We've got you covered with the top trails, trips, hiking, backpacking, camping and more around Deming. The city is within the Gadsden Purchase of 1853, which was acquired from Mexico specifically to provide a southern route for a railroad to connect the United States with California. Deming was founded in 1881 and incorporated in 1902, and is named after Mary Ann Deming Crocker, wife of Charles Crocker, one of the Big Four of the California railroad industry. Deming is located within the Upper Chihuahuan Desert climate zone. The climate is dry, hot, and breezy. Summer temperatures often exceed 100 °F (38 °C), but the altitude (4,300 feet (1,300 m)) and dry air sometimes make summer days more comfortable than one would expect given the high temperature. The best camping near Pancho Villa State Park guide

Overview

About

Ok, Pancho Villa kind of sounds like a really awesome mexican restaurant, but we promise what you’ll get at Pancho Villa State Park is a load of fun and with a ton of history! Besides the serene desert setting, there’s a museum in the park where you can learn about the Pancho Villa Raid and the history of Camp Furlong. Though Camp Furlong doesn’t exist anymore, there IS plenty of camping for tent-lovers and RVers in the cushy campgrounds, so you can chill under the desert sky and around the campfire. If you stay a few days and have a passport, Pancho Villa is so close to the Mexican border you can just head down there and find yourself that authentic, tasty meal, too!

Notable campgrounds

  • Developed Campsites: Equipped with electric hookups and water, these sites are perfect for RVs and tents alike.
  • Primitive Camping: For a more rugged experience, 'boondocking' sites offer a chance to connect with nature.
  • First Come, First Serve (South Loop): Ideal for spontaneous travelers, offering both primitive and electrical sites.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Book early to secure a spot at the Developed Campsites, especially during peak seasons.
  • For a spontaneous trip, try the South Loop's first come, first serve sites.
  • Check the park's website for cancellation policies to snag last-minute openings.
  • Explore nearby camping options for additional opportunities in the surrounding BLM land.

When to go

The best time to visit Pancho Villa State Park is from October to May, when the Exhibit Hall is open daily and the weather is mild. Summer months can be extremely hot, making outdoor activities less comfortable. Plan your visit around Camp Furlong Day in March for a historical reenactment.

Know before you go

  • Check the park's website for any alerts on closures or restrictions before your visit.
  • Remember to bring plenty of water and sun protection for the desert climate.
  • Day-use passes are required and can be purchased online or at the park.
  • RV dump stations and comfort stations with showers and flush toilets are available.
  • For a unique experience, attend the special events like Pancho's Car Show in October.
