways, this is a campsite designed by committed campers and it shows.The grass pitches are spacious, with paths leading to them mown into the wildflower meadows, all set within six acres kept peaceful (and safe for the kids!) by the absence of cars — simply roll your belongings to your tent with the help of a super-sized wheelbarrow. At the centre of the camping fields hay meadows are left to grow throughout the summer, providing an almost-wild aesthetic befitting of the sprawling surrounding woodland of which you'll enjoy uninterrupted views. Watch the sunset to the west right from your tent and, on clear nights, you'll have an enviable spot to take in the starry skies. If you don't fancy pitching a tent a shepherd's hut is also available, a cosy option for couples with outdoor seating for those nights cooking by the fire.Given that this is a campsite belonging to the environmentally-conscious South Town Farm, your time staying at the site will be as eco-friendly as possible. Your hosts take care of 200 acres of this estate, having National Trust tenancy of South Town and managing its grasslands, which remain unimproved to maintain the unique biodiversity of the region. In keeping with this ethos, your available amenities also won't impact the land — there are composting loos, a gas-powered warm shower and cold drinking water pumped directly from the mains to the sheltered washing-up hut.Despite South Town Camping's position out in the sticks, it's within excellent reach of its neighbouring beaches, all a short drive away. Woolacombe beach will likely be the first port of call for sun-chasers, given its reputation as not only one of the best beaches in the West Country, but one of the best in the world — two miles of sloping sand facing the Atlantic Ocean, and a favourite for families and surfers with thousands descending upon it each year. Little Harford Lower Woodland is set in a property of just over 6 acres. The woodland here at Little Harford is a tranquil place for people wanting to find peace and quiet in a back to nature experience. A small river meanders through the bottom of the lower woodland which can occasionally come up to the top of the bank with lots of rain. A winding path leads down through the woodland to where the land levels out at the water meadow area of the woodland. A family of buzzards live in the valley and you can often hear owls, pheasants and wild birds. A certain degree of fitness is needed as there is no vehicle access and wheelbarrows are available to help move your gear. There is parking at the entrance to the lower woodland on hard standing. A compost toilet is available for all No.2’s and mindful wild peeing is encouraged. Tap water is available from an outside tap at the property for drinking water. There is a washing up area (eco products provided) and a solar-powered gas fired shower. Campfires are allowed and seasoned wood can be purchased at a small extra cost. Nearest village of Tedburn St Mary with a local pub and the village shop is 1 ½ miles away. The nearest town of Crediton is 3 miles away with plenty of supermarkets, cafes, pubs and restaurants. Dartmoor is close by with Fingle Bridge just a 20 minute drive. We only offer a very limited number of camping spots at any time to preserve the tranquility for everyone. We are lucky enough to have the surfing beaches of North Devon nearby, and Westward Ho! is a 20 minutes drive away. You'll find equipment hire and surf lessons and a sea pool filled by the tide. With fields, woodlands and a stream running through the middle, there's space for family, friends and dogs too, find your spot and get exploring, there are no designated pitches here. Nestled between Dartmoor National Park to the south and the dramatic Cornish coastline to the north you will not be short of a story to share around the campfire.
It's not just people, as neighbours to a County Wildlife Site, we are very excited to discover the wildlife that also calls our patch home and help protect some rare habitats: we are custodians to a small patch of extremely rare Temperate Rainforest and Culm Grassland that is a nature-lovers' paradise.
The closest you’ll get to a wash is a splash in the on-site stream, the only undercover space is our small, communal field shelter and when it comes to drinking water – come prepared WE HAVE NO DRINKING WATER ON SITE!
What we lack in luxuries, we make up for with freedom! Space to wander, play games, stargaze and generally have fun however that looks to you:

All water comes from our own borehole, providing pure Jurassic spring water filtered through 180-million-year-old rocks — crisp, mineral-rich, and flowing throughout the site.
Just 20 minutes from the coast, we offer exclusive night fossil hunts to what many call the best beach in the world for finding golden pyritized ammonites, revealed under torchlight and tide and due to it being at night you get the whole beach to yourself.

Sauna and river swimming very invigorating, children enjoyed the trampolines and the dog loved the freedom.

We loved the campingsite by Jonathan. We were the only ones there so if you like peace and quiet this is the place to be. We had a lovely spot with a lot of sun and a view on the river. We could not always swim with the low tides but when it was high it was great. Our host Jonathan helped us with recommandations for things to do in the neighbourhood. We did nice walks and went to a castle. We would come back here in the future.

Absolute gem of a camping site. Beautiful, astonishingly quiet (except for the birdsong), my sons were thrilled at being able to fish at the bottom of the field, camp fires are allowed and the shower is so cute- in a converted horsebox! If you like seclusion this is the place for you. Maybe no one else does, as we were the only people there for several days, and were only ever joined by two more parties of people.

absolutely fantastic campsite, we loved everything about it! It was so peaceful I stunning countryside and we mostly had the site to ourselves. The children loved playing endlessly in the stream and they enjoyed the play area and stroking the loveable dog; Bear.
The toilets were pristine. We were fine getting up the steep slope but it would be difficult for anyone with mobility issues.
We can't wait to come back next year!

We had our own, private pitch right beside the river and 200M away from anyone else. Beautifully quiet and secluded with a private beach for direct access to the river. However, be aware that there are NO facilities - no sinks, no showers and (importantly) no phone signal - so if that's what you're looking for, this ain't the site for you.

Excellent campsite, quite literally off the beaten track. Perfect if you're seeking some peace and quiet off grid. Loads of space with options to camp close to others or choose something more isolated (explore the site fully before you pitch). Facilities are very basic, but the trampoline, sauna and hot tub next to the river are excellent additions and make for great entertainment and a good way to wake up in the morning. Charles and his family made us feel very welcome and supplied a potential cleansing tea tree, lavender and salt mix for washing and sauna. Highly recommend visiting Bantham Beach, which is a 20 minute drive away.

Absolutely stunning spot to camp. Beautiful views, well apart from other campers. Clean compost toilet with toilet roll and hand gel available - and a sink with soap just across in the horsebox. Excellent hot shower in the horse box - with only 1 spider seen thankfully, as I really needed a shower after our free mud bath spa treatment (pay attention to the tide times when kayaking 😂)
Jonathan was very responsive and came straight out to show us how to get to the river.
