Carl & Vicki's land is a working cattle/bison ranch that sits on the Dakota-Nebraska Eroded Tableland. It is a diverse landscape of canyons, prairie, streams and ponds. Carl's grandmother filed a homestead claim on this ranch in 1914. We are close to the Niobrara Scenic River, Smith Falls, Fort Falls, and Fort Niobrara Wildlife Refuge. Birding, hiking, stargazing and canoeing are a few of the activities for the person who wants to experience the peace and quiet of this beautiful landscape. Educational bison/prairie tours are available.

On top of treed bluffs overlooking the Niobrara River, the views were stunning. The hosts were very gracious, informative, helpful and interesting - an absolute pleasure to meet. The bison operation is fascinating and gladdens the heart to see. This is so much more than just a place to camp, is a place to get in touch with the roots of the Great Plains, and I very much look forward to returning.

If you are looking for a private spot with a beautiful view, this is it! Perched on top of the hills above the Niobrara River, you can enjoy the views of the canyons and trees and the sound of a variety of birds. Vicki met us and showed us the way to our site on a low maintenance but level road that was easy for us to manipulate with our RV, and far enough off the main highway that we didn’t hear the traffic! She gave us some bison jerky as a welcoming gift, and then we enjoyed a sunset bison tour of their herd that included cows with their calves and big bulls! The kids enjoyed feeding them large pellets as they gathered around the vehicle. Vicki’s husband joined us from his work on the ranch that is homesteaded by his family. His knowledge of the grasslands and bison was very interesting! We booked this tour in addition to some firewood for the large fire pit. We were excited that there had been enough rains so that we were able to have a fire both nights. I was traveling with my 15 and 17 year old grandchildren and they loved the site! Our main purpose in traveling to the Niobrara area was to tube the river. Vicki gave us some recommendations for renting tubes and we chose Dryland Aquatics which was located in Sparks, only a few miles down the highway. We spent two nights here and upon our departure, Vicki and Carl gifted us a pound of bison burger to cook up when we got home! I would definitely choose this site again for the solitude, beautiful views, and gracious hosts!

Spectacular scenic overlook
Carl met us at the road and let us back to the campsite where the view is breathtaking your campsite is up on the plateau overlooking the Niobrara river valley and the sand plains beyond.
The next day, Vicki, let us on a trek through the prairie in her Ford Excursion to find the buffalo. It took a while, but we did find them. It’s a very impressive herd with calves calves in a few giant bulls. It was a great experience. They come right up to the window for a snack.
This is absolutely a great place. I would definitely recommend it.

Beautiful setting adjacent to a beaver pond. Very remote, but only a few hundred yards from the highway.
