Macfarlane is a working Merino sheep and beef cattle operation. It is 24,000 acres (9612 hectares). It predominantly open Mitchell grass downs country with a small acreage of Gidgee scrub. We are on the watershed of the lake eyre catchment system with the murray darling on the other side. We have a wide variety of bird life and native animals. Our seasons vary, sometimes it is drought stricken and others lush. Do not assume by looking at lovely green grass photos that it always look like this. We are new to this game so please be patient as we find our way. We offer accommodation at the shearers quarters and camping. Other than at shearing time our quarters lie idle. The quarters are basic with 8 bedrooms. Each room has 2 beds with a mattress, linen is not provided. There is basic showering and toileting facilities. There is a washing machine. The kitchen has fridges and freezers. There is an oven and a cooktop. There is very limited cooking equipment.  It is a 500 metre walk to the house dam. It has commanding views of the surrounding countryside. You can camp or park your campervan/RV at the dam. Feel free to pitch your tent here and simply park your camping vehicle and unwind. This site is dependant on seasonal conditions as to whether or not the dam is full or empty. There are toilets, showers and cooking facilities available at our shearers quarters 500 metres away.

What a beautiful spot amongst the river gums. Louise and her partner were very welcoming and helpful. I had a wonderful time painting, creating and wandering with my dog. The dams were low but this was of little consequence with no mozzies to speak of.

Easy to find , peaceful . The shearer’s quarters were clean and had everything I needed. It was perfect for me as a single camper. Beautiful sunset and sunrise. Shower is hot . Andrew’s advice on best roads to get north was spot on and much appreciated.

We enjoyed our stay but the van area we were taken to was completely overgrown with knee high clumps of grass which made it difficult to walk around especially at night. It was also completely covered with prickles. We are used to station stays + don't expect a lawn but if a section had just been slashed a bit it would have made a big difference. Lovely scenery + potential to be an excellent site.

The hosts are just wonderful and iris the most peaceful and tranquil of settings. So much wildlife to enjoy, along with the resident stock (horses, sheep, donkeys, cattle etc). Definitely recommend coming when it's cooler and there's been some rainfall but totally idyllic as a country retreat on a working property.

Louise’s place was a highlight of our trip through Queensland. We camped next to the shearing quarters and were blown away by the panoramic view. The night sky was expansive and clear. Louise was very generous with her time, answering our questions about the station. We had a late itinerary change and Louise was very understanding and quick with communications. Thank you for an unforgettable experience.

I loved my stay at the Shearer's quarters. The quarter are nothing flash, but are clean, comfortable and surrounded by magnificent views. The shower was hot and the kitchen functional. It was exactly the beautiful landscape and space I needed to take a break for a couple of nights on my journey. My hosts were absolutely lovely, and left me to myself, which is just what I wanted. I would love to go back.

Unfortunately we were extremely disappointed because the site we were on was covered in burs and prickles which made it impossible for my semi fluffy dog to walk. It took forever to remove all the burs and prickles from her fur too. The soles of our shoes were hard to clean as the prickles were stuck in them. It really was a shame because the experience would have been great otherwise.

The first thing was the information for where it was didn’t really coordinate with the signage. Quite confusing. Unfortunately the area we were given for our caravan parking was covered in burrs and dry weed which got into our footwear etc. Most uncomfortable. The positive was that it was remote and when the cattle and sheep came in the morning to the dam it was beautiful to watch.

Outback highlight!
Site 1 - Macfarlane Shearers Quarters
We booked the shearers quarters and had the place to ourselves. What an amazing experience staying on this huge station away from civilisation. So peaceful. Wonderful hosts that make you feel welcome. They live away from the shearers quarters so it was totally private. A highlight of our outback trip. We loved the donkeys!

A good overnight stay NW of Tambo between the house dam and overflow. Would have been great birdwatching but was very windy during my stay. Nice shady trees under which to stop.

What a beautiful place - and what beautiful people. Me, my three boys, and our van - one night. Paradise. Watched the sunset, enjoyed the solitude. Hard to go back into a van park after having that sort of space. Highly recommend.

Stayed here for 2 nights to get some outback photo's, Great place, the host was very friendly, took me round the property and pointed out some places for photographing the wildlife. Will stay here again next time I'm this way.

Four nights of solitude camped at the house dam. The birds, kangaroos, horses and cattle were my visitors in this tranquil setting. The internet and mobile phone were excellent as there is tower nearby. Mine host Andrew is a colourful character and he is passionate about his property. The property tour was excellent. I came away with a different understanding of the life of the people on the land Look forward to staying again when passing through. My 6 tonne motorhome is not 4 wd and it had no trouble with the 8 kms of dirt road. In the wet it would be a different story John

We really enjoyed our stay with all the beautiful birds in the morning to wake up with. we set up a swag and a hammock beside the campfire was a lovely 2 days Hosts are both very welcoming recommend

If you like solitude, river gums and great hosts book a trip Able to walk through shearing shed, shearer’s quarters, paddocks and chat in depth with host about the station and history. Around the dams are lots of wildlife as well as donkeys, horses, llamas and of course sheep and cattle. As Andrew the host says “the cradle of civilisation”

Excellent dam side camping with great views and plenty of firewood. Our hosts Louise, Isabel and Andrew another staffJimmy and Lias were very welcoming and happy to show us around their property of which they are very proud - as they should be! Very accessible for our 16ft van and vehicle - a 4WD. Its only 30K to Tambo with plenty to see there - the Chicken Races at the pub raising money for the RFDS is a must see.

We decided to stay by the Woolshed and were there 3 days. Peaceful, relaxing and you could see for miles. Andrew was very informative and drove us around a bit. Loved his sense of humour. We were lucky they were about to shear 5000sheep. Watched Louise and 3 daughters sorting the first batch of sheep. On shearing day Louise was really informative and answered many question. Would definitely stay again if we come this way

This is an excellent spot if you like seclusion. A nice relaxing place with plenty of firewood. It was freezing 😁

Louise and Andrew were extremely welcoming. If only we could have stayed longer. Their farm is full of cows horses alpacas sheep dogs and that’s just what we saw.

Arrived late and left the next day and was great for a quick stopover. Didn't get to see available facilities. Amazing view of the stars at night.
