Tunnel Bay Creek, Cape Raoul

17. Tunnel Bay Creek, Cape Raoul

Stormlea, TAS · 1 site
I offer private bush camping next to a small lake on a 103-acre rainforest property - only one group allowed at any time, so this is an exclusive camping and bushwalking experience, which also includes private walking-track access into the Tasman National Park (particularly to Tunnel Bay and the Shipstern Bluff). Toilet in the owner's home, with fresh drinking water provided. Stays are limited to a single group - with a maximum of four people per group - so the place is yours to explore on your own. The driveway is not suitable for large campervan access. 2wd is ok, but please take care. Possibility to discuss extended stay (short-term only) with some gardening as swap for payment. Important: This is not a party property - it is a private residence, in a uniquely quiet and secluded place on the edge of high-value National Park. Playing loud music or behaving in a drunken, antisocial, or otherwise disrespectful manner will result in the owner calling the police. Please keep those things in mind before making a booking to avoid later drama for yourself! Given the serious fire risk and the potentially devastating consequences to the area, campfires are highly restricted, and allowed only in suitably safe weather, as determined by the owner. My place provides an opportunity to enjoy this very special part of the world in peace. No gigantic carpark. No tourists. No noise. The nearest neighbour is 1km away. There is also no light pollution, and with grand views to the southern ocean, this is as good a place as any to see an Aurora! I see them routinely (check the Aurora alert website for updates). You have your own private walking track into the National Park, along with a large natural area to explore. The property is mainly undisturbed temperate rainforest and includes creeks, springs, a 35-metre waterfall (after good rain), amazing plant and animal diversity, and various places to explore at your leisure. You may be visited by one of the resident Tasmanian Devils, and you'll definitely be surrounded by marsupials and likely smothered with hugs from my doodle dog, Roo.

The Barn @ Eden Farmstay

15. The Barn @ Eden Farmstay

Cygnet, TAS · 1 site
This memorable place is anything but ordinary. The Barn, c1935, at Eden Farm on the outskirts of Cygnet has been renovated to create a fantastic place from which to explore the Huon Valley and beyond. Spacious 4 bedrooms 2 bathrooms lets you bring the whole family along to create long lasting memories of time spend together. Roaming through the orchard, roasting marshmallows, feeding the Highland cattle, goats, sheep and alpacas. Only 45 minutes away from Hobart. The Barn from early 1900 has been restored to create a touch of luxury to your rural escape. The Barn is spacious with cathedral ceiling in main living space and exposed beams in the bedrooms. It's an inviting colonial eclectic space that makes you feel right at home. (the attic is used for storage and the stairs are blocked at the bottom for child safety)

East Coast Tasmania camping guide

Where to go

North-East Tasmania

Start your East Coast road trip in the north, where spectacular views and wildlife sightings await at the Bay of Fires—there are even free camping spots to be found. To the north, the striking coastline of Mount William National Park is ablaze with wildflowers through spring and summer, and it’s the ideal time for snorkelling and scuba diving. Further south, St Helens and the Surf Coast is the place to surf, hike, and fish along the coast.

Freycinet

Three of the East Coast’s national parks are found along the southern stretch of coast, starting with the hugely popular Freycinet National Park. Hiking, sea kayaking, and snorkelling are fun ways to explore Wineglass Bay and the surrounding coastline, and the beach camping is second to none. Nearby, there’s forest hiking and camping at Douglas Apsley National Park and car-free camping near the painted cliffs of Maria Island National Park.

Tasman Peninsula

Dangling off Tasmania’s southeast corner, the Tasman Peninsula is dominated by towering sea cliffs. Explore the coastal hikes, hidden sea caves, and windswept beaches of the Tasman National Park, uncover Tasmania’s convict history at the Port Arthur Historic Site, or tackle some of the island’s most epic surf. You’ll find great camping in and around the national park or, for a more local experience, the peninsula is also peppered with Hipcamps.
