We had a great time at the cabin. Gord and Penny we're very welcoming and helpful. The dogs loved dock diving and swimming in the lake. Unfortunately, we were hit with rain at nights along with a fire ban for the duration of our stay but we still loved our time here. It was great to unwind and disconnect.

This place is amazing! The two tents are spacious, beautifully set up, and incredibly well-equipped. Directions were clear, parking was easy, and the host was super helpful throughout.
The sleeping tent had a gorgeous bed with clean, comfy sheets, and the second tent had everything I needed — a kettle, cooktop, dining table, clean water, and more. I spent the day at a nearby beach and then relaxed by the firepit in the evening, surrounded by stunning birch trees.
I can’t recommend this place enough — a perfect mix of comfort and nature!

Penny is probably the best host I’ve ever encountered.
She was beyond welcoming. She invited my daughters and I to a tour of her private flower & vegetable gardens at her private residence just 5 minutes away from the camp.
She was more than accommodating and even was going to have her husband help us down to the camp with our stuff as the driveway at the top of the camp is too steep for my front wheel drive to get back up so we parked just off to the side where there was a clearing. We assured her we could handle our stuff down to the camp though.
All the firewood was supplied.
There is a nice pit with a swivel grill to cook right over the fire as there’s no hydro to the camp (that’s what makes it so special). We brought a bag of charcoal to make cooking in the pit easier as we’re veteran campers now lol.
I do suggest you bring your own life jackets if you plan to use the canoe that is also supplied.
If you’re bringing children & they aren’t picky about Rocky, mucky, full of beautiful lily pads (where you’ll get the joy of hearing all the frogs at night), with lots of little minnows/perch then they will likely be the only ones swimming right at the camp, otherwise there is a beautiful rock you can canoe over to around the corner to the right that you can jump off and it’s nice and clear water for the adults and teens!
Bring your flashlights, spare batteries & back up batteries as that’s all you’re living off.

Ben offered us an extra night at no charge and we’re glad we took him up on his kind offer as we saw the most colourful sunset of the trip on our last night! We’ll definitely come back.

3 nights at Summerhill Farm
This was a very lovely stay! Dawn and David are a very kind couple and accommodating hosts. They made sure we had everything we needed and more, and were very genuine. We had some wonderful chats with them and learned a lot about the area. The cabin had everything we needed to cook some great vacation meals and a beautiful porch to enjoy them on, and way very cozy for our off the grid get away trip. There was some usual wear and tear on the cabin, as it is older, but Dawn and David were very quick to respond and did their best to fix any problem we encountered. We explored the Fort and Island Museum nearby, biked down to the nearby boat dock; and kayaked in the nearby bay. It was a lovely little mosquito-less area, which was a nice change after our camping the previous days. We would love to return anytime.

Set on the shores of vast Lake Superior, this seasonal (May to October) park offers cliffs, beaches, swimming, boating, more than 200 camping sites, and an opportunity to hike out to an Indigenous sacred site to view the 400-year-old Agawa Rock Pictographs—35 red ochre images on the rocks.
St. Joseph Island
Connected to the mainland by a bridge, this 140,000-acre island between Lake Superior and Lake Huron has two sweet communities perfect for visitors with campgrounds, restaurants, beaches, marinas, and the Fort St. Joseph National Historic Site (where the War of 1812 began).
Wawa
Famous for its massive Goose, a 50-year-old roadside attraction, Wawa is a small town that hosts drag racing, fishing festivals, and summer music festivals. The town is surrounded by hiking, camping, and fishing.
This rugged park full of pristine lakes and rugged hills offers amazing hiking—especially along the 130-meter-high Helenbar Trail Lookout where you’ll find views, trout fishing, kayaking and canoeing, and a large number of rustic campsites (including pull-through sites for RVs). Cars are only allowed in the park from May to October.
When to go
While much in the city itself is open year-round (tourism isn’t a major industry in Sault Ste. Marie) and winter pursuits are popular, winter camping in northern Ontario is only really for hardcore campers, as temperatures can drop below -40°C. Plus, provincial parks and other campgrounds are mostly only open from May through October. Summers in the Soo can be very pleasant, and camping in the area is gorgeous long into fall.
Know before you go
- This isn’t an easy area to get around (or to and from) without a vehicle.
- While cell reception is fine in the city, it may be patchy or non-existent in more remote areas.
- Plenty of outdoor outfitters exist in the city where you can pick up any supplies you need.
- The Sault Ste. Marie border crossing is right in the city. To hop across to the US, you’ll need your passport.
