Our 17 acre Farm is set deep within the beautiful South Downs National Park on the outskirts of the quiet village of Milland (near Liphook) in rural West Sussex (close to its border with Hampshire and Surrey). We have direct access to an excellent bridleway and footpath network through peaceful open countryside and quiet lanes as well as being on the Serpent Tail and close to the South Downs Way. We absolutely loved our stay at Jane’s shepherd’s hut. it was the perfect off-grid escape from our busy lives. The hot tub and outdoor pizza oven were definite highlights and made the trip feel extra special. Jane and her husband were incredibly welcoming, accommodating, and quick to respond whenever we had a question or needed anything. The hut is also ideally located; peaceful and secluded, yet close enough for lovely walks/run and a nearby pub for a quick pint. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing countryside getaway.

We didn't bring anything to sit on (as we had taken public transport) and she was kind enough to lend us some benches for us to use on our patch. She ensured that our wood was kept dry for our campfire and that she was within reach should we need anything. We would definitely return again. Thank you for a lovely evening.

We had the most wonderful stay at this little countryside getaway! From the moment we arrived, Jane was absolutely incredible - so kind, welcoming, and full of helpful information about the lodge and surrounding area. She’d thought of everything, leaving clear instructions for how everything worked, which made our stay effortless and relaxing. The thoughtful touches really made it special - from the freshly baked bread to the delicious shortbread cookies, everything felt homely and made with love. The setting itself was pure peace and quiet, surrounded by nothing but cows, trees, and the soft sounds of nature. It was the perfect place to switch off, breathe deeply, and just enjoy the calm of the countryside. We honestly didn’t want to leave - a hidden gem that we’d return to in a heartbeat!

Matt met us on arrival and helped carry our bags to the The Shepherds Hut which is well fitted out , nicely decorated , lovely and clean, and well equipped. Nice hot shower and towel rail. Me and my partner stayed at Chalky downs for 2 nights for a little get away ✨. Sharen’s land is beautiful, everyone is so friendly and we even got to order a sausage bacon and egg bap with tea and coffee in the morning! ☀️. We went into Brighton town for a bit of shopping and to see the sea, only a 14 minute drive and we parked in the station car park 👏🏼. Would 100% recommend and will definitely be going back! Where to go

Windsor and Maidenhead

With parks, moors, and the River Thames right on the doorstep of Royal Windsor, there's no need to travel far to get a glimpse of the great British outdoors. Mobile and caravan parks line the river's banks, while family-friendly sites such as Hurley Riverside Park offer easy access to the home counties as well as the Thames Path National Trail.

Reading

Also on the Thames Path, this historic market town is best known for its annual music festival, though its abundant farmland is home to many privately run campsites that draw visitors year-round. Campgrounds and holiday parks serve as outdoor oases in the city's vicinity, many known for kid-friendly pitches. Reading can be reached from Windsor in half an hour by road or train.

Chiltern Hills AONB

Active adventurers are sure to love the hills, fields, and woodlands that make up this Area of Natural Beauty, with a range of rambling and riding routes to choose from. There's even an annual walking festival! Several working farms offer private camping, while the scenic spots of Ashridge Estate, Ivinghoe Beacon, or Radnage Valley make for stunning sights to wake up to. The gateway town of High Wycombe is about a 25-minute drive away, or 90 minutes on public transport via Slough.

South Downs National Park

Home to countless working farms and all manner of natural retreats, the expansive and diverse South Downs National Park is a camper's paradise, just 90 minutes south of Windsor by car. You can easily explore the region's chalk hills, wooded heaths, and villages by following the South Downs Way National Trail on foot, by bike, or on horseback.

When to go

Though summer tends to bring the best weather for any outdoor pursuit in England, the vibrant colours of autumn or dramatic frosts of winter certainly have their own charms. June, July, and August are often very busy around Windsor, especially during the Reading Festival and Royal Ascot weekends.

Public transport is generally camper-friendly, but if travelling with gear, it's wise to avoid peak times—especially if connecting in London.
Some rural campsites are quite remote, so it can be useful to have a vehicle.
