The best camping in Lake Meredith National Recreation Area, TX guide

Overview

About

Extensive recreation opportunities await you at this national park built around its titular lake. Sanford Dam creates the 10,000-acre artificial reservoir, where you can enjoy boating year-round.

Rent a craft onsite or bring your own; there are multiple boat launches for public use. Plentiful bass, catfish, crappie, and trout make Lake Meredith a popular fishing spot.

Once you're done on the water, see the region from the ground with a hiking expedition. The Harbor Bay Trail is the best if you're looking for sightseeing.

Steep terrain can make it a bit challenging for beginners, though. If you'd prefer a more relaxed stroll, try the Muillinaw Trail. This one's fairly flat and gives you a good view of the Canadian River.

Looking for a romantic evening under the stars with your travel partner? Lake Meredith features some beautiful overlooks perfect for those nights. The Fritch Fortress Campground and Sanford-Yake Campground provides the best lake views.

Notable campgrounds

  • Sunrise Campground: Wake to the glow of dawn over the water at this picturesque site.
  • Cedar Canyon: Nestled amid steep cliffs, Cedar Canyon is a camper's retreat.
  • Fritch Fortress: A favorite for its stunning lake views and easy water access.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Book early to secure your spot, as campgrounds fill up quickly during peak seasons.
  • Consider visiting during the weekdays for better availability.
  • Check for cancellations regularly, as plans change and spots may open up.
  • Explore nearby camping options for alternative sites when the park is full.

When to go

The ideal time to visit Lake Meredith is during the spring and fall when temperatures are moderate and the park's natural beauty is at its peak. Summer brings heat and larger crowds, while winter can be harsh with cold winds and limited services.

Know before you go

  • Always wear your Personal Flotation Device (PFD) while boating on the lake.
  • Be aware of the park's wildlife; keep a safe distance and do not feed the animals.
  • Check the park's website for alerts on current conditions and closures before your visit.
  • Accessibility varies across the park; inquire ahead for specific needs.
  • Remember to Clean, Drain, & Dry your boat to prevent the spread of invasive species.
