Unwind in the seclusion of this private and safe bush camping site on the banks of the Wambuul-Macquarie River in the remote Killongbutta valley located half-way between Bathurst and Orange.
It’s a place where time stands still. Enabling you to reconnect with nature as you slow down and embrace the sounds of the river, wildlife and sheoaks when they ‘whisper secrets to the wind’.
Many stories and dreamings have come from this place which guarantees to inspire your imagination as an artist, writer, poet or musician.
You have access to 100 acres of bushland or enjoy a walk along Killongbutta Road which winds its way through spectacular Wiradjuri country where ancient stone quarries, corroboree sites and a warrior’s grave have been found.
Platypus, water dragons and river rats all live in the river. Be prepared to share the site with wombats who have burrowed their homes into the banks.
Road access to site is suitable for 2WD in dry weather. It is a short, steep drop with two tight corners not suitable for large caravans and RVs.
The site has a newly constructed long drop toilet, pets are allowed and bring your own firewood to ensure you have enough as it's becoming scarce around the site. Please take all rubbish with you.
Please note: Kids under 12 are free to support young families wanting to experience the bush. Please still add them to the booking as they will not be charged.
What is not allowed: shooters and trappers, illegal fishing, motor bikes, quad bikes and other noisy machines!
Killongbutta Road runs off Freemantle Road and is 36 kms from Bathurst. It is 40 kilometres from Orange through Gowan Road that joins Lower Lewis Ponds Road.
For your information, On the Stone is a podcast and publishing studio that produces a quarterly magazine for the Freemantle Road community. We have local history to share and can always provide information about our services.
We look forward to providing exclusive access to our river site for campers who will appreciate and respect this place which is our home.
Thank you to all the campers who have stayed at our retreat. You have all been wonderful, caring for our property and writing great reviews. The drop loo is taking on its own character with your messages and artworks.Exclusive access to our river frontage gives you the privacy and safety you look for when camping in the bush. You will lock the gate behind you to have full access to this campsite established for those who want to be inspired through reconnecting with nature. Enjoy the long leisurely walks on Killongbutta Road or on our property where you can climb the hill to see the magnificent views. Please note the access road to site becomes slippery during wet weather conditions making it unsuitable for pulling camper trailers and difficult for 2 wheel drive vehicles.
FIRE SEASON NOTICE Please note fire restrictions apply during the summer fire season. No fires can be lit without a permit and gas stoves, bbqs etc cannot be used during a total fire ban. Go to www.rfs.nsw.gov.au to familiarise yourself with the rulings and penalties.

What a truly spectacular place to just stop and sit still. Nice big grassy area to set up camp, drop toilet with a 5 star view, the sound of the birds, the gentle river rapids, everything was just magic.
Directions were simple and easy to follow and Marje is a warm and wonderful host.
Absolutely perfect.
An amazing spot that is well worth the stay and yes the toilet is one to see 🤣 I admit the drive down to the site was a little confronting for me but it wasn’t as bad as it looked 😊
We camped there with 6 adults and 6 kids under 12. It was perfect. The kids drifted down the river on lilos and played on the sandy beach. The site was clean and tidy and the loo was great. Thanks for having us!
Private and secluded spot away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. A beautiful site where you can see and hear the wildlife. The kids had an absolute ball and the drop toilet has to be seen to be believed.
Sensor lights upon approach made night time trips to the loo almost too civilised.
Private, flat, grassy, platypus, nice long drop, steep drive in, platypus, lots of water in creek, platypus, swing, established fire place, platypus, roos, goats, great memories.
Excellent camping spot! Marge was clear and consistent with her communication which made finding her oasis easy. Nothing beats being alone by the river and having a loo with a view! Thanks, Marje for sharing your little slice of paradise with us.
A great little spot in one of my favourite parts of NSW. If you’re just looking for a secluded space to decompress, camp, cook and chat you’ll love it. Has everything you need and nothing you don’t. We’ll be back!
Marje thinks of everything, her campsite is well looked after and has the nicest cleanest drop toilet in NSW! The location couldn’t be better it was a 10/10 camp, couldn’t fault a thing.
Beautiful and well kept grassy camping spot. Lots of flat areas to set up camp next to the river, and the toilet on site is very clean. My kids are already asking to go back.
My son and I were blown away upon arrival! We arrived as the sunlight was fading yet we saw camp chairs all set up nicely around the fire pit. The scenery.. a beautiful slice of heaven...way above what I had expected..the sound of the flowing river...the trees...the relaxing walks along the river in both directions.. tranquil and enchanting. This was my idea of an escape, privacy in a cute pocket of open space. We were never bored. A great place to bond and laugh. Definitely returning. Once out the locked gate we had a rewarding chat with Marj...lovely lovely lady!!!! Thankyou!!!!! Kat n Cas
What a breathtakingly gorgeous place! Every direction you look it’s like looking at a painting. Marje has gone above and beyond to provide campers with a safe and comfortable space to connect with Australian nature, and was an incredibly kind and thoughtful host for me.
Amazing Off Grid Camping.
Just you and nature, Goats, Roos, Wallabies, & the Elusive platypus on 2 separate day's.
Planned on exploring the local area, but once settled we wanted not to move ever again, we wanted to stay another week.
We stayed Mon-Fri, but here I think every day is the same... Perfect...
We had an incredible stay at River Retreat! From the moment we arrived, it felt like our own private slice of nature. The site is perfectly secluded—ideal for first-time campers looking for a relaxed, no-stress setup.
Our kids had an absolute blast playing by the river and on the swing set (which was a huge hit!). The included seating and tables around the campfire were a thoughtful touch that made evenings by the fire so much easier and more enjoyable.
The views down the river are absolutely stunning, especially at sunrise and sunset. It’s the kind of place where you can truly unwind.
If we had to suggest anything, it would be having a stockpile of firewood on-site (we made a mid-trip dash to Bunnings!), and perhaps some composting pellets for the drop toilet. But honestly, those were minor things in an otherwise perfect weekend.
We’re already planning our return in summer—can’t wait! Thanks Marje for sharing this little piece of paradise.
What a wonderful spot! The privacy was exactly what we were after and listening to the river was so relaxing. The outhouse was fantastic and spotless! Will return!
We had a fabulous time, perfect weather perfect location, having no phone service was great for everyone, plenty to explore we had plans to visit Bathurst and Orange but once we settled in to our camp we didn’t want to leave, will be back for sure
Thanks again
Beautiful spot, well maintained and easy to find with very good directions.
I called Marje for a weather report before leaving home and she was very lovely to talk to.
There's no reception so it feels like you're really off the grid. Toilet is well maintained and the chairs around the campsite were a nice bonus.
We did notice a bit of kangaroo poop around the area, but it didn't have any smell and it didn't detract from the experience at all. We actually got a few kangaroos that visited us during the stay too!
Exploring Marje's land was really nice and we loved the freedom it gave our dogs as well.
