Moorland Holt is a private hideaway nestling in a corner of south east Dartmoor, where a stunning 4m lotus belle tent offers a unique camping experience in a peaceful meadow glade surrounded by woodland, adjacent to open moor. This will be an offgrid experience but with the luxury of a 'proper' toilet and shower.
It is the only unit so you get the whole place to yourself, and the space includes a field kitchen equiped with a gas burner and cold box, along with a firepit for BBQ, campfire cooking, or just toasting marshmallows under Dartmoor's famous night sky.
Moorland Holt is a nature-lovers paradise, home to a wide variety of insects and birds, as well as resident tawny owls, and with fallow, roe and red deer, badgers and foxes regularly passing through. Stoats and lizards have also been known to make an appearance.
Our location is secluded and peaceful, ideal for walkers and those who want to be immersed in the wilds of Dartmoor, but is easy to reach from the A38 (Devon Expressway), and is just 10 minutes from the historic stannery town of Ashburton. It's 15 minutes walk to Buckland Beacon with views to the coast, and stunning night skies, and just 10 minutes walk to Ausewell Wood, one of Dartmoor's rare temperate rainforests ( looked after by the Woodland Trust and English Heritage) which includes wild, rugged wood and heath with dramatic rocky outcrops.
As well as nearby Ashburton, with a 12th century inn and award winning restaurants, just 10 minutes in the opposite direction is the moor town of Widecombe, an ideal destination for a morning's walk and pub lunch.
Landmark tors are also within a 10-minute drive, including one of Dartmoor's most popular attractions Haytor, and neighbouring Hound Tor. The River Dart is 20 minutes drive away, the famous medieval clapper bridge less than half an hour and Devon's stunning coast within 40 minutes drive.
Our Moorland Holt lotus belle tent is kitted out with a standard double bed but an extra air mattress could be added for a third person on request, but please note the site is not suitable for young children. One dog would be welcome but would need to be on a lead or tethered at all times to protect wildlife and livestock as the site is not secure.

Due to the pristine nature of the lotus tent and the fact that we have livestock there are NO DOGS ALLOWED on bookings.
The land itself is the attraction. Natural wild swimming on site, a Neolithic stone row a thousand metres from the door, and unlimited moorland walking from the gate. The Dartmoor Inn at Merrivale is a 750 metre walk — an acclaimed open-fire restaurant serving exceptional meat, well worth the short walk across the moor.

The woodland here at Little Harford is a tranquil place for people wanting to find peace and quiet in a back to nature experience. A small river meanders through the bottom of the lower woodland which can occasionally come up to the top of the bank with lots of rain. A winding path leads down through the woodland to where the land levels out at the water meadow area of the woodland. A family of buzzards live in the valley and you can often hear owls, pheasants and wild birds. A certain degree of fitness is needed as there is no vehicle access and wheelbarrows are available to help move your gear. There is parking at the entrance to the lower woodland on hard standing. A compost toilet is available for all No.2’s and mindful wild peeing is encouraged. Tap water is available from an outside tap at the property for drinking water. There is a washing up area (eco products provided) and a solar-powered gas fired shower. Campfires are allowed and seasoned wood can be purchased at a small extra cost. Nearest village of Tedburn St Mary with a local pub and the village shop is 1 ½ miles away. The nearest town of Crediton is 3 miles away with plenty of supermarkets, cafes, pubs and restaurants. Dartmoor is close by with Fingle Bridge just a 20 minute drive. We only offer a very limited number of camping spots at any time to preserve the tranquility for everyone. South Town Camping opened for a month in 2018 to see how guests would take to its private 10-pitch site. Tucked away in North Devon's Arlington estate, amid twenty-plus miles of footpaths and bridleways, this is a campsite designed by committed campers and it shows.The grass pitches are spacious, with paths leading to them mown into the wildflower meadows, all set within six acres kept peaceful (and safe for the kids!) by the absence of cars — simply roll your belongings to your tent with the help of a super-sized wheelbarrow. We loved the campingsite by Jonathan. We were the only ones there so if you like peace and quiet this is the place to be. We had a lovely spot with a lot of sun and a view on the river. We could not always swim with the low tides but when it was high it was great. Our host Jonathan helped us with recommandations for things to do in the neighbourhood. We did nice walks and went to a castle. We would come back here in the future.

Absolute gem of a camping site. Beautiful, astonishingly quiet (except for the birdsong), my sons were thrilled at being able to fish at the bottom of the field, camp fires are allowed and the shower is so cute- in a converted horsebox! If you like seclusion this is the place for you. Maybe no one else does, as we were the only people there for several days, and were only ever joined by two more parties of people.

absolutely fantastic campsite, we loved everything about it! It was so peaceful I stunning countryside and we mostly had the site to ourselves. The children loved playing endlessly in the stream and they enjoyed the play area and stroking the loveable dog; Bear.
The toilets were pristine. We were fine getting up the steep slope but it would be difficult for anyone with mobility issues.
We can't wait to come back next year!

We had our own, private pitch right beside the river and 200M away from anyone else. Beautifully quiet and secluded with a private beach for direct access to the river. However, be aware that there are NO facilities - no sinks, no showers and (importantly) no phone signal - so if that's what you're looking for, this ain't the site for you.

Excellent campsite, quite literally off the beaten track. Perfect if you're seeking some peace and quiet off grid. Loads of space with options to camp close to others or choose something more isolated (explore the site fully before you pitch). Facilities are very basic, but the trampoline, sauna and hot tub next to the river are excellent additions and make for great entertainment and a good way to wake up in the morning. Charles and his family made us feel very welcome and supplied a potential cleansing tea tree, lavender and salt mix for washing and sauna. Highly recommend visiting Bantham Beach, which is a 20 minute drive away.

Absolutely stunning spot to camp. Beautiful views, well apart from other campers. Clean compost toilet with toilet roll and hand gel available - and a sink with soap just across in the horsebox. Excellent hot shower in the horse box - with only 1 spider seen thankfully, as I really needed a shower after our free mud bath spa treatment (pay attention to the tide times when kayaking 😂)
Jonathan was very responsive and came straight out to show us how to get to the river.
Would definitely return!

Our stay at Bowhayes was wonderful! The tenting pitch area was perfect…quiet, peaceful and private. Howard and Fiona are so friendly and very helpful. I would highly recommend staying at their farm! The facilities were great too… covered cafe area, basic kitchen and sink areas and washroom and an amazing outdoor shower!
