Situated at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and bordering the Jefferson National Forest, Thunder BRidge has scenic, large, private tent sites and cabins in the woods for those who want to experience camping at its finest. Many of the sites border Elk Creek. Our RV sites are large, flat and at the edge of the forest in a well kept open green space. Our 100 acres was originally a camp built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the "30s and early '40s, then a boys' juvenile detention center and Big Brothers'/Big Sisters' camp, which closed in 2009. The tent sites and cabins are in the forest, away from the buildings out front, but you're free to walk around and check out the historic site. We'd like to share the camp with others and see it come back to life. All within a short driving distance are the Natural Bridge, wineries, breweries, Natural Bridge Zoo, Safari Park, Dinosaur Kingdom, Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, James River, historic Lexington, Devil's Marbleyard, Glenwood Horse Trail, swimming holes, etc. We have river access 2 miles up the road if you'd like to fish or put your kayak or canoe in. Truly, there is something nearby for everyone. We'd be happy to give you recommendations of things to see and do.

Thunder BRidge Cabin 2 (Parcell)
Adam is a lovely person and he and his family have recently acquired this very cool property with a lot of history. I am sure every year it will get better and better. It is not far off 81 which is great if you are traveling and in a lovely area especially if you want to go to natural bridge or explore. The cabins are truly old. very cool, but very very rustic, so keep that in mind. There is a lovely stream that is crystal clear. We stopped in off season so there wasn't any running water or electricity, but we knew that and enjoyed our overnight as there were no other people and we have a new dog who is new to the camping experience !!

Site 6 (aka Woodpecker 7)
Relaxing campsite
Quiet campsite, by a creek so it creates a white noise affect whenever sleeping. We were the only campers there which was really nice and private for us. The host’s dad came and introduced himself. Very friendly and gave some cool tips. The campfire had a metal grill/stovetop that’s removable. The ground was gravel at the campsite and some areas were just dirt so I can see it getting pretty muddy whenever it rains. Probably not a site whenever it rains since it’s closer to the creek, the dirt was packed on one side of the campfire, so I suspect some flooding whenever there is heavy rain.

RV Site 1
Beautiful site - as described
Everything was as described. The wifi worked well. The RV sites are more "field" than "forest". The tent sites are all in the woods and looked really nice. Adam (camp host) was friendly and helpful. It felt private and peaceful (we were the only RV campers so it might be different with neighbors). We were able to visit the artist studios during an event on Saturday. We had power and water, two picnic tables (one on each side), and a fire pit. Dump station was easily accessed and had water hookups for rinsing. Overall pleased with our experience. We enjoyed hiking back into the property where we got a nice creek view experience.
