Seaside Farm is a 30 acre, magical, park like farm on the shores of Kachemak Bay, just outside of Homer, a few miles down from the Kilcher Homestead where I grew up in the 1940's! . Now a song bird sanctuary, with trails, lawns, gardens, trees, hay fields, and a private beach, cabins, a clover camping meadow, Seaside was once part of an original Alaska pioneer homestead. It is also the home of hundreds of songbirds, moose, coyotes, wild hares, flocks of sandhill cranes, two sweet Morgan Horses, an assortment of chickens and visitors seeking peace, nature, wildlife, pristine beaches, in a real Alaska, non touristy setting. This property has three different types accommodations: Rustic, cozy cabins, a big field for tent campers, and a few spaces reserved for 4 wheel drive vans, and small vehicle camping, including rooftop tents If you prefer camping away from the tourist crowds, you will find our soft clover meadows and well kept lawns, a deluxe and memorable experience. The beach is a short walk down the trail, where its peaceful and private, with only the sound of the seagulls and waves. Van campers have a few special areas to park their vehicles, with views of the glaciers and mountains. There is limited parking and turnaround space, and we like our farm not too crowded, to provide a special rural experience to all who visit. It helps to call or text before you arrive to make sure we are on site and can help you with parking! There are three cabins sprinkled throughout the property. Two are off grid, close to the beach, private and magical, with wood stoves. All cabins are able to use the main farm lodge amenities, just a few minutes walk away but have their own outhouses, all with amazing views! You can walk on the beach from the main lodge parking area, there is a covered camping pavilion available to all guests, a communal campfire spot and bbq grill, lovely maintained walking trails and meadows, and even wifi! We allow most dogs, but ask you to contact us before booking with us, so we can let you know our rules before you travel. All dogs must be well behaved, social, on leashes and at owner's side at all times to protect our trusting wildlife from accidental harm, like our baby pheasants, moose, bunnies, and songbird nests!

A few things that make my place unique: My 5 acres is part of the famous 620-acre Kilcher Homestead, as seen on “Alaska the Last Frontier” TV show. I am the 7th of the 8 children; Atz and Otto are my brothers. There is a special feeling here vibrating in the land, and why our parents picked this spot. Full outdoor kitchen with all you need to cook and wash up; BBQ, hotplate, pure drinking water, spices, pots/pans/dishes etc. The atmosphere feels so pure, so silent, so wild yet comfortable. Drive-in access sometimes, or have to walk 15 minutes, and no issues with mosquitoes!!! You get to meet me and maybe other family members as you cruise around. Homer is 35 minutes away, with oodles of things to do there: great restaurants, a lap pool, fun shopping, etc. We have quite good cell reception here. Lots of options to enjoy your stay!

There is one tiny bedroom with a queen-size bed, and two twin-size floor mats for children or friends who lose at rock-paper-scissors for the “real” bed. BOUYLAND

13. BOUYLAND

29mi from Kachemak Bay State Park and State Wilderness Park · 1 site
Located seven miles from downtown Homer, the drive up East Hill and along Skyline Drive offers outstanding views of Kachemak Bay. BOUYLAND is completely surrounded by the Inspiration Ridge Wildlife Preserve; our 800-foot driveway is a frequent path for moose. A short walk through the alders reveals a vast panorama of Mt. Redoubt, Lookout Mountain, Beaver Creek, Bald Mountain, Fritz Creek, and the Kachemak Mountains. The Setting The scenery is beautiful, but amenities are sparse. Access is via a narrow grass driveway. The toilet is a clean, comfortable outhouse—best used with the door open to take in the view. There is no running water at the "Cabinette." The Pros Peace & Privacy: Away from the town bustle with a fair chance a moose will walk right past you. The Views: Incredible sunsets behind Mt. Redoubt. Nature: High and dry with hardly any bugs. Fresh Water: I developed a cool spring on-site in 2025. The Cons Rustic: Outhouse only and underdeveloped. Shared Space: We live on the lot (2.77 acres) and will drive past you. We’ll likely bump into each other, but you’re free to explore. Daytime Noise: Trucks occasionally haul gravel off Ohlsen Mt. in the summer. They rumble past (out of sight) during the day, but mornings and evenings are peaceful. Adventure & Trails We are directly adjacent to an Inspiration Ridge Wildlife Preserve trailhead. Explore Ohlsen Mtn Rd for hilly gravel/mountain biking with views of Mt. Iliamna. For road cyclists, Skyline Drive offers "sporty" riding to the Sterling Highway (expect some rough patches). The Wynn Nature Center is just two miles away, and the hike up Lookout Mountain to the VORTAC is a local favorite. The Legend of BOUYMAN BOUYLAND is the birthplace and home of BOUYMAN. Thirty years ago, this was a major attraction where 1,000 buoys and 1,000 lights festooned a circular grove of spruce. Though spruce bark beetles eventually took the grove, the spirit remains: BOUYMAN LIVES!

Hidden Springs Homestead is the remote, far NE corner of the original Homer Smith homestead patent. We are 14 miles from Homer Alaska by road. The property abuts a million acres of remote Alaska wilderness. The log cabin was built in 1973 out of local Lutz Spruce. It has large green lawn rhubarb and berry gardens, sod roofed sauna and out house. We offer one very private campsite for tent, campervan, or truck camper (flat gravel back in site). A rustic outhouse is available for your use. Please follow the outhouse rules. No potable water. Additionally, 15-amp electric service is available for an additional fee. Because we are adjacent to the Alaskan wilderness we can have wildlife around. No hunting is allowed on the property and brown and black bears, wolves, moose, porcupine, lynx and other wild creatures are around. We will brief you in person on avoiding encounters while moving about in this amazing place. Consider carrying bear spray deterrent when walking/hiking/camping anywhere in rural Alaska.

Kachemak Bay State Park and State Wilderness Park camping guide

Overview

About

Accessible only by boat or plane, Kachemak Bay State Park—Alaska’s first state park—offers 400,000 acres of preserved wilderness, with ample hiking, fishing, wildlife spotting, and kayaking. Over 85 miles of trails run through the park, with hiking routes that lead through forests and out to glaciers, plus a hand-operated cable car for the willing and brave. You can camp in most of the park, and there are designated campsites with fire rings, picnic tables, toilets, bear lockers, and tent platforms. There are also a few cabins and yurts for those who want more creature comforts.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • There are 21 campsites available at the park, but they can't be reserved in advance. The best way to secure your site is to plan your visit for the middle of the week.
  • Park maps detailing the locations of all campsites are available and can be useful for those looking for a spot to set up a tent.
  • The park has six public-use cabins, available to reserve up to seven months in advance through Alaska State Parks. There are also six privately managed yurts scattered throughout the park. Additional information is available through the Homer Ranger Station.

When to go

Kachemak Bay State Park is very much a summer destination, and access is limited during the long snowy winters. Opening dates vary depending on snow conditions,  but the park is generally open from the middle of May until the beginning of September. Temperatures are at their warmest in July and August, but always be prepared for sudden and extreme weather changes.

Know before you go

  • There's no road access to the park, so the only way to get here is by boat or plane. Water taxis and air charters from Homer are available.
  • For those traveling with their own boats, there's an 80-foot dock at Halibut Cove Lagoon that can accommodate boats up to 26 feet in length, available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Be prepared for long periods of daylight. Light sleepers who want to ensure they get their beauty rest should probably pack an eye mask.
  • Do not leave food remnants anywhere in the park. Bear-resistant trash cans are available throughout the park.
