The rich history of Burnhead Grazings is enveloped in a love for God's creation. Dr. Gib and Emmy Lou McLaughlin purchased Burnhead, which is Gaelic for the head of the stream, from William H. Stevens. The once pasture for Hilltop Dairy's cows became a pasture for sheep. Gib and Emmy had been in search of land for years after getting their first border collie and falling in love with the Shepherd lifestyle. Gib trained dozens of border collies to work the sheep and did hundreds of demonstrations highlighting the herding abilities of the collie across the country. Their love for Scotland and the border collie took them Scotland on many occasions. Burnhead Grazings is a snapshot of Scotland, "in bye" or close to, the beautiful college town of Indiana, PA. Less than two miles from two hotels, three miles from downtown, and within minutes from Amish country, it is amazing that this respite still exists so close to civilization. Gib and Emmy's daughter, Moire McLaughlin Bridges and her husband Randy have endeavored to bring the sheep back to Burnhead Grazings and to continue the family tradition as well as to share in the experience. You can listen to an interview on The Christian Witness Program on this page for some history about Moire and Randy in Tennessee where they were residing before coming to Indiana. They are producing lamb, wool for spinning and felting, and hay and are opening up the farm for small events such as weddings or family reunions. Moire is also the author and illustrator of a children's book available for sale on iBooks called Sissy & The King. In November of 2014, with the help of Hilltop Baptist Church and many others, they began hosting an event, LIFE Nativity, the weekend before Thanksgiving, which benefits Life-Way Pregnancy Center. Moire is also a fine artist and gives classes on wool felting. Ask about signing up for a class or book a private felting party.

Camp is on 50 acres with a pink marked trail to Red Bank Creek on the western border and back up through a hemlock forest along south border. A small stream runs through the property and forms a rocky delta in Red Bank Creek. All camp sites are on the eastern border and close to the main road to access property. Hike, enjoy the sound of the stream tickling through property, stargaze, or rest, watch nature's critters, read or just relax in a hammock. No hunting on property but fishing permitted along "river" aka Red Bank Creek. Please keep fires in firepit and noise levels low. Set up to be most natural, minimal mowing, and sites meant to be more private. We let you know if you have others on property. We are very close to the Aughwick creek where there is kayaking and fishing. There are many trails in Huntingdon County. We are about 45 mins away from Lake Raystown dam where there is boating and camping and trails. The 1000 steps is a popular hiking trail. We have a recently remodeled farmhouse for short term rentals. There is a spot for a motor home that would have electric and water hookups.

Weekend Trip to Mountain View Camping

The a frame was super cute, kept us dry, and the the restroom set up was really convenient. The land is beautiful, with a little stream, mossy and lush. No complaints other than the aframe is not sealed like a tent would be, so there were a lot of bugs in there all night. Not just mosquitoes or flies but spiders, caterpillars, slugs, ect. There is a really nice mattress in there, but its a single so it makes the set up much better suited to one person. Although he did provide a pretty nice inflatable camp pad for the second person, just was not the comfiest or most roomy but thats to be expected and of no fault to the host. There is a bit of a walk down a trail from the parking area to the camping area. The host was kind and very communicative.

Weekend Trip to Urban Saddle Ranch

My husband, myself and our golden retriever, Nala, had a wonderfully relaxing kid free weekend. Monique was quick to respond to any questions and met was very friendly and kind when we met her face to face. Urban Saddle Ranch had comfortable and clean cabins, adorable animals, and was well maintained. We loved listening to the water feature in the pond and the bullfrogs at night. We will be back!

1 night at Freedom Run Ranch Equestrian Camp

As soon as we pulled in to freedom run Ranch we knew we would enjoy ourselves. The horses had a great place to stay with big grassy pens and stalls for nighttime in a big old Beautiful barn. The owners were very gracious and helped us with everything. The Cabin is super cute! There are nice places to sit outside in the shade. I would definitely recommend a stay here. Though we only stayed one night, on our trip through the area, we would definitely stay again.

