Hiking Guadalupe
We did 2 hikes at the park. The first one was Devil's Den that was an easy hike out and back. This is a fun hike that goes thru the wash and leads you to high cliffs. The second hike was up to Guadalupe Peak that was challenging, but worth the views. You could see our campsite from the pinnacle at the top (it reflects the sunlight around 12-1PM that you can see with binoculars)

Guad Peak - The best! Come Prepared!
Guadalupe Mnts NP is one of the least visited and highly underrated NPs.
It hosts the highest point in Texas (Guadalupe Peak), and a host of other trails like McKitrick Canyon and historical sites like an old Butterfield overland mail station.
If you hike Guadalupe peak, plan in advance. It is strenuous, and would encourage folks to prepare physically if not regularly participating in strenuous exercise.
The first third and bottom third of the peak is the hardest part of the hike. The middle and top portions of the hike are the “easiest”. There are several “false summit’s” so chop up your hike into different legs.
Budget a minimum of 8 hours to do the hike, and 10 if you go slow. I’d also reccomend to start early in the morning, so you are off the mountain during peak daylight hours. There are folks who do sunset hikes and then hike down the mountain under light in the darkness.
Sun exposure is huge. It’s recommended to bring at least 4-5L of water for the hike. Also any electrolyte tablets and food are helpful. Bring long sleeve shirts and a hat that will cover your face and nose.
The reward is breathtaking scenery across New Mexico, West Texas, and the Salt Basin. On a clear day you may see Mexico, and on a cloudy day, you’ll be watching the clouds roll over you at the top of the mountain! My wife and I made it to the peak and it was incredibly rewarding for the both of us.

Camped at the Good Guad campsite and hiked through McKittrick ridge. Very underrated national park I would definitely recommend it to anyone.

Beautiful mountain range in West Texas
Incredible mountain range on the Texas and New Mexico border. Definitely worth the stop if you’re in the area. I visited in March 2023, it was still quite cool out and we felt like we had the park to ourselves.

An Ancient Reef
If you are visiting Carlsbad, don’t miss the short drive to the Guadalupe Mountains. The ground is made of ancient seashells from when Texas was underwater!

Pine Springs Campground
If you’re going to hike up Guadalupe Peak, then staying at Pine Springs campground is a must after conquering the peak. The only thing you’re gonna wanna do is rest and recover.
