We are cautiously dog-friendly. Our farm dogs patrol the property to protect our free-roaming animals, so visiting dogs must be well-behaved, leashed, and comfortable around other animals. If you're unsure about compatibility, please reach out for advice. Our dogs will come to your camp to "check you out". If your dog has a problem with other dogs that are new to them you must let us know so we can control our dogs. We have had people come with problem dogs and not tell us so, we are asking for a $1 extra that we now require as a pet fee.

Located in the rolling Appalachian hills of Southeast Ohio. This farm has been in our family since 1869 when our relatives settled here from Germany. Originally farmed for cattle and sheep with many orchards over the years our property is now mostly mature forest. Southeast Ohio, including our property is known for its hilly topography and microclimates. Hills range from 400 to 1,100 feet.
Nearly 500 acres of land with an additional 200+ acres of Wayne National Forest adjacent to our farm and close proximity to other Wayne areas for outdoor activities. We have nearly 10 miles of available trails for hiking. Many activities can be done at or centered around our property. Such as excellent and challenging road biking, mountain biking, horseback riding, hiking, fishing, kayaking and boating. We are two miles from the Little Muskingum River. A great river for kayak trips. The Wayne Kinderhook horse and hiking trail is roughly 5 miles from our location. Hike the Irish Run Natural Land bridge trail also a short drive to the trailhead from our property. Ride your motorcycle up Rt. 26 a great Ohio byway for scenic driving. This is also a great home base for dual sport or adventure bike motorcycle riders to camp while adventuring along gravel roads through Appalachia. If motorcycles aren't your method of entertainment and travel. Bring your horse and ride on several of our trails.
From steep ascents to long flat ridge lines, you will have lots of time to immerse yourself with nature while hiking. We're next to a section of the Wayne National Forest and a short drive to other similar Wayne activity sites. If you like to camp, but don't want the busy public park experience then you will enjoy the privacy of our camping location.
We are also only about a 20-minute drive to downtown Marietta. Where you can find restaurants, bars, and many other fun activities.

Property was owned by my great grandfather , He lost 150 acres in the early 1900's due to a bad debt from neighboring landowner. Was so happy to be able to repurchase the 150 acres back in 2016,now own the original land tract and added more. 250 acres in total. Portions were strip mined around 1978-1982 creating some flat fields and access to all property. I might add that strip mining if done properly can and does enhance the property. Ponds were built to catch runoff and several new animal species moved in waterfowl ,muskrats, and beavers. The beavers have constructed large dams on property further adding to the beauty. Camping a mile from Sutton Lake Dam in West Virginia. Our campground serves as the perfect retreat. A place to unwind, with minimal to no traffic. Off a backroad, with a few creeks to cross driving up. You are really out in nature. Our property offers lots of places to hike, although in the heart of summer, it can get a little overgrown (Plus critters, yikes!) The creek that runs up the Holler is the perfect place to explore. Low enough to tromp around and catch some minnows.

There is always a friendly animal to visit with. Please make sure you are respectful to our home and animals.
Keep in mind, the creek can run high in bad weather, so I recommend an all wheel drive car, or with high clearance. That being said, small cars will get through when the creek is down.

Just an hour's drive from Charleston, WV - via the road less traveled! Each riverside campsite is approximately one-third of an acre and shaded by mature trees. This rugged beauty is nestled along the Elk River in northern Kanawha County, passing both full-time residents and seasonal campsites. Come pitch a tent or hang a hammock in our meadow, adjacent to the river!

