History of JW Durango Riverside Resort
It all started in 1965…
When this campground hosted its first guests the goal back then was simply to offer folks from around the Four Corners a place to relax and lounge along the Animas River.
Today, the property boasts 73 quality RV sites, 24 cabins and 6 tent sites. We also have a heated pool, playground, convenience store, retail shop, game room, café with a large deck for dining, laundry room, paved roadways, two bath houses, and an observation deck overlooking the Animas.
The property sits just south of Bakers Bridge, a local landmark made famous as the set of the climactic finale in the movie “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” – where Paul Newman and Robert Redford sat along the rocky cliffs that line the river before they famously took the plunge.
As the lifeblood of this community, the Animas River winds its way under that bridge and south toward historic downtown Durango. Everyone from whitewater enthusiasts and acclaimed fly fisherman to laidback locals in inner tubes enjoy the same flowing mountain waters miners have tapped for more than a century.
Back in 1965, the population of Durango was just over 10,000 and La Plata County almost 20,000. Today, the city itself is home to 20,000 residents while the county is closing in on a staggering 58,000.
As more and more people discover the beauty and majesty of the San Juan National Forest and surrounding Rocky Mountain peaks, the number of people flocking to the Four Corners region continues to grow.

Non-tribal members are not allowed to explore the reservation without a Jicarilla Apache member. You can drive from County Road 357 to Highway 84 towards Pagosa Springs, Colorado to explore the area.
•Rio Chama River: Take a short drive to the Rio Chama River for fly-fishing, or simply picnicking by the water's edge. Chama is also a great place to grab some delicious New Mexican food!
•Carson National Forest: Embark on hiking trails through the Carson National Forest and discover the diverse flora and fauna of the region.
•Jicarilla Apache Cultural Heritage Center: Visit to purchase authentic Jicarilla Apache baskets, beadwork, and artwork.
•Pagosa Springs Hot Springs: Pagosa is in Colorado and is about a 48-minute drive from the tipi’s location. You can take the main Highway or County Road 357 to get there. The County Road is known to the locals as the “shortcut”. Either way, both routes are very beautiful.

Important Information:
•This is a semi-remote and off-grid location. Please be prepared for a rustic experience with access to electricity inside the tipi. We recommend bringing a cooler with food and drinks.
•Respect for the land and its cultural significance is of utmost importance. Please follow any guidelines or restrictions provided by the local Jicarilla Apache Nation.
•Note that the weather in the mountains can be unpredictable, so come prepared with appropriate clothing and gear. Extra blankets, if you get cold easily.

•Outdoor Fire Pit: Enjoy evenings around the outdoor fire pit, perfect for roasting marshmallows, storytelling, or simply taking in the peaceful ambiance.
•BBQ Grill: We provide a propane grill and spatula for cooking your own meals.

Location: Our tipi is on the Jicarilla Apache reservation, offering a unique cultural experience. Explore the area's natural beauty by fishing at Mundo Lake, bird watching, or simply meditating in the tranquility of the surroundings. Don't forget to respect the land and the local traditions during your stay. A fishing permit is required by the Jicarilla Game & Fish Department.

•Archuleta Mesa: Explore the mystical Archuleta Mesa, which has been featured on national TV shows for being known as the Dulce UFO Underground Base. Non-tribal members are not allowed to explore the reservation without a Jicarilla Apache member. You can drive from County Road 357 to Highway 84 towards Pagosa Springs, Colorado to explore the area.
•Rio Chama River: Take a short drive to the Rio Chama River for fly-fishing, or simply picnicking by the water's edge. Chama is also a great place to grab some delicious New Mexican food!
•Carson National Forest: Embark on hiking trails through the Carson National Forest and discover the diverse flora and fauna of the region.
•Jicarilla Apache Cultural Heritage Center: Visit to purchase authentic Jicarilla Apache baskets, beadwork, and artwork.
•Pagosa Springs Hot Springs: Pagosa is in Colorado and is about a 48-minute drive from the tipi’s location. You can take the main Highway or County Road 357 to get there. The County Road is known to the locals as the “shortcut”. Either way, both routes are very beautiful.

