Founder and Vintner, Monty Dixon, would tell you he’s been making adult beverages since he was nine years old. In his elementary school library there was a book that gave crude instructions on how to make beer at home. Monty’s precocious and daring nature led to adventures in backyard chemistry. It wasn’t until his teens and young adult years that he would graduate to casual wine-making. But casual wasn’t enough for Monty.
This is no vintner’s hobby house. Bar Z Winery combines art, science, and years of experience to create elegant wines. Monty’s passion and hard work go into every bottle making these entirely Texan wines contenders on the world stage. Bar Z Winery has competed against Napa Valley wines, French wines – often considered the greatest – yet their native Texan creations have taken home the gold.
Much like his wine, Monty Dixon is unfiltered, robust, and wholly unique. If he has a free moment, he’ll happily bend your ear about the science of wine and Bar Z’s simple, yet effective philosophy: Let the wine be wine. Bar Z Winery prides itself on utilizing the unique Texas terroir to create a wine that expresses the hard work of the vineyard owners, the soil it was grown in, and the love of Texas shared by those who enjoy these unique, award-winning wines.
We are available for check-in Monday through Wednesday 1:00 PM - 7:00 PM and Thursday through Sunday 1:00 PM - 9:00 PM. The Winery is closed at times not listed and the gate will be closed at that time. If you have a confirmed reservation, and you need to arrange for an after-hours arrival, please make sure to call the winery and speak with one of our staff at least an hour prior to closing to provide us with your ETA and get instructions for getting onto the property.

We are just getting started with this so you’ll be able to help us from the ground up. If we are not in a burn ban you’re welcome to have a campfire. There will be opportunities to call up a wild coyote or watch some mule deer or an occasional antelope stroll by. You could even be awakened by the horses on their way to water in the morning and we can set up some horse riding if we have enough notice to schedule time off from the 9-5 haha. Great host!! Perfect for our needs!! We needed somewhere to check in late on our way across country.
We checked in at 10p and Tyler & Ted met us outside and made sure we knew right where to go.
There’s no amenities as far as power, restrooms or water but Tyler made sure we knew where to make our last stop from either direction if we needed to. They also had farm related add ons like horse riding, fresh eggs and the like to add to your stay if you need them.
We are a fully self contained rig so it worked perfectly for us!! Will likely stay again on our way thru in the future!!

I loved my hipcamp experience here! To start, the host is quick to help with any questions or information. I was arriving late and received a response almost immediately with everything I would need. Ted, their dog, is awesome. We were told he'd help guide us when we got there and we kinda laughed, said aweee, and expected to see him bark from their house. No...this cutie led us all the way to where we needed to go--not kidding, he would LET US KNOW if we were going the wrong way by standing and barking in front of our car. Not only that, he would keep the same pace as us, make sure we were following along, and only left once we got out and pet him on the head. He was so perfect and honestly made the whole thing worth it. Besides that, their land is beautiful. The horses just graze alongside your car and the windmills are so close! We car camped which was perfect for the weather. A starry night , a beautiful sunrise, and some horse pets later, we were on our way! Quick easy perfect rest stop.

We stayed here one night with our RV and really liked it! 😊 The place felt safe and peaceful, and we slept great. The laundry was nice — not spotless, but the machines were good and it’s great that you can see the remaining time in the app. There’s also a gas station nearby, which is super convenient. The sunset was beautiful, and at night we could see lots of stars ✨ The only downside was a bit of an unpleasant smell in the evening, but overall a really good stay. Definitely recommend! 🚐🌅

Monty’s setting is terrific - beautiful views over a canyon, especially at sunset. A big area for campers. We were surprised to see over a dozen others there (but always delight in comparing the rigs!) And the winery, friendly service, and Rockin Music were fun! Dog friendly. Great hosts. Sweet spot.

Oh y’all, I wish I’d gotten to spend more time here! Who knew windmills make the gentlest, subtlest white noise? Did I have to dodge cowpats (the cows and horses kept a respectful distance) and stick to the gravel road for a dusk walk for fear of rattlesnakes? Sure, but it’s Texas!!!

I booked this hipcamp fairly last minute as a stop on a crosss country road trip! They were super communicative, the directions were easy to follow and it was fairly peaceful! They had no issue with the fact that I had to get in late and leave early. I would definitely stop here again.

Tent camping was great. He was very quick to respond so it made getting to the site really easy. We got to camp by some wind turbines which we thought was wicked but if it's not your thing, there's other places on the property. The cows and horses are real chill and the scenery was great. I'd totally camp there again.

This is the perfect location to stay leaving/returning from deep inside Texas. It’s a day drive to great places in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah…etc.
I stay here every time I go camping north of the panhandle.
It’s right off the highway, it’s convenient and quiet.
Tyler and his family are the type of people that optimize what you think of when you envision “the Texan Family”. They are kind, thoughtful and gracious beyond words. I always feel safe and welcomed whenever I stay there.
Now it is breezy and dispersed camping. You have to be an animal lover, because they have all kinds of different pony’s, horses and cattle. I am, and there is nothing like waking up to a beautiful Texas sunrise, drinking your coffee and petting a cute pony.
In short, I recommend with two thumbs up
