Established around the site of an old camp dating back to 1792, this county park features a 272-acre mountain lake surrounded by 1,900 acres of lush hardwood forest. The park's origins trace back to 1959, when land was acquired and a dam was constructed, leading to its official opening to the public in 1966. Visitors to Lake Stephens can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, camping, fishing, and boating. The park is open from May 1st to September 30th, providing ample opportunities to explore the great outdoors. Its rustic charm is enhanced by the use of native field stone, offering a cozy atmosphere while still providing modern conveniences. Located just nine miles west of Beckley, West Virginia, and a short 25-minute drive from the breathtaking New River Gorge National Park, Lake Stephens is an ideal spot for both RV and tent camping. The campground features 100 RV campsites and 27 tent sites, complete with amenities such as a camp store offering essentials like ice, wood, and propane.
