Overview

About

Artists Palette is truly a stunning sight to behold when passing through the Death Valley National Park. Hidden in an expanse of golden hills, this phenomenon hs created large swaths of bright colorful soil due to volcanic deposits rich in various compounds. The stunning blue-green and deep red hills are the highlight of the Artists Drive Scenic Loop and adventuring on this trail has the added benefit of your cars air-conditioning.

When to go

The best time to visit Artists Palette is during the cooler months from November to March, when the desert temperature is mild. Summer visits are challenging due to extreme heat. Early morning or late afternoon offers the most dramatic light for viewing the colors.

Know before you go

  • Check weather conditions before your visit, as summer temperatures can be extreme.
  • Artists Drive is a one-way loop with a vehicle length restriction of 25 ft. due to sharp bends.
  • There are no maintained trails, but several pullouts allow for exploration.
  • Facilities include historical exhibits, parking, scenic viewpoints, and vault toilets.
