Welcome to Our Homestead Campground! Our secluded 80-acre farm is nestled in a valley between three mountains, where two babbling creeks meet—over two miles from the nearest residence. We raise chickens, ducks, and pigs while practicing permaculture and organic farming, using solar energy for parts of our operation. While an SUV or 4x4 is recommended, regular cars can access the site, and we have parking for standard vehicles. Please check with us in advance if you plan to bring an RV. Our farm is a great destination for overland camping—perfect for getting your truck a little dirty! We are cautiously dog-friendly. Our farm dogs patrol the property to protect our free-roaming animals, so visiting dogs must be well-behaved, leashed, and comfortable around other animals. If you're unsure about compatibility, please reach out for advice. Our dogs will come to your camp to "check you out". If your dog has a problem with other dogs that are new to them you must let us know so we can control our dogs. We have had people come with problem dogs and not tell us so, we are asking for a $1 extra that we now require as a pet fee. While you're here, visit our local businesses in Gassaway. This area was known by the Native Americans as "Pocatalico" (land of the fat doe), and first settled by Europeans around 1890. The property itself was first settled by a man named Mayford Jones, who set the first stones here around 1910. A Jenny Lynn style farmhouse was built and the property was known as one of the best developed farms in the area. Today, the forest has returned to what was once pasture land on the majority of the 100 acre plot, and a small but intensive sustainable forest farm has been taking shape since 2013 under the current host and occupant, who prefers the term "steward" rather than "owner".

Here you’re only a short drive from the New River Gorge National Park where you can go whitewater rafting or take a hike and experience the stunning beauty of the gorge, swim or paddleboard in Summersville Lake or go rock climbing on one of around 150 routes on the crags of the lake. In addition, you’ll be within walking distance of the Gauley River with all it’s wild untamed beauty where you can kayak, swim, fish, paddleboard, or splash in a waterfall. Not to mention being on a sheep farm, you can have the opportunity to learn about wool and wool processing. You can even learn how to felt wool and take home your creation! The Tawney Farm is a small-scale wool sheep farm adjacent to the beautiful Gauley River National Recreation Area and just a short drive to the New River Gorge National Park. Our farm lies nestled in between two beautiful mountains, one of them named Panther Mountain, in the Gauley River gorge. Here we raise Merino and Jacob sheep. Our farm is also home to a miniature horse and chickens. In addition to the NRG and Summersville Lake and Dam, also close by are Carnifex Ferry Battleground State Park where you can see where a crucial civil war battle took place, as well as Babcock State Park with its iconic grist mill and waterfall. We provide 7 sites on our farm for every camping style, from dry RV to tent, each with a table, fire pit and grill. All sites are spaciously separate from one another for privacy and perfect for couples who want to get away from it all, or for families or groups of friends who want to reconnect and catch up. Clean portajohns are provided as well as a common area with a dishwashing station and a "to die for" outdoor hot water shower (above-freezing temperatures permitting)!

Highly recommend! This cabin is perfect. Not only is it beautiful, but it is clean and fully stocked with anything you might need. The wood burning stove keeps it incredibly warm and cozy in the winter. The property surrounding the cabin is beyond beautiful! There are hiking trails and a stream that can be heard from the cabin's porch. The site is very private and quiet. I also can't say enough good things about the host Craig! Incredibly nice, quick to respond, and willing to whatever to make your trip perfect. I can't wait to go back!!!

Fantastic! Despite some of the drawbacks others have noted, my now fiance and I had a great time! I booked this cabin because of the incredible privacy, and mainly to propose in Hocking Hills! (She said yes 😎) Craig was a very nice host and made sure the cabin was well stocked. Despite no running water it had everything you could think to need, and overall you can tell the cabin was built with safety/comfort in mind. We will definitely be staying here again! Thanks Craig!

Coon Creek Cove is a wonderful place to get away and recharge out in some nature. The space is very nice for a small camper like our teardrop or a tent. I wouldn’t bring any kind of large RV as the road getting into their valley is very tight with several switchbacks. Nick is an incredible host who showed us right to our site, checked up on us and always asked if we needed anything. The space is well maintained and quiet. We thoroughly enjoyed hearing the rooster crow at all hours of the day.

Craig’s Cabin was awesome, it is a bit of a hike in but to be only 5 minutes from a shore and 12 minutes from town while being surrounded completely by nature with no neighbors to mind is wonderful. If you want nature with peace and quite Craig has done an amazing job! The cabin is comfortable and cozy with plenty of room, everything you need and nothing you don’t. Last but not least… Holy crap Craig is amazing! Friendly, responsive, helpful, and a very down to earth host that makes you feel welcome!

We had a wonderful stay with a group of 9 friends! The farm is quiet, secluded, and so peaceful! It’s walking distance to the Gauley, and one of our days we spent floating in the river as the season hasn’t begun yet. The facilities were really clean, especially for portable toilets. Overall would highly recommend!!

We had a great stay at the treehouse. Rob, the host welcomed us and made sure we had everything we needed. Our bed was comfortable and the toilet/shower area was within feet. We enjoyed spending time in the hammocks beneath the treehouse and the artisian drinking water provided was most refreshing. The property is very peaceful and we enjoyed the walk through the woods to the waterfall area. The dogs and cats on staff were spot on as well. We would definitely return and highly reccommend.

VERY nice area for those who prefer primitive! We LOVED our stay and will definitely be back. Great hosts, great property, great time! Just be warned, the drive to the property is not for the faint of heart-we were in a 4x4, it was fine. Our friends took a 4 door car, it wasn’t so pleasant for the car lol

This was a great space and the host was super nice. They've put a lot of thought into it. I'd definitely recommend it for a group of friends who all want to tent camp. The only thing I would cautions is for RVs or trailers. The actual camp site is more than big enough to accommodate one, that's not a problem. But the road to get to it is a windy, hilly dirt road that is barely a lane wide, despite having two way traffic. We had a relatively small travel trailer pulled behind a 4Runner and it was still very sketchy trying to navigate it to the camp site. There were a few times where we came around a corner and were almost hit by someone going way too fast for a road like that, and a couple of times that we almost fell off the road completely trying to get over far enough so someone could pass us. Maybe if you're a very experienced tower it wouldn't be an issue, but for us it was white knuckle the whole time. Just something to think about. But everything else about it was great!

Amazingly beautiful location! The waterfall and cove area was a short hike away from the main house, and is totally worth going to even when it's just a trickle. There are a lot of carpenter bees and wasps living in the treehouse, but no one got stung and we coexisted well. Just something to think about if you are afraid of flying, stinging insects. The shower in the bathhouse is great, and the camping toilet worked well enough. Rob is a great host! He was communicative and always answered our questions quickly. The farm dogs are friendly and adorable, but will rush your car to greet you which might be overwhelming to some dogs. Totally would recommend staying here overall.

We had the most peaceful stay here. The campsite is big and away from all the other sites. The port a John’s are very clean. The hosts are so friendly and fun to chat with. I love how off the grid the place is too. Was nice to be forced to be off our phones and just enjoy nature. While it was off the grid, it was still just a relatively short drive to state parks and several hiking trails. A definite place to stay for primitive camping.

We had such a great stay at this peaceful off-grid cabin in the woods. It was quiet, relaxing, and the perfect place to unplug. Our dog loved roaming around and exploring—definitely pet-friendly! Craig was a fantastic host and made sure we had all the info we needed before arrival. Just a heads-up: bring bug spray! We’re already planning our next trip back.
