Originally inhabited by Algonquin peoples the land was cleared for farming and they erected several building including a large German style hand hewn timber frame barn which still stands and is used today. The farm house was built in the 1910 and the original log cabins have been reframed into artistic buildings. It is wild to look around and imagine what life was like before now in a time when the land had no boundry lines and was traversed by indigenous peoples of this area. The cottage is at the edge of a large wilderness area. We supply an ultra-safe large canoe with paddles and lifejackets. It's an easy and fun 15 minute paddle to reach the cottage. The cottage is an artistic gem on a safe and quiet lake with beavers and loons and numerous bird species -- owls, herons, hawks, ospreys, and many migratory songbirds. In over 20 years of experience on the lake, we've seen no bears. It's a cosy three-room place with a small bedroom (8x12) with an antique double bed; a main room (16 x12) with a single bed; and a kitchen (8X12). Sleeps 3, max. Access to the cottage is up a short set of irregular stone stairs from the lake. This could be an impediment for elderly or frail people. The lake is not a private lake. There are other cottages. But it's a very quiet lake and often there's no one else there. The landscape is very similar to Algonquin Park's. North Kawartha is famous as the birthplace of the canoe. This is a thinly-populated landscape of rugged granite bluffs, thickly-forested hills and valleys, and gorgeous lakes that remain quiet and peaceful even during the hottest summer weeks. This place was made by and for lovers, artists, poets, musicians, dreamers, writers, environmentalists, ecologists, escapists...and their children. Enjoy!

Learn more about this land: Rustic bunkie located on 2 acres, is nestled among the trees beside a small, crystal clear lake. With 700 ft of untouched shoreline, privacy is second to none. From this lake, you can access 3 other lakes by provided canoe/kayak without portage. The site is 35 min. from Algonquin Park and 11 km from MKC, the world-famous white water paddling centre. 10x10 main floor with sleeping loft. Solar power provides lighting & a propane furnace for cool nights. Solar lights outside provide ambient lighting-may be turned off if preferred. The call of the loons & the barred owl will be your lullaby as you drift off to sleep after a day of hiking, paddling, or swimming.  There is no running water, you will have to bring your own drinking water. You will need to bring everything you require for cooking, eating and washing dishes. There is no sink, stove, or BBQ on site. As the site is off-grid, there are no appliances. There is a split log bench beside the self-contained fire pit.  Please bring your own firewood, matches/lighter,  and/or firestarter materials. Small fires only please, as this is a well-treed location. Fires must be extinguished prior to going to bed — there is a bucket by the firepit. If you are wondering if something is there, I suggest you reach out to check with me before arrival. There is a new private outhouse on site. The outhouse is past the bunkie along the path. Solar lights work with the flick of a switch — one switch by the door, one by the bed. You have access to 2 kayaks and 1 canoe, 2 adult lifejackets. These are located on the waterfront between the bunkie and the house @260 Matcheski Road. Please return these as you found them after each use. They are shared with the guests at the house. It is a natural shoreline at the bunkie, with a sandy bottom — pretty good swimming, actually! Absolutely no harsh chemicals/detergents in the water! Please leave the site tidy and as you found it. Take your garbage and recycling. This is a small lakeside community —  no loud music, please. Respect the solitude!  Please respect the natural setting — leave it as you found it, do not cut live growth.

Sit by the pond, sit by the creek, sit in the waterfall, sit out at Blueberry Hill for a pleasant breeze or up on SunStar Ridge for some nightly star gazing or lay back in a hammock or on zero gravity chairs 1 Bunkie on a hill overlooking the pond and 2 private tent sites, one at Boot Hill and one in the Field of Dreams. Each site has a fire pit and a compostable toilet and there is a compostable toilet in an outhouse on the property for the bunkie. Great for canoes, kayaks, bird and wildlife watching with spectacular star gazing. This property was part of an old homestead and as such I am still finding things so please respect the caution tape. Some finds are treasures (European Grapes, Bergamot, French Roses, Asparagus, Rhubarb, Ramps, Fiddle-heads) and others not so much. I am re purposing what I can and collecting the rest for disposal as I nurture this land back to what it was meant to be, paradise. There is an outdoor shower available as well. And if you like to prepare fresh fish-based dishes, Mosque Lake has great trout and perch fishing. If you like to follow the winds of winter, take a pair of snowshoes available at the cabin and go across the lake and have a winter picnic. Set up your fishing shack outside your door, open a hole and fish! *Winter roads require an AWD or 4WD vehicle to access Juniper Cabin. Parking is available on-site for all guests. If you bring your boat, there is parking for your trailer as well. *Power outages due to storms are always a possibility in cottage country. Typically, power is restored within a few hours if this should happen. Cottages will be stocked with candles and flashlights for guest safety. *Internet/WIFI access is available at the property- connect to our WIFI and work from the cabins. * If you’d like to bring your own boat, there is a free boat launch on the lake, and we can support docking your boat. -- In case of emergency, the nearest hospital is: Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital, 33 Drummond St W, Perth, ON K7H 2K1 Guest are welcome to bring their own firewood. The first crate of firewood is included with your stay, and each additional crate is $5. The river flowing through… YES, you can sit in and enjoy! Sooo refreshing, for both my dog and myself, as it was very hot during my stay. Natalie was very welcoming to both of us and My puppy truly enjoyed the loving attention given. It’s called the Blue Heron but we also experienced deer crossing in the water, beaver and maybe otters/mink playing in the water, a cute fox, a raccoon and a porcupine! Definitely a beautiful spot for relaxing! Thank you Natalie! 💝

