Giant City...State Park. Isn’t that an oxymoron? Tucked away in the Shawnee National Forest, Giant City will give you plenty distance from the real city. The park actually gets its name from the massive, 12,000-year-old sandstone bluffs that tower over “city streets” (i.e. scenic hiking trails). Eons of geological faulting and folding have sculpted the seemingly extraterrestrial landscape. And the rocks’ lush garments of fern, moss, flowering mints and wildflowers are seriously straight out of Fern Gully.
Giant City offers a cornucopia of activities, whatever your fancy. Miles of hiking trails, including some suitable for overnight ventures, wind through the park. Campsites are available as well as shelters and grills for picnicking. If you have one, you can BYOH (Bring Your Own Horse) or take a guided trail ride. Scattered ponds and Little Grassy Lake offer A+ fishing and boating. And for those rock junkies, climbing is permitted at two locations in the park. So get ready to give your city a run for it’s money.
