When to go

As the biggest population center in the Charlevoix region, you’ll find most amenities open year-round in La Malbaie because the winter season and many ski hills in the area are such a big draw. To observe whales in the St. Lawrence River, the best time is from May to October. The city can be very busy in July and August.

Know before you go

  • Most tourism operators will be fluent in (or at least have some) English, but French is Quebec’s first language. Being able to say a few words or phrases in French will be welcomed, and having a translation app on your phone may prove useful.
  • You really can’t explore this region without a vehicle, and there are plenty of places to charge an electric vehicle around the city.
  • La Malbaie has a couple of laundromats with coffee shops nearby, making them great places to stop and refresh your gear.
