This location is ideal for paddlers, swimmers, hikers, artists, writers, and those interested in the additional comforts of a cabin rather than tent camping. Welcome to Cedar Creek Forest Camping! Voted second best campsite in Canada in 2021 and ranked number 2 in Ontario in 2022. I have 97 acres of very private camping. The forest is a bird watcher’s and nature lover’s paradise. I have developed miles of flat groomed trails and a 3-acre pond (plus several bush ponds). The sites are spread around the pond and are close but not right beside it. There is an abundant amount of wildlife to explore: birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects and mammals call this home. There is a small swimming hole on the island but otherwise the pond is full of aquatic life. The sites and trails are maintained all year long and the forest is quiet and beautiful. I have planted over 3000 trees with the help of the Severn Sound Environmental Association. The forest is registered as a managed woodlot with the province and habitat preservation/restoration is the priority goal. Please DO NOT bring firewood for your visit. I have large bags of cured firewood that was sustainable harvested from the forest available. Invasive insects and disease can be transferred from imported wood. Guests are welcome to quietly explore the forest trails but are asked to stay on the trail. Many birds and animals nest in the forest. My campsite is family-friendly (and pet-friendly), and 420 friendly too. Guests can easily drive up to and park at all campsites. My camp site is tolerant and respectful of all humans, animals and things. The Yurtle structures were built from Hemlock trees that were cut from this forest and processed into boards, then engineered into unique camping huts. Large windows capture the glory of the surrounding forest and sun sets, while wood stoves warm campers on those cold days/nights. We just came back from a wonderful family getaway at Lucie’s place in Tiny, Ontario — and it was perfect! We rented a travel trailer and parked it right on her beautiful property. The space was peaceful, quiet, and surrounded by nature, with tons of room and trails to explore. Our kids absolutely loved the private playground and especially feeding the chickens! Lucie and her family were very welcoming and made sure everything was just right for our stay. We’ll definitely be coming back — highly recommend this hidden gem for anyone looking to unwind and enjoy the outdoors!

We absolutely loved our stay at Derrick and Rachel's place! It was everything we dreamed of. The place is private, quiet and you are able to fully relax here. The Dome is beautiful, set high with gorgeous lake views. It is clean, extremely comfortable and has everything you need for an enjoyable stay. They have every amenity you require, and excellent seating areas outside (around the fire, and at the dock). The available kayak, canoe and paddleboards allows you to fully enjoy the property. The sauna/shower was such a nice touch and a great way to unwind at the end of the day. If you are looking for a hidden gem, slice or paradise, or the perfect getaway this is your place! Rachel was very responsive and helpful. We highly recommend.

Everything about this place was perfect for us! It was easy to find, private and clean. Our site was right on the water with a fire pit and a picnic table. The outhouse was impeccably cleaned and close to our site. We had access to kayaks and a canoe however, we didn't end up having time to use them. Hayley was extremely responsive and friendly. We definitely recommend staying here if you're in the area!

2 nights at Waterfield Ridge

It was a great spot to pitch a tent and unwind after a few days of fishing some Haliburton lakes. Easy to get to and Jennifer was a great and helpful host. The location is very scenic with the marsh and pond nearby and beautiful tall woods surrounding the site. We didn't get to meet Jennifer (we were too busy fishing all day) but she kept in contact and provided firewood as needed. The only downside I could think of was the barbecue on site didn't seem to have any propane, which was no big deal. We brought our own and actually didn't even know there would be one provided. The outhouse was a bit rustic, but for two guys living off the land it was a luxury to have a toilet at all. Lol. Would definitely go back!

Lisa's property was amazing! Lots of room, beautiful view of everything. Saw deer every day! Loved the outhouse, we are used to privies at Algonquin but the outhouse was way better - especially with the rain we had. She was great with communication and even checked to make sure we were ok after a big gusty windy rainy period of time. We will definitely be back! Thanks so much Lisa.

2 nights at Coutts Farm

This was one of our favourite Hipcamps. The lake was busier than we are used to but it was a long weekend so totally expected. We appreciated the private feel of the campsite being nestled in our little corner and we customized the site with tarp shelters and a hammock to lay about in the afternoons. The night sky was gorgeous with the moon and the sound of waves to keep us company. One should keep in mind that there are elevation changes at the site that could prove challenging for some. I was able to portage our canoe down to the water and back up to our vehicle but the pitch through the trees and down to the beach could prove tricky. Overall, we liked the secluded, civilized-rustic feel of the space: not Crown Land but sounds of the forest gave it a wild feel.

Loved the campsite! Haylee was super clear about everything leading up to the camping trip and never hesitated to respond to questions. The site was clean and well setup for us to have a great time with watercrafts available and a beautiful waterfront spot to launch from and hang out at. Would love to visit again.

Weekend Trip to Sparrow Lake Camp

Walking through the forest heading to the campsite, a beautiful view by the lake, loons calling, peaceful and quiet at night. The lake is weedy still went swimming, hubby enjoyed fishing. The lady who met us was so nice she showed me the way to our campsite and brought firewood, we missed the complimentary canoe hopefully next year we will have one, aside from that no complain. Definitely we be back.

Where to go

Algonquin Provincial Park

Bigger than the entire province of Prince Edward Island, this sprawling 7,500-acre park offers a range of natural attractions. If staying along Highway 60, which runs east-west through the southern end of Algonquin, you’ll find museums, drive-in campgrounds, and 14 interpretive trails. But the truly outdoorsy can venture into the vast backcountry, filled with thousands of lakes perfect for a weeklong trip portaging from one to the next.

Georgian Bay Islands National Park

Part of the world’s largest freshwater archipelago, Georgian Bay can feel a little like a voyage on the sea. White-sand beaches are lapped by aquamarine waters, and a boat trip will take you past as many as 63 islands. Hike through tall pines and the Canadian Shield to vistas stretching all the way to the horizon, then bed down for the night at a campsite or cabin.

Mikisew Provincial Park

Small but lovely, this park on Eagle Lake is an excellent place to paddle—rent a canoe, kayak or paddleboard, and explore the islands. After a dip at one of three sandy beaches, dry off with a round on the 18-hole disc golf course.

Massasauga Provincial Park

Often known as just "the Massasauga," this park offers opportunities to get away from it all. Boat around hundreds of windswept islands, anchor in a quiet cove, and camp and swim right from shore. When you’re ready for some action, hike one of three trails, the most challenging of which runs more than five kilometres between two historic places: Calhoun Lodge and the Baker pioneer homestead.

When to go

Summer definitely brings the best weather, with hot, humid days that warm the waters to a relatively comfortable temperature for swimming. But July and August are also very busy, with masses of people driving north from the Greater Toronto Area. April is rainy, but May and June can be quite pleasant, if a bit buggy. Evenings cool through September and October, when the autumn leaves pop with countless shades of gold, orange and red.

Know before you go

Highway 11, which connects Toronto with Muskoka, gets extremely busy in summer, especially on weekends—plan your drive up accordingly.
If you’re looking to buy camping gear, Huntsville, Gravenhurst, and Bracebridge are your best bets, but if you’re coming from the south, you’ll probably find better prices in Toronto or Barrie.
When visiting in spring, pack bug spray, as mosquitoes and blackflies can be irritating, especially around twilight.
Fishing requires a license, easily purchased at local hardware stores and retailers.