3 nights at Star Lee Farm

We loved staying at the Star Lee Farm. The cabin was the perfect size for my husband and I. There was enough firewood for us to have a fire all day the one day and a few shorter ones as we needed other days. The walk to the outhouse was short and the views for that area to the surrounding mountains and trees was beautiful. The cabin was remote, we could see the other one through the trees if we tried but no one was staying there. They checked in via message a few times to make sure we didn’t need anything and restocked the bathhouse halfway through our stay. We were just a short drive from hiking at a state park which was great.

We had a lovely time and would love to return. We stopped one night on the way and one night on the way home to break up our longer journey to western PA on our motorcycles. Directions and information were accurate and helpful. The family is very helpful at check in and with answering any other questions. It's an absolute oasis in the woods with a beautiful view of the valley. It's a great way to feel unplugged and relaxed while having all creatures comforts (hot shower, kitchen/grill, very comfy bed). After our first night's stay, we even made a point to get back early for our second night's stay to enjoy grilling, reading on the porch and relaxing listening to old records. My husband was inspired by all of the thoughtful, skillful wood working in the cabin. It's wonderful that this family are stewards of both the land and also the history of the property as they took the time to rehab the old cabin on the property. Highly recommend.

Richard is the best, most accommodating, communicative host. He went out of his way to get me what I needed. The site is as advertised, bring a good sleeping pad. I would go back in a heartbeat. He also has an RV if you need a mattress and on demand hot water. Definitely give Richard's site a stay!

Weekend Trip to Neal Homestead Camp Sites

This was the perfect little space to get away from life in the winter. The little propane heater was enough to warm up the space in the middle of the night and early morning. I didn't have the right gear to hike in the snow but I will be back to try out the trails in the spring! There was plenty of fire wood and a solo stove which we didn't really use but I appreciate that it was available. Also the hosts were very friendly and offered extra lights and things to make my stay more cozy. I will most definitely be back with better gear ❤️ Thank you again for making this quiet space available for people to get away from the busy world!

Kevin was super accommodating and the cabin was very clean and cozy with lots of little extras. The outside of the cabin had a picnic table and fire pit and was private. Cell service was good enough to stream a movie on netflix on our laptop too. We will definitely stay here on the property again.

Star Lee is a wonderful setting for a bucolic visit to Central PA. Close to Raystown Lake and other state lands it offers a nice stay for anyone to hike, bike, hunt, or fish in the area. Stargazing and daydreaming also included. As a working bee and hay farm, Star Lee offers the opportunity to settle in, relax and enjoy. It is clean, comfortable, and obviously well cared for. I highly recommend Star Lee and am still enjoying their honey. We’ll be back.

Weekend Trip to Star Lee Farm

We have stayed in a lot of hip camps, but this by far is one of the very best that we’ve stayed in. Some of the highlights: cozy cabin nicely decorated. No heat or electricity, but he had lanterns for us, but we brought our own. Nice outdoor area with a picnic table and a fire pit that was perfect. Also a gas grill for us to cook on. He is two other cabin places, but they are so far apart that you can’t really hear or see anyone else. The property is huge and it is a working bee farm and it was very cool. These are located nowhere near the cabin, so you never have to worry about the bees being near your cabin. Highly suggest you learn about raising bees from our host! He has delicious honey for sale and an awesome piece of property with lots of different birds and deer. we walked around his property the first day and went 1.7 miles so it is very large. Also, very nice that it is a close walk to the flushable toilets and hot water showers. This was also a huge plus for us in October. Kevin is very responsive. He is also retired military and very compassionate and energetic about his farm. We came up for the end of the road half marathon/4miler, but in addition to that there is much more in this area if you like the outdoors. We did not go to Raytown Lake / Alpaca farm which we will visit next time. We love to hike and within 15 minutes is beautiful hikes with awesome views in including the thousand steps and the standing stone trail. We highly recommend!!!

Who ever Mimi is, she’s got a nice shed! It is exactly what you would expect a shed in the woods to be. It is unfinished in the inside but comes with basic camping goods like stoves, some pans, fire pit, and some water. We luckily did bring our own lantern since the indoor lighting is not super bright. Nothing fancy, but a step up from a tent for sure! We arrived late at night which made finding the shed a little more difficult. I think a few little outdoor lights could help quite a bit! By the way, if you hear screaming through the woods close by, it’s just the goats.
