Thunder BRidge

Situated at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and bordering the Jefferson National Forest. Cabin 2 (Parcell cabin) is a charming log cabin with a large lot, 2 picnic tables, grill and fire pit. It is close to Elk Creek. There are 5 cushioned cots downstairs with additional cots in the loft. Bring your own bedding and pillows. The lot the cabin is on is large enough for other tents, if you want to have another family join you. There will be an additional cost for more people. There is no electric or water in the cabin so you will want to bring a lantern and flashlights. There is water available at the pavilion to fill your water jugs. There is an outhouse just outside the cabin, but a short walk will take you to the bath house if you want a shower and a flushing toilet. Our 100 acres was originally a camp built by the Civilian Conservation Corp back in the '30s and early '40s, then a boys’ juvenile detention center and Big Brothers’/Big Sisters’ camp, which closed in 2009. We'd like to share the camp with others and see it come back to life. Within a short driving distance are the Natural Bridge, wineries, breweries, Natural Bridge Zoo, Safari Park, Dinosaur Kingdom, Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, James River, historic Lexington, Devil’s Marbleyard, Glenwood Horse Trail, swimming holes, etc. We have river access 2 miles up the road if you'd like to fish or put a kayak in. Truly, there's something for everyone nearby. We'd be happy to give you recommendations for things to see and do. We've decided to keep the cabin open for the winter months (Dec. through March) but the bath house will not be open unless we have unseasonably warm temperatures. There will be outhouses for your use and we can provide drinking water if you need it.

Site 3 (aka Butterfly 1)

Screened cabin #3, aka Butterfly 1, is close to Cabin 2 (butterfly 3) and would be a great place for families to be somewhat nearby each other. It is very close to Elk Creek, with a wonderful bench to sit and watch the water trickle by and let your worries go. We've decided to keep this site open for the winter months (Dec. through March) but the bath house will not be open unless we have unseasonably warm temperatures. There will be outhouses for your use and we can provide drinking water if you need it.

Screened shelter #1, aka Woodpecker 1, is a sheltered site within hearing range of Elk Creek. A great place to get away. There are 6 cots with table and chairs, barbecue pit and a short walk away from the pavilion and bath house. Lie in bet and look out at nature.

Site 3, aka Bunny 5, is a very large site which can accommodate a few tents and is very private. It's close to the creek and one of our favorite tent sites. You can't drive your car right up to the site though. You have to walk perhaps 100 yards or so.

Site 10, aka Bear 2, is a wonderful large site, in the woods, yet close to the pasture where the ball field and obstacle course are. Plenty of room and privacy for your family. We've decided to keep this site open for the winter months (Dec. through March) but the bath house will not be open unless we have unseasonably warm temperatures. Site 7 (aka Fox 1)

Site 7, aka Fox 1, is a large secluded site. It is one of only 2 sites on this gravel road. It has a flat, fine gravel tent pad, a picnic table and fire pit with a cooking grate. We've decided to keep this site open for the winter months (Dec. through March) but the bath house will not be open unless we have unseasonably warm temperatures. There will be outhouses for your use and we can provide drinking water if you need it.

Site 9 (aka Butterfly 2)

Site 9, aka Butterfly 2, is a spacious site with plenty of parking and room for more than one tent. We've decided to keep this site open for the winter months (Dec. through March) but the bath house will not be open unless we have unseasonably warm temperatures. New site. Located 500 feet from bathroom/Pavilion. Has 6ft Picnic Table, Fire Pit with Cooking Grate and elevated Tent Pad. Only 1 neighboring site (Bunny 2, about 250 feet away). Surrounded by forest yet within quick walk to water, electrical and internet access. Will not accommodate teardrop, other small camper trailers or camper vans.

Site 3 (aka Butterfly 1)

The entire place is fantastic! The sites are all well maintained, wooded, and close to the creek. We stayed in Butterfly 1 (screened in cabin) and we absolutely loved it. Great swimming holes nearby (5-10 minute car ride) and the creek that runs through camp is refreshing. The pavilion has a ping pong table, horse shoes, and cornhole. The bathrooms are nice and clean. Spoke to one of the owners and he was very kind and took his time to tell us about the history of the land. We will 100% be back.