A lightly traveled dirt road runs through the property. Since the road is showing its age lately, an SUV or 4x4 vehicle is recommended, although regular cars can get to the parking area. Please note that campers and ATVs are not permitted. Our property is a great destination for outdoor enthusiasts, but we don't have enough parking space to accommodate ATVs.
During your stay, you'll have foot access to the river. Feel free to bring your fishing gear, kayaks, bicycles, and other outdoor equipment. If you have any questions or special requests, please reach out—we'll do our best to accommodate your needs.
The nearest town is Clendenin, where you'll find gas stations, restaurants, a grocery store, and access to the Elk River Trail. Nearby attractions include Rail Explorers, Carol's Crossroads Restaurant in Maysel, and the Dundon Trailhead - with Gift Shop - in Clay, operated by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. Several DNR river access sites are also nearby, including Queen Shoals and King Shoals.
We want to be there to meet you, but if we're not, you should be able to find your site with the directions we provide. Open April - October.

Very peaceful and relaxing place to camp. My sister in law and her husband rented the camper and we rented the RV spot for our camper which worked out great for us to be together camping with plenty of space for everyone. The camper rental has everything a person would need and then some, including AC which was a must when we were there with temps in the 80s. Trail’s right off the campsite and the minimally used road were convenient for walking. The fields full of butterflies were lovely to watch all the species during the day and fireflies at night along with the stars. We are looking forward to returning again. It is private with great amenities like the Toliet and shower. J. R. Was very responsive to my questions and hospitable.
For those who go with an RV there is a free dumping station at the West Virginia welcome center which is only a mile and half from the Marietta exit on 77.

Our RV full hook-up site was fairly level with only minor side-to-side and front-to-back leveling needed. Our site was maybe 30 feet from the river - great background noise to enjoy an evening around the firepit, although didn't see any trout. Be aware, the locals cruise the streets and off road trails on noisy quads. This absolutely stopped after dark. As for nearby activities: definitely drive to Helvetia, park and walk the town. If you can visit before the end of June 2026 drop by the authentic swiss store/post office - they are closing the doors at the end of June. Definelty book a reservation at The Hutte for early dinner (they close at 6PM) for traditional swiss/German cuisine. Walk through the restaurant- it's like a local historic museum. Everybody is super friendly so remember to wave. Take it easy on the roads with your rig - they are very winding and hilly.

Lizzie’s Retreat was a fantastic camp spot. Communication with J was top notch. Directions were clear and the spot was easy to find. You can tell this was a very well thought out hipcamp. Everything you could ever need was there. Grounds were well kept and facilities were clean. We enjoyed the peaceful location and hundreds of birds and butterflies. I would definitely recommend this spot to anyone looking for a peaceful stay.

What a killer spot. Lizzies RV Retreat is peaceful, remote, and just about perfect. The dark skies are unreal for stargazing, and the camping area has everything you could want. Fire pit, composting toilet, elevated deck for tent campers, cooking tools, and even a 50 amp hookup for those of us who like a little juice in the trailer.
The property backs right up to Wayne National Forest with trails leading straight out from camp. There are vernal pools to check out and plenty of wildlife. Coyotes howling, owls hooting, and total quiet otherwise. You’re only about 15 minutes from Marietta too, where you can grab a drink and some great food at Black Diamond Distillery or hit up the local shops downtown.
Jay was an awesome host. Super friendly, stopped by to chat, shared some cool history about the land, and showed us his on site camper that he remodeled from top to bottom. It looks fantastic and is available to rent.
Jay rides too, so for the motorcyclists out there, this spot is perfect for motorcycle camping. Routes like 26 and 800 are nearby and make for some great rides.
Highly recommend. Can’t wait to go back.

Really great little site. Lots of fun touches that we don’t see often at Hipcamp spots- a nice campfire spot, a picnic table, paw paws (yum!), privacy… and the toilet!! So clean and didn’t smell like anything but the wood the outhouse was built with. That was amazing, honestly. We used a long extension cord and plugged our camper in at the back part of the site, off the road. Worked beautifully. Plenty of sun for our solar panels for boondocking, if we had brought them. Will definitely star this spot!

Our stay at Lizzies RV Boondocking Site was perfect. We enjoyed the stunning property & the super quiet location. The signage for the spot was also super helpful upon arrival. We would love to return to this property in the future! Thank you, J!

