Barkala Farmstay is a self-sustaining farm located off the grid, supplying our own water and solar electricity. The Farm is a grazing property situated on 13,000 acres surrounded by the tranquil Pilliga Forest. Only access is a 10km dirt road of the Newell Highway, north of Coonabarabran (follow directions below). As well as farm animals, the farm hosts a thriving community of birds and well- designed bush tracks where you can discover local wildlife, plants, Aboriginal artifacts, great lookouts, sandstone cliffs and caves all in the midst of the Pilliga Forrest. Barkala Farmstay is also home to Pilliga Pottery and the Blue Wren Bush Cafe (closed Wednesdays), offering pottery demonstrations and workshops, traditional European inspired fresh foods with ingredients from our organic green house and homemade Gelato. The property offers two camp sites, Goanna and Kellies Campground, which are freely available to anyone who books a camping stay with us. There are no allocated camping spots in either campground, thus it is first come, first serve. We offer large camping spots with no campground boundaries hence there is space for vehicles of any size. Both camping sites offer compost toilets and showers (although we encourage short showers due to our off-grid, self-sustaining farm). You are welcome to stop by the reception upon check-in to hear more about our campgrounds and we can help you find the perfect camp spot and tell you more about what we have to offer. Campers are welcome to enjoy feeding of our farm animals, our saltwater pool and campfires. Firewood can be collected on the property by yourself, or you can visit the reception to buy firewood. The family and I did tent camping at Kellie's campground. The paddock was large, so you could pick the spot you wanted. Sites were not marked, but it general, it was flat, not rocky, had fire pits and plenty of shade and parking. The camp block had two composting toilets, two hot showers and two kitchen sinks for washing up. The cafe was a five minute walk from the campground, which was a godsend in the morning. Plenty of things to do for the whole family - animal feeding, pottery classes, scavenger hunt, swimming pool, lots and lots of bush walking trails. We will be coming back :-)

What a beautiful and unique place Maria and her family have created. We camped at Kelly's campground and enjoyed the pool, nearby hikes and having space to just relax. Genuinely in awe of the hard work and creativity that has gone into building this gem of the Piliga. Thank you so much for sharing this special place with us.

I loved tent camping here - the facilities were really good, and I could drive my 2WD right to the camp site. There was plenty of space and privacy, and it was a bonus to have the cafe available for dinner (I used it one of the two nights). There was also lots to do - the pottery, and the bushwalking, and the market on Saturday morning in Coota, and the sky observation in the evening - brilliant weekend!

It was my first camping in Australia, and it will surely be one of my most memorable. Every corner of Piliga Pottery is incredibly beautiful, peaceful, and full of character. Maria, her family, and the staff made me feel so welcome — their kindness and warmth truly made this place feel like home. It was a special experience I will always cherish. I def recommend this place and would love to return one day.

I had a great time camping at Piliga Pottery! There's plenty to do with many bush walks & pottery workshops. Kellie's campground has a dog run which was great for burning off my dog's extra energy. Everyone involved in the property was lovely!

A wonderful, unique camping experience. Campsites are pleasant and amenities good. The best part is the opportunity to participate in a pottery or clay class, and enjoy a pizza in the on-site cafe! A really fun destination camp and close to The Sculptures in the Scrub for a fantastic bushwalk.

I was contacted by the host prior to arrival to ensure directions and any queries that I had, which I found very good. Directions were precise and easy to follow. With a 8M Motorhome I found the dirt road easily navigable when taken with care. There are two options of campgrounds. I opted to stay in Kellies Campground. The campground was clean and tidy and the showers and toilets also were clean and tidy. Went for a 3hr walk up in the bush, all tracks being better signposted than the council parks I go in. Overall, this campground was a great suprise to find. The host that I dealt with (Bella), was very friendly and helpful and Kellies campground is highly recommended, wether by yourself or with family.

This is the kind of place you'll want to stay for a few days. Plenty to do: pottery lessons, bushwalks, not to mention the stunning National Parks nearby. Quiet, peaceful atmosphere with brilliant facilities and setup. Can't rate highly enough.

Friendly host. Kellies Campgound is a large flat shady area, easy to access, quiet and peaceful. The food at the Pillaga Pottery cafe was fresh and superb, the coffee was great also.

The camp area is large and pretty. There is a small creek running behind the camp area. The toilet block is clean and tidy, the toilets are well maintained pit toilets and the showers have hot water. There are also sinks for washing dishes which is handy. It's a 5 minute walk from the pottery barn and cafe. We had a great stay.

Barkala farm stay is our favourite camping spot near Coonabarabran. Maria is always welcoming and helpful and we love the pottery shop. The cafe is amazing and serves the best fire baked pizzas - absolutely delicious!

Such a divine place. We loved every minute of our stay here and were sad to leave. Dirt road was easy to drive on. I have a Mazda CX30 and drove that road six times for day trips without any issues. Make sure to take a pottery class! The food and coffee at the cafe were exceptional. Can’t wait to come back.

The campground was very easy to find and the amenities were good, I was really happy to have a hot shower after a long day of winter hiking. The stars were lovely and there were a lot of cute birds! I would go here again.

This was one of the coolest places you can camp. So many bushwalks, wood fired pizza, pottery classes . What an awesome place. I wish I wasn’t just stopping through. I think I’ll be back !

We only stayed one night, so difficult to give a thorough assessment. There was also only two other vans at the site, plenty of room to choose a spot. Not sure how this would go if it was busy as the sites are not designated and there did not appear to be anyone around to manage things. There are some large trees that looked a bit unstable so check where you set up. The campground itself has an abundance of birdlife. The thing that would put us off staying again is the road in, it is 10km of unsealed with some pretty bad corrugations requiring the airing down on tyres.

Quiet campsite, best night sleep I’ve had for a long time. Delicious wood fired pizza for dinner and for breakfast one of the best omelettes by far. And I couldn't go past buying some wonderfully crafted pottery. Wish I had the time to stay a couple of nights as there are heaps of bush walks and pottery classes. Will hopefully be back.

We stayed for one night and really enjoyed the experience. We took part in a pottery lesson, which was a fun and relaxing activity. The staff at the café were friendly, and we loved that they served coffee in handmade cups crafted in their own pottery studio. There were plenty of beautiful ceramic items available for purchase, adding a nice touch to the visit. The campsite offers different areas to stay in, so it’s worth double-checking which one you’re booked into before arriving. The surrounding nature was beautiful, and we spotted lots of wild goats along the dirt roads—definitely a unique sight! Despite driving a low city car, we had no issues reaching the site. The toilet next to the café was impressively clean, and overall, the place felt well maintained. We think it’s worth staying for at least a couple of nights to fully enjoy the atmosphere. All in all, it was a great experience that we’d happily recommend.
