Situated at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and bordering the Jefferson National Forest, Thunder BRidge has scenic, large, private tent sites and cabins in the woods for those who want to experience camping at its finest. Many of the sites border Elk Creek. Our RV sites are large, flat and at the edge of the forest in a well kept open green space. Our 100 acres was originally a camp built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the "30s and early '40s, then a boys' juvenile detention center and Big Brothers'/Big Sisters' camp, which closed in 2009. The tent sites and cabins are in the forest, away from the buildings out front, but you're free to walk around and check out the historic site. Most of the buildings out front are artist studios (currently for 16 artists). We like to share the camp with others and watch it come back to life. All within a short driving distance are the Natural Bridge, wineries, breweries, Natural Bridge Zoo, Safari Park, Dinosaur Kingdom, Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, James River, historic Lexington, Devil's Marbleyard, Glenwood Horse Trail, swimming holes, etc. We have river access 2 miles up the road if you'd like to fish or put your kayak or canoe in. Truly, there is something nearby for everyone. We'd be happy to give you recommendations of things to see and do. If you are a star gazer you won't be disappointed by our dark sky. We want to share our property with those who want to stay for more than one night, so we do not accept inquiries of single night stays. We also don't offer longterm rentals as we focus on short term camping.

Situated at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and bordering the Jefferson National Forest. Cabin 2 (Parcell cabin) is a charming log cabin with a large lot, 2 picnic tables, grill and fire pit. It is close to Elk Creek. There are 5 cushioned cots downstairs with additional cots in the loft. Bring your own bedding and pillows. The lot the cabin is on is large enough for other tents, if you want to have another family join you. There will be an additional cost for more people. There is no electric or water in the cabin so you will want to bring a lantern and flashlights. There is water available at the pavilion to fill your water jugs. There is an outhouse just outside the cabin, but a short walk will take you to the bath house if you want a shower and a flushing toilet. Great place to be at. You will feel completely disconnected from the fast pace life here. We spent our July 4th weekend there which was supposed to be super hot, but we didn’t feel uncomfortable and not hot at all. The creek and the trees help to cool down the temperature which was prefect.

This was our second time staying at Thunder BRidge. Even though it was the hottest weekend imaginable, we still had a great time. The primitive “cabin” was perfect for our friends who don’t typically go camping. We visited a couple swimming holes near by to cool off. We will be back in the fall!

Visited Bunny 3 just before Fourth of July weekend during a record heat wave, and thanks to the mature trees and natural canopy, we barely felt the heat. When we wanted to cool off, the swimming hole was just a short drive away. I camped with my 3-year-old daughter, and this site was conveniently located near the pavilion and bath house. Adam was a great host. He delivered the firewood we purchased through the app and included a campground map. The arrival video was especially helpful since we lost cell service once we entered the campground. We loved seeing a family of deer roaming near the entrance, and the site itself exceeded our expectations. Two picnic tables, a bench by the fire ring, a large stone fire ring with cooking grates, the gravel tent pad that was easy on the knees, and perfectly spaced trees for hammocks made this an incredible stay. This was only our second camping trip ever, and Bunny 3 has officially become our standard for what we’ll look for in future campsites. We’ll definitely be back!

Adam is incredibly attentive to the needs of guests. Always quick to respond if you have a question and last minute delivery of wood needed? He’s there. I’ve never gone to a site that isn’t clean and tidy, and you can’t go wrong with any of the sites. He really did a nice job of trying to make sure sites are on top of each other. After the day of hiking or hanging out at the lake, you could have the devil’s back brewery for a bite. Highly recommend.

We found Adam’s campground on Google Map and searched on how to book it. The process was easy and the review showed Woodpecker 3 was close to the bathhouse and had a cover over the picnic table. We also purchased a pack of wood that sufficient for our stay. We had a great experience and Adam was very responsive and stopped by to say hi. The facility is clean and quiet. Nice place to chill after a day of outdoor activities. Highly recommended.

The camp was great! It felt very isolated out in the woods which was fantastic! It was only a short walk to the pavilion so it was pretty easy to grab a shower/connect to WiFi if needed. The property is large enough my wife and I were able to get some long runs in by just doing a few laps around. The camp site is close enough to a water tap in the field so it's easy to get water. Adam was extremely helpful and professional. The entire campground is really well kept. Very great experience!

What a great location…but this seems to be some tripe of abandoned youth facility, kind of like a boys camp. Bathroom super clean, tent spots way better in the woods on the creek. RV spots kind of on an old baseball field. We were the only Rv in the campground, nice but a bit eerie. All in all if they keep upgrading this will be a solid campground.

3 Year Old’s First Time Camping!

Woodpecker 1 was amazing for our daughter’s first time camping. The inside was clean of all bugs. Just a short walk to the pavilion and bathroom. The camp itself is very large and has many different things to explore. Adam was always around camp somewhere if we ever needed anything. The creek is a short walk through the woods. Thunder Bridge Cabin 2 (Parcell)

Thunder bridge is the perfect hidden gem! The moment you enter the canopy of the forest your mood changes. The log cabins and the screened cabins are perfect for those who do not want to pop up a tent No electricity at the sites but be prepared with backup battery charger or head down to the lodge where there is electricity and WiFi! Bring plenty of drinking water I don’t think the water there is potable. We drank what we boiled and are fine! Adam the owner is great! He checks you in and leaves you alone!

Adams campground is great very awesome place really cool Creek and lots of old and historical buildings. I did have a tree on the main road on my way back to the campground fall right on my car while I was driving and destroy it 😅 but Adam was super helpful and accommodating great camp host! Great getaway for a rainy weekend

We had such a fun weekend camping at Thunderbridge. The campsite is beautiful in the spring time. It did rain all weekend but we stayed in the cabin which was a really cool experience. It’s very cozy with a dining table and a living room area with a fire place. The beds are comfortable and the front porch is an awesome place to chill out. We have access to the creek which the kids loved playing in. Their favorite part was riding their bicycles around the campsite . There is a bathhouse with hot showers and a place to clean gear and dishes. Adam is a great host and brought us firewood when we ran out. We will definitely be back ;)

Having wood covered to keep dry at my site was amazing. The site was clean and private. We ended up at Bunny site 5 for tents. We enjoyed the offerings at the pavilion and bathrooms were well kept.

Cream of the crop for us!

First off, Adam is awesome, exceptional host very responsive and helpful. Entire camp ground and amenities are clean and very well taken care of. We had 4 sites total. Wife and I, our 3 grown children & spouses and 6 grandchildren. Everyone loved it and had a great time. Adam has the sites nicely spaced so we all had our space, which as everyone knows space can be needed at large family gatherings. We love our family camping trips and Thunder Bridge is at the top of the list for next year, or sooner maybe.
