White sands is one of the smaller, more self-contained parks. The weather in early January was good. The sand looks like snow and was cool but not cold to the touch. It is nice viewing the dunes with mountains in the background. It is bright enough you will want sunscreen and sunglasses. The main activity is sledding, although the it can be challenging to find a dune with a slope steep enough and long enough, many people seem to enjoy it. I did not see much wildlife at all when I was there.

Lovely but get there early!
Beautiful and lovely place to hike with dogs. Get there early to avoid the crowds. We got there at 7 and there were about 20 cars alongside us. By noon, the line to get into the park was 100+ cars on either side of the road! Highly recommend downloading the NPS app for notifications on traffic and whatnot.

The park itself was absolutely gorgeous. It felt like a scene out of a movie! You absolutely have to go during the sunset. My partner and I gave ourselves a hour to complete the dune drive, and climb up a few dunes to watch the sunset. I will say the restrooms at the visitor center were so gross. The gift shop is small, nothing crazy fancy. It was odd because the employees working there were in sweatshirts?? They didn’t look like NPS employees really. But none of that even matters. The park was so beautiful. Definitely recommend!!

It was a while ago while in the military we went to White Sands. Looks like snow or the most perfect beach in the world. Either way it was amazing.

Best and most beautiful before sunset! Awesome
Too hot to visit in the summer unless you go right before sunset. Sunset is the best! Absolutely breath taking! My favorite place in the U.S. I loved watching our 10 year old son run through the sand as the sun was setting. He even slid down some larger hills on a board. We have the best pictures ever of that time, especially with the sunset right before the park closed.
