Off-lead friendly
Pets can be off-lead at this Hipcamp.
Flats is located conveniently off a paved road about half-way between Van Horn and Valentine. 20 minutes from Valentine and the Prada Store, 50 minutes from Marfa 60 minutes from Davis Mountains State Park 75 minutes from Guadalupe Mountains National Park Visitors Center 3 hours from Panther Junction Visitor Center in Big Bend Although our property is only five acres, we have no close neighbors. You can see a few other homesteads from here, many of which are unoccupied. For the most part it is very quiet, with only a handful of vehicles passing by on any given day. We have stars, rocks, views, solitude, and art. Within view of the property are Matthew Grey’s large-scale sculptures Broken Mile and Mile Dark, with a third sculpture underway. We are also in the process of installing our own installations on the property. We are an off-grid property running on well water and solar with a backup propane generator. Please keep in mind that our sites do not have unlimited water and electricity, and that you may hear a generator at times. We have a great setup here, and we enjoy the simplicity that comes with this lifestyle. With that said, this is a campsite, not a glampsite. Lobo Flats is Marfa’s dusty, crusty cousin and we like it that way. The campground is a brand-new endeavor; we welcome feedback as we refine the off-grid experience that we share with campers. We are an introvert friendly establishment, and while there will typically be someone around to help during your stay, you will have all the privacy you desire.School’s Out is a fenced, quarter-acre campsite on the back corner of our property. It has mountain & sunset views, a cozy furnished 1989 Bluebird school bus, outdoor kitchen and off-grid bathhouse with composting toilet. There is a solar charged battery that provides a modest amount of power to the bus. This is not typically a problem with conservative use of lights, etc. There is Starlink wifi on the property with a decent signal at the bus. There is no running water in the bus; however, we provide Marfa tap water for drinking and cooking, and well water for washing. The well water is potable, but naturally salty. The bus has heat both in the form of a propane wall heater, and a heated mattress pad. In the summer, the bus can be cooled by the desert breeze if you open the windows. We can bring you a swamp cooler too, but please be aware that it can be very hot out here and there is no AC. The outdoor kitchen has a sink, propane burner and basic cooking equipment. If you need something not provided, feel free to text us as we might have what you need in the house. The privacy, quiet, simplicity and the natural beauty is what we love about living here, and we hope you’ll enjoy it as well. Suggested Activities: Listen to records Enjoy the night skies Take a walk around the neighborhood (ask us where to go) and look for rocks Visit Matthew Grey’s sculptures Watch a DVD on a Commodore monitor Well behaved and monitored dog are welcome, but please use common sense and pick up after them. Please do not leave your pet in the school bus when you are gone. If we are available, we will happily pet-sit for a reasonable additional fee. We are open to inquiries, feedback, and last-minute bookings. We'll do what we can to accommodate. More photos coming shortly:)
