Neighbors are far away, so we have some of the darkest skies in the world,d not to mention peace and quiet with no traffic. We have spectacular mountain views with great sunrises and sunsets. Our terrain is the Chihuahuan desert which has cactus-covered rocky mountains with all the desert plants. Although we have privacy, we are only about 35 to 40 minutes from the Big Bend National Park and the Big Bend Ranch State Park. Although we are remote, we have a very nice swimming pool and restaurant only about ten to fifteen minutes away. We have two cabins that we rent out. The big cabin has four rooms and sleeps six. The other cabin is called the small cabin, which is one room and sleeps two.

The main living area has a pull out queen sofa bed, seating area, mini-split A/C unit, a full kitchen with a gas two-burner cooktop, microwave, full-size fridge with ice maker, pots, pans, cooking utensils, dishes, wine glasses, Keurig coffee machine, and complimentary coffee and creamer.
The full bathroom has a flush toilet, hot shower, towels, hairdryer, soap and shampoo, plush bathrobes, and a claw-foot tub for your soaking enjoyment.
The large, sliding glass door of the main room faces the stunning Chisos Mountains, overlooking the tipis. The patio is equipped with an outdoor seating area, BBQ grill, private fire pit, and hammock.

Superb place and perfect location. Highly recommend! The comfier suites are probably worth the upgrade. The cheaper rooms have a carport but are closer to the highway so plan for a bit of road noise.

There is something very charming and spiritual about Jim’s cabin and land. As a solo female traveler, I felt very safe and at peace. Jim is a true Texas gem — I could listen to his stories for hours.
The cabin is clean and eclectically decorated. I enjoyed walking around and looking at his collected treasures. It’s in a wonderfully quiet area with no road noise or loud neighbors. It’s very easy to stare off into the mountains and lose yourself in the views, especially at sunrise or sunset. The nighttime sky alone was worth the 10-hour drive.
The Wi-Fi was stronger at this remote cabin than in my own suburban house. It would be very easy to work remotely from here if needed.
It felt like a real privilege to stay here. Jim isn’t going to become a millionaire renting out this cabin at such a low price. It feels like a true labor of love that he’s chosen to share with the world.
You’ll enjoy every minute here and find it hard to leave. I’m already planning next year’s trip.
Items I would bring: lots of drinking water, trash bags, a propane tank (like those used for a gas BBQ grill), and paper towels. Although Jim has all of this stocked, I found myself using more than I normally would and felt bad depleting his supplies.

The best experience I ever had! Jim is very welcoming and friendly. The cabin he built is stuffed with love and intention. Everything is so thoughtful and well made.
If you go there, you have to watch the night sky! It is beyond comprehension.
Suited for 2, perfect for 4, maybe a little narrow for 6. Bring enough water and supplies.
Thoughtful use of resources like water and electricity is mandatory.

My wife and I really enjoyed our 3 week stay at Casa de Keavany during January. Our host Jim was very attentive and helped provide the local perspective for our activities. If peace, quiet and serenity are what you are looking for, than look no further. The views are spectacular in every direction. The cozy comfy cabin provided all the conveniences we were looking for in this off the grid setting. We love spending time in Big Bend National park and Terlingua and are looking forward to a return trip!

Jim's cabin was as described, and with added comforts including a flush toilet, shower and bed on the lower level so these older bones didn't have to climb a steep stairway each night! Jim was available, helpful and friendly, assisting with any issues that came up.

This is absolutely a beautiful park. You can hike or ride in your car from one area to another. The eco diversity, history, and views are amazing. Dinosaur bones and coral remains at 7,000 plus feet leaves you speechless. A visit to the hot spring is a welcomed treasure in the park. The staff is welcoming and helpful. There are plenty of shops to pick up souvenirs, food/snacks, and gear that you might need. I can't wait to go back!!

Big Bend NP
Tucked into the furthest corner of West Texas where the Rio Grande carves the border between two countries, Big Bend National Park operates on a scale that feels almost mythological. The Santa Elena Canyon hike is worth the drive alone — walking into that narrow slot where 1,500-foot limestone walls rise straight out of the river on both sides, the light falling in at impossible angles, is one of the most breathtaking things I have experienced in the outdoors. And then night fell. I happened to be there during a full moon, and the sky over Big Bend — already one of the least light-polluted places in the continental United States — became something I don’t have adequate words for. Stars from horizon to horizon, the Milky Way sharp enough to reach out and touch, and the canyon silhouetted beneath it all. Big Bend doesn’t beg for your attention. It just waits for you to show up — and then it changes you

We did a couple of hikes that we really liked Cattail Falls, Lost Mine Trail and Indian Head. It is a beautiful park. A border wall will be devastating! It is not needed at Big Bend!

Santa Elena Hot Take
Big Bend is stunning!! The recommended hiking times for Santa Elena Canyon in May, is before 10:30am to avoid heat but find that the sun comes up on the Mexico side of the canyon and shines on the trail during the hike. We chose to start our hike at 6:30 and the sun was just starting to go down on the American side of the canyon, so the trail was shaded the entire way. Plus, very few people on the trail and we had the river to ourselves. Bonus, there is shade over the entire river so picture turned out beautiful without the harsh sun and shadows, then you can watch sunset at the Santa Elena overlook or on your drive back to camp

We stayed in the small RV area with hookups- so glad we did because it was over 100 most days we were there.
Very nice staff un store to check us in, campground is basic (our site was missing its table. But we had power, showers and were in Big Bend! Good location for birdwatching.

Big Bend is a rarity in the NPS system because it offers three distinct ecosystems in one park: the Chihuahuan Desert, the Rio Grande, and the Chisos Mountains. It’s one of the few places where you can be standing in a high-altitude pine forest at noon and be looking at a limestone canyon in the desert by sunset. I visited here back in the '90s which is not an option to tag on hipcamp. Did a backpacking trip on the south rim and it was amazing!
