We had a great time at The Ridge Retreat! The campsite is beautiful, well-maintained, and the views are amazing. The fire pits were perfect, and we really appreciated how easy it was to set up camp near the road at the top of the hill. That spot is very convenient for loading and unloading gear, though being close to the road does mean you’ll occasionally hear passing cars and nearby dogs. Next time, we’d probably choose a spot closer to the water for more privacy and atmosphere.
The trail leading down to the water and lower campsites is long with steep inclines, so be prepared for a bit of a trek. We brought a wagon, which made transporting our things manageable—without it, carrying everything would’ve been tough. The dock and water setup are absolutely gorgeous. We spent most of our days down there soaking in the views, and our dog had the best time playing by the water. We didn’t swim ourselves, and while we didn’t catch any fish, just being by the water was incredibly relaxing.
The host was wonderful—very friendly, accommodating of our late arrival, and made sure we had plenty of firewood. Overall, we’d definitely recommend The Ridge Retreat to anyone looking for a scenic, peaceful camping experience with a balance of convenience and adventure.

The pictures truly don’t do this spot justice! It’s very beautiful and spacious. My mother even took a photo of the outhouse because she couldn’t believe how clean and nice it was 😂. Very private and quiet space. View of the water was definitely a hike but absolutely worth it. An excellent time was had by all! Already planning to visit again! ☺️

It was an amazing spot to stay, the outhouse was super clean, it was very quiet and peaceful!
It is definitely a hike to get to the water from where we decided to put our tent up so we will definitely remember to bring the wagon next time, to make bringing things up/down a bit easier.
We brought our dogs and they LOOVED It - soo many squirrels to chase and they loved jumping off the dock
Overall super nice spot!

The water was fabulous for swimming and paddling around. The site was very private and peaceful. We saw a beaver, some deer, frogs, snakes and a variety of birds. Despite the fire ban, we really enjoyed a (mostly) bug-free stay. Sandra was a very accommodating and gracious host.

Lovely lake property with a private dock. Multi-level options to pitch your tent (3 areas) with clean outhouses on 2 of those levels. Be prepared for a steep rugged climb up and down to the lake! Host was responsive and friendly!

Weekend Trip to Floating Bunkie
This is a beautiful spot! The owners are very lovely and communicative. Can’t really beat it for the price! The bunkie on the water is so nice. The bed is really comfy as well. Definitely bring lots of bug spray!! Also, if you’re not great with stairs then it’s not the best option, but otherwise it’s a great built in workout! The fishing was great there as well right off the dock. Sunsets are beautiful! And you see fireflies at night, which was a beautiful surprise! Thank you for the hospitality!

Great family swim spot, we lucked out with great weather, Sandi was very accomodating and helpful. Absolutely would come back, MASSIVE amount of property to explore, great fishing, secluded property, very private, an absolute gem. Its a 3in1 camp spot- theres an RV site, a deep woods site, or a smaller-ish beach campsite however we managed to configure 2 tents and 4 people down there by the water pretty comfortably. The outhouses are situated at the RV and deep woods site, theyre clean, and a comfortable size. Overall a really great experience from start to finish, thanks again Sandi!

The site was absolutely beautiful, we would 100% love to go back, the host was super nice and very responsive compared to some other hosts we’ve booked with. The site was super secluded and we had tons of space for tents and all our cooking supplies with 5 people. The only minor downside of the site was how spread out everything was and the small hike up a fairly steep hill to get from the main site down to the water however there was a slightly longer less steep trail for when we were all too hot and tired to “thug it out” however the water served as perfect reward at the bottom to cool ourselves off. Would definitely recommend bringing a fishing rod, there were dozens of sunfish coming up to us in the water and we saw larger fish jumping in the water. Also saw a beaver jumping, overall super cool stay!!

We had such a great time at Sandra’s place — especially our puppy, Ducky! She absolutely loved the water, and we loved relaxing on the dock. It’s the perfect spot to swim together and a great little area to hang out as a group.
The hike down to the water is definitely steep, so be prepared for a bit of a workout — lots of up and down! But if you’re up for a little adventure, it’s totally worth it. The spot is completely secluded, so if you’re looking for privacy and peaceful surroundings, this place is perfect. And town is very close considering how deep into the forest you are .

It's very calme, no noise.
You are near of a k lake to swim and a nice deck for the sunshine.
It's a calme lake, we are alone on the for the time we stay there. Paddleboard was so cool.

What a great hidden gem! We stayed here for two nights and it was perfect! The lake front access is great- you can jump right in and there’s lots of fish to catch with a gorgeous view. There was a bit of a walk down to the water but it’s really worth it for the private lake front. Bathrooms were very clean and there is lots of options where to put your tents!! We launched our boat accords the lake on Sandra and Terrys property and terry was extremely welcoming and helpful getting our boat down there and launched. He even gave my partner some helpful tips for the boat since he has not used this boat yet. Sandra was amazing with answering questions and the directions to arrive were very straight forward. Overall would go back again and high highly recommend if you want a private site and a gorgeous lake for swimming and fishing! Thanks Sandra and Terry!!

The best mountainous camping near Kingston guide
Where to go
North of Kingston is one of Ontario’s top spots for backcountry camping. Frontenac is open year-round and caters to both paddlers and backpackers with 12 small clusters of campsites (48 interior campsites in total) that limit the impact on nature while providing basic facilities. Each campsite has a tent pad, firepit, picnic table, privy, and food locker.
“The County” is not quite an island, but it does feel like an escape from the mainland filled with antique shops, wineries, and sandy shores. Campers pack the 500 car camping sites at Sandbanks Provincial Park all summer, and day visitors join them on the popular beachfront. Rent a canoe, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard to enjoy the water even more.
Thousand Islands
The Thousand Islands in the St. Lawrence River create a complex archipelago. Thousand Islands National Park comprises 19 of these islands, and primitive camping is available on many of them. Navigation can be difficult due to dangerous shoals, so purchase a good set of charts unless you are in a canoe or kayak. Several private campgrounds operate near the Thousand Islands Parkway on the river’s north shore.
When to go
If you’re planning to enjoy the water, July and August are the warmest times to take a dip but also the hardest times to book a campsite. Choose a spring or fall trip for a more relaxing experience, with fewer crowds. Campsites in Thousand Islands National Park are available from late May to mid-October.
Know before you go
- As a university town, Kingston is relatively quiet from June to August, while the students are away for the summer.
- Cycling is a great way to see Kingston’s waterfront, and there are also cycling routes throughout the city.
- Prince Edward County is home to dozens of craft winemakers, cideries, and breweries. Most offer tastings and onsite shops.
- The three large beaches at Sandbanks Provincial Park are natural dunes and considered some of the best sandy beaches in Canada.