Czar Haus campground was very nice, quite, peaceful. The site was well done. Robert was there to make sure we were all good and did not need anything. The small creek is so nice we let our dog splash and play. If I am in the area I would book it again. Robert knew what he was doing when he laid the sites out. We saw Deer every morning and evening. If you are looking for a real West Virgina quite spot it's here.

This location was awesome! Quiet and beautiful, with trails that connect to the nearby forest, and no cell service! Perfect for disconnecting for a few days.
Marietta, Ohio is just a few minutes away with shopping, dining, fishing, kayaking - so much to do and see there.
J.R.'s property is huge, with lots of hiking opportunities.
The fire pit has a bench seat that was perfect for cozying up when we got back to camp. Also, it was nice to have the composting toilet - it kept us from having to find a dump station on our way home to empty the RV tanks.
We saw deer, turkey, owls, woodpeckers, hummingbirds, and SO MANY FIREFLIES!! The meadows matched the evening sky - it was awesome.
J.R.'s father met us as we arrived and, let me tell you, that man is a gem! Through our conversation, we realized that he (at one time) not only worked in my hometown, but in Shannon's hometown, too! It's a small world.
The amenities were just as described in the listing, with a steady power supply, picnic table, BBQ grill, fire pit, composting toilet, and a nice platform for tent camping.
J.R. even gave us great recommendations for day trips (I even caught some fish!).
Overall, a great escape from the rat race. We'll be back!

A clean, safe, accessible campsite perfect for those with a pop up tent on a suv. (Bronco sport). Or regular tent. Very quiet and peaceful, great spot as a midway point or for exploring nearby Marietta OH. Couldn’t be more pleased. Having a SUV I think is preferable for navigating the roads.
The only down side is no internet or cell service so make sure to make arrangements and get everything done before hand. Literally a 7 min drive to a Walmart if you desperately need internet. I actually enjoyed knowing that I can’t be bothered. Overall 10/10 experience.

When I’m looking for a Hipcamp, I want one that has one site because we enjoy the solitude. Even though this Hipcamp has several sites you would never know it. We did not see any other camps or campers during our two nights stay. When we turned onto the road, I knew that we had made the right choice! Big woods and open fields with plenty of wildlife. We saw turkey, deer,, butterflies & birds. We heard coyotes, tree frogs & owls. The hiking trails felt as though you had entered a magical Forest, huge majestic trees were overhead and the forest floor was lush with ferns. (J. gave us detailed, hiking directions & we enjoyed a 4 mile hike with our two pups.) The camp site was big with paths through a field of milkweed & wildflowers that had beautiful butterflies dancing in the wind 🦋 it provided access to the picnic area with a charcoal grill, a compost outhouse and a fire ring. If you are tent camping, the wooden platform is the perfect place to set your tent on. The luxury of electric was a bonus as was the new, clean compost outhouse. The site to setup your R.V. Is close to a gravel road but there were only a handful of jeeps & side by side’s that drove by. We slept soundly for 11 hours both nights! The new cabins look amazing too. J. was just a text away when we couldn’t figure out the electrical connection. (Breaker was shut off) speaking of texting, my cell phone had connection by the picnic table. The site was perfect; it was secluded with easy access and a great view of the night sky. Our van is set up for 30 amp hookup, but the site is designed for 50 amp. The host was kind enough to divert from an ice cream run with the family to make a trip to Walmart and grab the converter cable. It was a wonderful night in a stunning location!

We just got back from the most peaceful stay at Czar House. We felt so fortunate to have the place to ourselves to just relax and unwind. The river is the best kind of loud. The deer visited every evening. Robert was super prompt in communicating when I had a couple questions. We were shocked at how reliable the wifi was on site! Full hookups are always a plus. Great stay all around! This place is pretty remote, which is exactly what we were looking for.
