My fiancée and I tent camped at Red Lantern. What a beautiful, serene property! Cleared trails for walking through meadows of ferns and wildflowers; large, spacious and clean campsite; birds galore (including turkeys, green herons, and hummingbirds, which visited the red lantern thinking it was a hummingbird feeder- so cool!); well situated near area attractions including Sleeping Bear Dunes, Hilltop Coffee and Ice Cream (best in Northern MI), the Platte River, a beautiful paved bike path, and lots of quaint small towns with all their charm; and Margaret, the host. What an absolute gem of a person. Walked over to welcome us our first morning there, supplies firewood to start you off, maintains a lovely and clean outhouse and property, responds quickly. Had some raucous campers next to us and she apologized profusely and addressed the issue.
Things outside of her control: neighbors with barking dogs, one of which was clearly a livestock dog protection his herd from coyotes and other predators. And a rooster. We are light sleepers, so if you are also, and in a tent, plan accordingly!
Would highly recommend to quiet folks who want a peaceful getaway. Please respect Margaret and her property- she deserves it!!
This place is an absolute gem! We had such a peaceful and relaxing stay. We stayed in the green lantern. Very open site that was quiet, private, and beautifully maintained, with big open skies that were perfect for stargazing at night. Margaret was a wonderful and pleasant host; we were greeted upon arrival and she gave us some great information on kayaking spots away from the crowd. If you’re looking to be out of the main stream, this is a fantastic choice—I will definitely be staying again in the future!

My boyfriend and I loved our campsite! It was spacious and easy to have everything we needed put out. The only thing is you’d need to find accommodations for showering, which was the only downside. Otherwise it was a great place to stay and Margaret was wonderful!
Blue lantern site was amazing. It was a nice tucked away spot with great views of the night sky and a friendly environment. Would recommend.
It was beautiful, spacious, with a nice outhouse and water tank. really helpful host and overall lovely. we enjoyed picking blackberries and exploring the property!
Wonderful campsite! I’d love to stay here again! Clean space, lovely trails, near an open field (but site in the trees), clean outhouse.
Quiet, well spaced campsites. Very nice setting. I saw Margaret, but she saw I was on the phone (which mean the wifi was good) and graceously just waved.
Went here with my two friends to tent camp for the first time. Got there late at night in complete darkness, but the campsite was still easy to find and directions were very clear. There were no other campers while we stayed, but the other camp sites weren’t too close whatsoever, making it feel like we were in our own little secluded space. The trails into the woods nearby were very pretty, maintained, and easy to navigate. I didn’t use the outhouse but it was clean and stocked, as well as firewood already cut and wrapped in a tarp to keep it dry. A lot of care goes into this place and I’m sad I didn’t stay another night to explore it further! Very friendly to beginning campers, Im definitely going to visit again!

Our stay at the Gypsy Hill was absolutely amazing. The camping experience was delightful. I actually forgot to get black pepper and salt, and Margret was so kind to share hers with us. The trail is amazing and the weather was perfect. It’s close to Traverse City, Glenn Arbor, Leland and so many other cities. 100% recommend camping at Gypsy Hill
Margaret's camp sites at Gypsy Hill were lovely. Her property is cute, clean and has a lovely wandering trail with lots of blackberries. Close to many activities including the Platte River Park, it was quiet both during the day and at night and Margaret is the sweetest sharings lots of recommendations.

Nice sites, thoughtfully laid out. Felt private even when others pulled in. Firewood was nice! Other than some butts on the ground, and the neighbors barking dogs, everything was good. Outhouse was clean and nice. Margaret was pleasant when she stopped by. Nice place, especially if they work out the dogs next door that bark a lot late at night.

Cute, quiet sites and very conveniently located if you don’t want the ruckus of a state park campground. I feel like it goes without saying because this is Michigan in the summertime, but bring your bug spray!!! The deer flies and mosquitos were ferocious!!!

Forest and meadow land with walking trails. The mosquitoes were in the forest part. Bathroom was stocked and clean and convenient to campsites. The was also a little library stand. The location is convenient to sites around NW Michigan.

Margaret was a great host. The directions were easy to follow and we enjoyed our site. Having free firewood was a bonus and the outhouse was so cute!! If we are in the area again, I would definitely stay there!

Nice setting and very peaceful. Well spaced sites with an immaculate outhouse. I know, those words don’t really sound right together, but it’s true. Weather shortened my stay but looks like there are trails to explore with more time. Will definitely book there again.
We love this spot , the location is very convenient from the well to get water or the little stores if you need anything last minute,
Great little campground - all the sites are nice and spaced out. Margaret is awesome and super helpful. Recreation.gov lost my reservation for the weekend at Sleeping Bear and I was able to talk to Margaret and had a new site at Purple that saved the weekend in an hour. She also provides a night of firewood, an outhouse (with a little library😀) and non potable water. The only thing I missed was a grate for the fire ring.

The spot was very peaceful and relaxed. The other campers were very friendly too.
This place is a gem. My 2 year old had a blast running around the trails, Had a nice woodsy shady spot. We heard an owl while falling asleep and saw one raccoon late at night by the camp fire, he was spooked by our head lamp. The birds were singing in the morning time, it was very lovely definitely would come back.

Purple Lantern
We had an excellent stay at the Purple Lantern site. The campsite was private, quiet, and beautifully maintained. It offered plenty of space to relax and enjoy nature while still being conveniently located near Sleeping Bear Dunes and other local attractions.
The site was clean, the amenities were exactly as described, and the host clearly takes pride in providing a great camping experience. We especially appreciated the peaceful setting, abundant wildlife, and dark skies for stargazing.
If you’re looking for a relaxing Northern Michigan camping getaway away from crowded campgrounds, the Purple Lantern site is a fantastic choice. We would definitely stay here again! ⛺🌲🔥

Nice site with potable water access, an outhouse and a portapotty. Our site which was tent only was nice and secluded!
Margaret’s spot at Green Lantern was perfect. Lots of firewood a very clean port-a-potty. Easy to find. Highly recommend.
I had such a wonderful two night stay at Gypsy Hill. Firewood was provided and we had the coziest little set up right under the trees. Skies were so clear and perfect for stargazing. Purple lantern was just what we needed. Thank you for the hospitality on your land!

Quiet setting on the edge of the field. The stars and moon were beautiful. Site was neat and tidy. I would certainly stay here again.
My boyfriend and I stopped for one night to car-camp while passing through. It was perfect! Directions were easy to follow, even in the dark. While we didn’t stay long, the site was well kept and quiet, just what we needed. We arrived late but the host greeted us in the morning and was very friendly! We definitely recommend Margaret’s place.
Margaret’s land is beautiful! We had a very nice stay. The trails were well marked, the outhouse was clean, and the campsite well maintained. It’s secluded but was also easy to get to things if something was forgotten. There are other camp sites nearby, but it still felt private for us. The fire pit was such a nice touch. We were grateful for the firewood provided. Even with some rain, we had a great stay and would recommend or rebook this Hipcamp!
