Welcome to Furnace Brook, a tranquil 60-acre Ecosystem Restoration Community tucked away in the rolling countryside of East Sussex. Here, peace, wildlife, and connection to nature come first. Whether you’re waking up in a handcrafted lakeside cabin or camping beneath the stars, this is a place to slow down, breathe deeply, and rediscover calm. At the heart of the land lies our beautiful lake, surrounded by native trees and wildflowers. Herons, dragonflies, and kingfishers visit often, and misty mornings give way to glowing sunsets reflected on the water. Our cabins blend simple comfort with rustic charm — natural materials and wide windows that open to birdsong. For campers, we have rural private pitches or spacious and communal spaces. It’s quiet here — no loud music, no generators, just the crackle of a fire and the sounds of nature at night. Furnace Brook is part of a working Ecosystem Restoration Community. Every stay supports rewilding and soil regeneration, helping wildlife and woodland return to the landscape. Guests are welcome to wander our trails, learn about the restoration work, or simply enjoy being surrounded by thriving nature. We also brew our own small-batch Furnace Brook Beer, made with local ingredients — the perfect companion for a lakeside sunset or a cosy evening by the fire. If you’re looking for stillness, beauty, and a genuine connection to the natural world, Furnace Brook offers it in abundance. Come to rest, reflect, and experience life at nature’s pace. Woodland glamping near Ramsgate guide

Where to go

Kent Downs

With woodland campsites, glamping huts, view-laden caravan parks, and seasonal pop-up camps, the Kent Downs AONB makes a spectacular inland escape from Ramsgate (it’s under an hour away). The tranquil landscape flows from chalk ridges to ancient forests and Dover’s White Cliffs, covering 880 square kilometres. Walk some of the 250-km North Downs Way (once a pilgrimage route), go biking and horse riding, and pop into farm shops for Kentish goodies.

Along the Kent Coast

Spreading north and south from Ramsgate, the Kent coast is packed with beautifully positioned campsites, glamping spots, and holiday parks overlooking chalk cliffs and the English Channel. Explore bohemian Margate, buzzy Deal, arty Folkestone, wild Botany Bay, or weekend favourite Whitstable, then dive into the coastal walks and water sports.

High Weald AONB

An hour’s drive southwest of Ramsgate you’ll reach the High Weald AONB, a jewel among southern England’s protected natural spaces. Cobbled villages and chalk-dusted cliffs give way to 1,500 square km of undulating heathland, streams, and wildlife-rich forests, making it an idyllic area for camping and outdoor adventure. Kayaking, horse riding, hiking, cycling, and rock-climbing are big draws here, as is the literary heritage of Ashdown Forest.

South Downs

Sprawling between Winchester and Eastbourne (and about two hours’ drive from Ramsgate), the South Downs National Park rolls over 1,500 square km of classic southeastern countryside. Wonderful hikes run along the well-marked, long-distance South Downs Way, with views disappearing out to sea. You can pitch up everywhere from bell tents on working farms to beachside caravan parks.

When to go

Spring (March to May) is the best time to hike, camp and explore with trees in bloom and warmer weather, though there are no sunshine guarantees. Summer brings (generally) the warmest weather and beachy fun (with water sports and more), but also high-season crowds, especially on the coast. September and October can be a lovely time for quieter outdoor adventuring as the countryside shows off its autumn colours. Sidestep the crowds by avoiding bank holidays (especially in May and August) and travelling during the week.

Know before you go

  • Ramsgate has excellent rail links with London (one to two hours), as well as buses and trains to/from Margate, Folkestone, Deal and other coastal towns. For the surrounding parks and forests, you’ll need your own wheels.
  • There are plenty of supermarkets, specialised delis, and shops selling outdoors gear in Ramsgate, as well as cafes, pubs, and restaurants near the parks.
  • Book all campsite slots and other accommodation well in advance, especially from May to September.
  • Some protected nature reserves don’t permit camping, but often have reliable campsites nearby.