Weekend Trip to Glamping - Intimate Cabin & Campsites

We enjoyed our stay at Choleena’s so much! It’s a beautiful and comfortable place, very private and enjoyable for anyone who loves spending time in forests and lakes. The cabin is super cozy and there’s plenty of lawn games to occupy yourselves with or just taking it easy in a hammock. I wholeheartedly recommend it :)

Everything was amazing. The cabin fit 4 people beautifully. The lake was great and being able to use the canoe and kayak without an extra charge was appreciated! We had a great time!

We are long time tenters, but this year we decided to try something different and we found this campground with the mini cabins. I will stay here at the outset that we enjoyed this place very much and we stayed for six nights. The cabins are very well kept and clean and also very private. Fortunately for us, there were no other campers on site when we were there but even if the campsite were full you would still have plenty of privacy. The owners are also super friendly and helpful. We felt that the location was very Central to all of the other day activities that we carried out. We were able to visit several provincial parks during our stay and used this campsite as our base. We earlier had purchased a season pass for the provincial parks which paid for itself after just a few days. You can drive in several directions from this campsite and enjoy wonderful scenery, as well as several provincial parks. A brief ride into Bancroft if you want to re-enter civilization for a while and grab a quick coffee. Bancroft also has a wonderful little park right in the middle of town. Maynooth itself has several nice little shops that you can pick up some souvenirs or other essential items. Locals are warm and friendly. Bring extra water with you or pick it up at the entrance on the way into the campsite. Also, the mattress in the bed area may not be to everyone's liking and you may need some extra padding,so keep that in mind. We highly recommend this place.

A nice and cozy spot to stay. The bunkie is comfortable and bigger than you'd expect, it really is a good base for adventures in the region. Quiet and private as well. We'll be coming back I'm sure!

10/10 will absolutely recommend it. We had peaceful quiet time at the bunkie. Natalie had a screened gazebo next to the waterfall so it was quite serene. She also provided us extra utensils to use on the bbq.

Weekend Trip to Big Rock Eco Retreat & Campgrounds

Such a beautiful cabin and gorgeous land. We had such a great time building campfires, eating smores and walking around the property. The sky at night was amazing. Jason was very helpful and answered any questions we had in a timely manner. Bonus points: Rocky the dog is extremely cute. Would definitely return!

Corey's cabin exceeded every expectation. From the moment we walked in, the space felt warm and intentional; the shiplap walls, wood-burning stove, and beautiful macramé décor gave it a cozy, curated feel without losing that true cabin charm. The kitchen was surprisingly well-equipped. The property itself is absolutely stunning. The river views through the trees were like something out of a painting ; we sat by the water for hours. Even on a foggy day it felt magical, with the string lights strung between the pines adding a fairytale touch. We even celebrated my birthday here and it felt like the perfect setting for it. Peaceful, private, and surrounded by nature. The wood stove kept things cozy all night, and the firewood was ready to go. If you're looking for a place to truly unplug and reset, this is it. Highly recommend!

What a beautiful land- truly grateful for the opportunity to stay at Big Rock Eco Resort. Thank you to Jason and Susie for being wonderful hosts. The Cabin itself was beautiful and has more than enough amenities to enjoy a stay comfortably. Directions were clear and easily understood. The experience was very peaceful and enjoyable, literally so quiet out there. Lots of trails to explore and we were able to skate on the lake and the hot tub was a big bonus. A big thank you to Rocky and Jason, who helped my guarded dog socialize so he could enjoy some play with a pup friend! We all had an amazing time, will be returning in the near future!

2 nights at Natural Joy! Cosy Canoe Cottage

Paul's cabin is so cozy and situated within such a stunning and remote area. We loved canoeing around Ragged Lake and looking the beautiful big faces of the Canadian Shield. We also loved just starring out at the lake and looking at the birds, the trees and the stars. My partner and I had such a lovely time and will definitely be visiting again!