Important Information:
•This is a semi-remote and off-grid location. Please be prepared for a rustic experience with access to electricity inside the tipi. We recommend bringing a cooler with food and drinks.
•Respect for the land and its cultural significance is of utmost importance. Please follow any guidelines or restrictions provided by the local Jicarilla Apache Nation.
•Note that the weather in the mountains can be unpredictable, so come prepared with appropriate clothing and gear. Extra blankets, if you get cold easily.
•Please be aware of wildlife in the area.

This is a completely log structure except for the first floor and the views are amazing off of the decks. While the bottom of the mountain is quite populated now, up where we are is still comparatively much less populated. We wanted a log cabin in the mountains and we believe we achieved it. But, you decide.
First floor: 1 bedroom twin over full bunkbed, full bath, mud room, laundry room, large living room; second floor: 2 bedrooms w/queen beds, full bath, kitchen w/island and pantry, dining room, living room. Third floor: 2 bedrooms w/queen beds, full bath, loft area w/futon. Two full decks w/tables and chairs & umbrellas and great views of valley below. Covered walkway w/gas grill. Parking for 3 or 4 vehicles at rear of cabin. Wifi throughout. Satellite tv (direct tv) on 1st and 2nd floors. Lots of pine trees surrounding the cabin. Can hike to the top of the mountain and view Lake Vallecito (45 min hike) deer are usually plentiful and other wildlife as well.

Beautiful! Staff was very nice. We had a beautiful riverside cabin. The river was raging when we arrived due to days of downpours. I was concerned about potential flooding. While it was not near flood level, they kindly and quickly moved us to a cabin several hundred feet from the river bank.

I stayed in the basic cabin (ie, the fancy shed). It was perfect, one queen bed, two twin bunks, ac, heat, ceiling fan and a light. The sites are a little close together but I was not spending the summer so not a big deal, I was there to sleep after spending the day at mesa verde. The grounds and restroom/shower was very neat and clean. I would definitely stay again. There is definitely road noise but as you can see from the posting, they are next to a major road. It was not a big deal in the cabin as I had windows closed as the temps were pretty cool.

Had such a great time! We stayed in the one-room glamping cabin with beautiful views of the river right outside our front door. The bathhouses were very clean, and the showers had excellent water pressure and got nice and hot. The cabin itself was a big upgrade compared to tent camping. The bed was super comfortable (the pillows could have been better, so I recommend bringing your own).
The fridge and microwave were a nice touch, and we appreciated that linens, towels, and trash pick-up were all provided. The activities each night were fun and cute, and the pool was clean and heated. Overall, the whole place was quiet, the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, and we are already looking forward to coming back!

This campground has it all and the rustic cabin is the way to go! Owning our own campground, we like to see how others do it and this was first class. Beautiful location, convenient to mesa verde and Durango, clean bathrooms, nice mattresses, great staff, and all the conveniences of not pitching your own tent. We highly recommend!

Cabin was completely set up with all things we needed: tissues, paper towels, soaps, towels, linens. Spotlessly clean. Campground was small but so cute! Checkerboards everywhere to play. Hammock. Ladder golf. Gorgeous pool. And great staff. Loved it!

I loved the amenities of the campground and glamping cabin. We booked this as a break from tent camping during a trip to the Colorado national parks and it had everything we needed. The proximity of the cabin to the river made the site feel private and peaceful. The cabin was clean and the bed was comfortable. There is no air conditioning in the cabin so it could get hot during the day but stayed cool at night. I would recommend to anyone and stay again!

Group trip
Staying at JW was great. The rustic cabin was perfect for 2 snuggly adults and 2 teens. We were just yards from the observation deck over the river but there isn’t river access in the camp. The kids loved the pool and the game room. The site was clean and well cared for. The showers were hot as well as the water for washing dishes. We will be back!
