Just south of its older brother, this land spans Utah, Wyoming, and Idaho, and is a crucial spot for supporting caribou populations. None of the animals here are bashful: bison, moose, deer, mountain lions, falcons, elk, and even black bears abound! Beautiful to snap shot from a distance. Just south of the forest, Bear Lake is a fun spot to take a dip after you hike one of Caribou’s dozens of peaks (Mead Peak and Hawks Peak have gorgeous views, as does Big Elk Mountain at the northern tip of the park). At the south end, you’ll find campgrounds, fast flowing creeks, and the Minnetonka Cave at St. Charles Canyon. This is a site to see, but it stays 40 degrees down there all year so be sure to pack a coat, even if you’re sweating above ground. When you’re done, stop in the charming small town of Montpelier, surrounded by rolling hills and full of retro grocers and kitschy eateries. Yum!

You can hear the coyotes off in the distance chipping and howling. My kids love to ride their ATV on the trails and we go for hikes and just relax. There is one fire pit for use at each camp spot (2 spots), just please go into the trees and find some wood to re-stack what you have used and ensure it is out with water and dirt. I fight wildfires during the summer and don’t want to have to fight one up there. Plus I may be hard to reach depending on where I’m located. Learn more about this land: Our Bear Lake Bascamp is perfect for boondocking or pitch a tent and camp in our 5 acres meadow or find a small shady spot in the 5 acres of  quakies and pine trees!  Off grid camping! OHV trails (ride from camp), bring your mountain bikes or even just go for a hike. Located at the edge of the Caribou-Targhe National Forest, Montpelier Ranger District, Idaho. The sunrises are amazing and in the evening you can listen to the coyotes off in the distance. It is open in the winter for snowshoeing or snowmobiling in with wood ready for the fire pit!  Recommend, that when you first arrive, build a small fire in the fire pit and the smoke will get rid of any of the bugs around.  We get up there about 1 time a month and mow/trim the path, parking and work on the trails in the pines.   Turn left at the smile face....When you see it, you'll know what I mean ;)  Please be respectful of others who have property in the area as well.  Don't climb over anyone's fences.

We were here two years ago and made a point to come back. Nice location for going off road in a jeep or 4-wheeler. Restaurant menu was limited but what they had was very good. The bartender, Edmund, was efficient, polite and nice to chat with. We will be back when we pass through again.

We stayed next to the snake river, which was absolutely amazing. These are swift waters so definitely beware. Everything was absolutely lovely at this venue for our one night stay at our camper van. Fire pits and grills are easily accessible and ready to go. The space was clean and well kept. You can hear the road nearby was probably the only noticeable thing that we would consider next time however we would come back to this location for sure

This was an Awesome spot!!! Big fire pit with tons of wood and kindling. It's Right next to the river with such a beautiful view. The camp spot well maintained and kept up with. Tons of room for trailer or tents. The portable toilet was clean and in good working order. Lastly, The Host was kind when checking in on us. We will definitely be back and recommend this place. 10/10.

We had such a stellar time in Wyoming at the Funny Farm. Nice grass field with plenty of room. Very nice touch that the host provides firewood! Communication was top notch before we arrived, and the conversation while we were there was even better. Highly recommend. We will stay here again for sure!

We had a wonderful time staying here. It was a quiet and restful two night stay. We enjoyed hanging in our hammocks by the bubbling stream, and watching the horses grazing nearby. Thank you for the beautiful environment.

What a location !! The place is excellent and Mike makes you feel at home, he goes out of his way to help you and makes you feels welcome Excellent bed in our tent and very clean. Being next to the snake river is a unique experience. Very clean and very good bed. We stayed in a canvas tent.

Weekend Trip to Star Gaze campground

I was able to locate the place easily with my GPS, there is an address posted at the site and the directions provided were clear. I was met upon arrival and offered my choice of locations. I was able to stay right next to the river, there were chairs and benches available along with a very large fire pit. It was quiet and I was able to enjoy sitting by the river. There were some very good suggestions of places to go check out near by, which I did, and they were great.

What a wonderful stay!! The hosts were so kind and welcoming, even going so far as to help us out with setup. They responded to questions quickly, gave us extra firewood when requested (hand split!!), and the porta potty was the cleanest one I’ve ever seen. The stream alongside the campsite was a wonderful touch and added in some great background noise!