I had a lovely time staying here at the Woodpecker 1 site. The site is a very close walk to the Pavillion which has showers, toilets and electricity. It still felt very secluded with beautiful trails and scenery. I took my doggo and we had the best time. The beds were comfy, just bring your own linens and blankets. A couple of convenience stores nearby, one is on the road to the campground, maybe 5 mins (or less) away, that has just about anything you could need. Adam was a fantastic host, communicative, helpful and quick to respond. There are great hikes nearby, for experienced or beginners. I would 100% stay here again.

Loved it! Would def go back! Spacious, private, well maintained sites with plenty of space between. Clean bathrooms with hot showers (a luxury after we swam in a nearby swimming hole!). From our site, we could see the bathhouse and the door to the ping pong room- which was awesome and helped our kids stayed in view with a little freedom. Adam was super responsive before and during our stay. Great host. You might want ear plugs JIC. A pack of dogs or coyotes was loud in the distance our 1st night, but quiet the other two. The artist village had an open house when we were there- so many talented people and beautiful works. We had 2 families, and there were spots for both tents (and technically a 3rd if we'd needed it).

Site 9 (aka Butterfly 2)

Our group loved the location! Adam was easy to communicate with and showed us to our campsite on arrival. The campground was close to Natural Bridge State Park and close enough to Blue Ridge Pkwy for other adventures. The campsite was spacious, quiet, and close to an outhouse. The bath house was attached to a recreation room with AC which was glorious for the afternoon heat. Even better, Elk Creek was just a short walk away, so we were able to cool off there too. We will definitely be staying here again for future camping adventures. This place is also dog friendly which was the cherry on top!

We had a great stay. At our site we enjoyed sounds of the creek and a few minutes (3-5) walk to the pavilion / restrooms. Thunder BRidge is peaceful, well-maintained, and close to several area attractions. Our 6 & 8 year olds enjoyed the old “obstacle course” and running on the field.

BRidge Cabin

We stayed in the large primitive cabin at Thunder Bridge Campground and had a great experience. The cabin was rustic, as expected, but spacious and comfortable for a primitive setup. It had enough room for our group and gave off that classic back-to-nature vibe we were hoping for. The surroundings were peaceful, with beautiful views and easy access to the creek and trails. Even without electricity or running water in the cabin, it felt like an upgrade from tent camping. The fire pit outside was perfect for evening campfires, and the porch gave us a great place to relax and take in the quiet. Staff was friendly and helpful, and the campground overall was clean and well-maintained. It’s a great spot if you're looking to unplug and enjoy some time in nature without totally roughing it. We’ll definitely come back.

We had basically the entire campgrounds to ourselves, which was great! Adam was very responsive to a question about firewood. WiFi works well at the pavilion/bathroom and showers had hot water. Our site (Bunny 2) had a large cooking grate to pull over the campfire which, was very helpful. The old climbing wall on this campsite is cool but you can’t climb it for safety reasons. About a 10 minute drive from Natural Bridge park. Would recommend!

This campsite was an incredible experience! The host was amazing and offered a great firewood deal, making it easy and convenient instead of buying elsewhere. The facilities were clean and well-maintained, which made the stay even more enjoyable. One of the best parts was the spacing between tents—unlike many other campgrounds, there was plenty of privacy, creating a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. Highly recommend!

This is a hidden gem! Adam is a superb host, kindly accommodating our later-than-planned arrival and providing us with all of the information needed for making our stay there fabulous. Definitely take Adam up on his offer of firewood -- we enjoyed several nights by the fireside gazing up at clear night skies (unusual for where we live). We selected a "rustic" RV site as we had ample electricity and didn't need to continuously fill our water tanks, but it was really nice to have water and electricity options close-by for quickly charging my laptop, re-filling our RV water tank, and dumping our grey water. This is an ideal place to bring dogs as there is so much space to explore -- 100 acres, including a creek! Our four nights at Adam's campground with our two dogs was the relaxing vacation we needed. It also was well situated for exploring the Natural Bridge, Lexington and other attractions in the area. I would jump at the chance to return in the future. Adam is a great host!
