“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.”-J.R.R. Tolkien

You don’t have to go to New Zealand to stay in a hobbit house! Hand-built by our family, this cozy in-hill cabin located in the lower area of our property is something right out of a Tolkien novel. Very LGBTQ+ And BIPOC friendly.

This one room Hobbit Hole has everything in it's  7.5x15.5' (cozy): Comfy convertible bed/couch complete with linens, a small table with 2 chairs for playing games and eating, puzzles, games, snacks, hot water kettle, coffee maker, bluetooth speaker, electric fireplace, books, sketchpad with colored pencils, and more!  A rustic wooden floor (with some paint splatters) and a braided rug give you a feeling of comfort and home.  On site we have a private portable bathroom complete with hand-washing station, and an outside combination fire pit and charcoal barbecue with a grill top and  s’mores sticks provided so you can cook over a wood fire or coals!  And an outdoor table and chairs that are super comfortable!

The house itself is heated, insulated, and has working electricity/outlets for computer or phone charger.  Clean bedding and pillows provided, washed in fragrance-free detergent between each guest.  We provide a full water jug with spigot, hot water kettle, teapot, assorted teas, an empty growler to use, 2 pint glasses and 2 mugs.   Private area of the yard with plenty of room to relax.  We have a disc golf goal and discs to use as well.

Firewood is available for purchase onsite for $7/milk crate full. This comes with a kindling kit. Territorial views of the tree line and sunset views to die for! We are located near Meigs Park as well as a 10-minute walk from Manitou beach and an easy bike ride to the ferry that goes to Seattle!  2 miles from the Grand Forest and 3 miles from Battle Point park.  We are exactly 3 miles from the ferry terminal in a convenient mid-island location.

NEED TO KNOW (managing expectations):A note on the bathroom: the hobbit hole is small and will not fit a bathroom or plumbing. Your nearby private portable restroom is cleaned thoroughly between each guest and serviced (pumped out) weekly.  We consider our listing to be “glamping”. Also our property borders a local 2 lane highway and you can expect road noise mostly during the day and evening.  While it is a private setting you can expect to hear the road.   Weekends and evenings it is quieter, and when the door is closed it is quiet.

The Hobbit House is suitable for 2 guests or 2 adults and a small child that can share the bed.  The bed is a queen size, and we can't allow sleeping on the floor as the door opens inwards and is a safety concern.   However, additional guests are welcome to bring a tent and camp outside, for $20/tent, up to 6 additional guests or 2 tents, whichever is smaller.  Let me know when you are booking that you'd like to bring additional guests and we will adjust the costs accordingly.

Rose & Mary were incredibly accomdating hosts- and the cookies were INCREDIBLE. I would plan on arriving in daylight for the easiest time parking, but this is well worth the stay! Have already reccomended to a lot of people. Will be here again.

Staying underground in such a cozy place was truly the best way to spend NYE 2021. It poured down rain but we didn't care as we had plenty of snacks and warm beverages. We played games and brought the laptop to watch some movies. Glad we booked for 2 nights. Looking forward to going back when the weather improves and I might just do a solo trip there someday.
Mary is a fabulous host and attentive as needed. I loved reading the story of how the Hobbit House was built as a clubhouse for Rose in 2011 and that proceeds from the rental go to Rose's college fund. Oh, and the oatmeal coconut cookies were AMAZING!

The hobbit house was the best stay to rule them all. Host baked us fresh cookies! Also, the hobbit house was completely as described. Great place to nerd out and watch Lord of the Rings! Thank you!

Amazing little hole in the ground!

We had a wonderful stay! The sunset view was beautiful to see whilst we sat by the fire, and we were super warm at night which was great!
Our little 14 month old loved everything about the hobbit house and the outdoor space, whilst me and my husband enjoyed the time away from home with no cares to worry about.
We walked to a local coffee shop and also the beach from the house and Mary showed us some local trails a short drive away including how to access public shores.
We had to cut our stay short by a day due to car troubles but cannot wait to go back again soon and do the rest of our planned trip.
No contact check in was really lovely, and the YouTube videos we were sent in advance were completely accurate. Homemade cookies are always a win for me and our beer growler tasted amazing.
Looking forward to a return trip in the near future!

Such a cute little Hobbit Hole! We loved the space and all the details included to really flesh out the experience. It may share property with a couple houses but you wouldn't know it once you've arrived as the structure provides a perfect privacy cliff. And it's Bainbridge Island, so you're only a few minutes drive from anywhere you're trying to get to. We loved it and have already discussed staying again someday.

What a wonderful little hideaway Mary has built originally I believe for her daughter however now all of the proceeds go to her daughter's college education which makes you feel good about your purchase. Even if that weren't the case I promise you'll feel good about your purchase the quaint little guest book shows people from all over the country that have visited this cozy little hobbit house well it's small in one room you don't feel cramped for a second my 5 ft 11 husband slept comfortably and could have been three or four inches taller on the very comfortable pull out futon bed. Mary was incredibly gracious host and send YouTube videos ahead on how to navigate the island and find parking as well as her little Shire. Bainbridge Island is truly another one of hip camps little diamond in the rough. Great for a couples romantic evening by the fire and/ or curled up inside Mary has provided all the little comforts complete with hobbit cards from new Zelda d, colored pencils, tea, coffee, cocoa, snacks and music via blue tooth speaker from our phone. There are no facilities inside of The Hobbit house however just a short walk from the front door is the cleanest Port-A-Potty you've ever used in your entire life so much so that it was hard to believe I was inside of a porta potty complete with motion sensor 30 second light so you're never in the dark. She's also taking the time to put in a disc golf area and a large fire pit tailored towards a fire or a convertible to cook your food over an open fire. They were kind and helpful, Mary even left us her cell number and instructed us to call day or night regardless of whether or not it was an emergency or we just needed some ice. Complete with Mary's own now seemingly slightly famous oatmeal butterscotch cookies. We will be returning to Mary's little Shire again hopefully sooner rather than later this time with one or two of our toddlers as this accommodates couples but also would very easily be a magical adventure for any child. Happy glamping!!!
