Farm stays near Wagga Wagga guide

Where to go

Along the Murrumbidgee River

The Murrumbidgee River flows through the heart of the Riverina, dotted with caravan parks and riverfront campsites. Stop to swim and sunbathe at one of the riverside beaches, enjoy fishing along the shore, or set sail on a boat cruise to explore further afield. Kayaking, water-skiing, and other water sports are possible in the summer months.

Griffith and Around

Sloping green hills and vineyards surround the country town of Griffith, northwest of Wagga Wagga. Hop between wineries for tastings, camp along the shores of Lake Wyangan, or enjoy bird-watching around the wetlands of Darlington Point. Nearby, the riverside towns of Leeton and Narrandera are also popular spots for campers.

Snowy Valleys

The eastern slopes of the Riverina lie in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains, where cool-climate vineyards and glittering lakes dot the landscapes. Tumut and Tumbarumba are the liveliest towns, from where hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails lead the way through the valleys. Kosciuszko National Park is within easy reach, and its snow-capped peaks are home to some of Australia’s most famous ski resorts.

When to go

Wagga Wagga has four distinct seasons, and the landscapes are constantly changing. Come in summer (December through February) to swim along the river or pick fresh strawberries at a fruit farm, in spring or autumn to hike and cycle through the valleys, or in winter, on route to the nearby ski resorts. Perhaps time your visit for seasonal events such as Mardi Gras in March or the craft beer festival in October, both of which draw large crowds.

Know before you go

  • Wagga Wagga and the Riverina have a good public transport service, but having your own transport is useful for exploring the vineyards and surrounding towns.
  • Wagga Wagga has a large selection of shops where you can pick up camping gear and stock up on supplies.
  • Fire bans are common in New South Wales during summer and dry periods, so check local recommendations.
