Such a great stay that we added an extra night! The perfect blend of on site amenities like a propane cook top and water to wash up, and time in nature. Enjoyed walking around the property and the sound of the creek all night. Will probably book another stay here in the fall, I'm sure it's beautiful.

Weekend Trip to Mountain Top Cabins

Lisa’s land was incredible. Cabin 1 is shared with the land’s caretaker, Doug, and Lisa when she is in town. There is a space for guests in the loft above the main living area that is very private and comfortable. The cabin is well equipped with everything you need to cook meals, a fully functioning bathroom, around 10 beds, and various board games and books. The views from the cabin are amazing. You are high above the surrounding mountains with views looking out for miles and miles. The sunrise is fully visible from the cabin either from your bed or the front porch with a cup of coffee in hand. Hike up to the big bald for the highest point on the property and an incredible view of the sunset. Lisa and Doug even cooked us delicious breakfasts each day with local goods! The hike up to the cabin is very manageable and well worth it. Plan for an hour or two depending on your pace! Our group had some pretty heavy packs but didn’t have any issues making it to the cabin.

Had a great time!!! The cabin was cozy and very welcoming. A nice cool breezes help keep the cabin nice and cool even when we had some warm days on our stay. The cow kept us company in the mornings and evenings, so friendly and sweet.

And their cow was an added bonus - unbothered and liked to join us when we were outside sometimes (: next time, I’d like to stay longer than a long weekend!

Weekend Trip to Mountain Top Cabins

We had an amazing trip to the Sandy Mush cabins over opening weekend! Our party of two was welcomed by hosts Doug and Lisa. The hike up was fun, and on a steep incline (took us about 2 hours) — it was beautiful and had plenty of places to rest, including a seating area under cover by the creek. The hosts were so gracious and welcomed us with anything we needed. Running water, fully stocked restrooms, kitten Lucy, and plenty of games and books too. We stayed in Cabin 2 (about 200 yards up from Main Cabin). We used our headlamps in the cabin after the sun went down, and brought one down blanket that we shared on the downstairs queen bed (linens provided). We enjoyed the propane stove and coffee / tea provided — the cabin was stocked with amenities for cooking, reading, and relaxing on the porch swing or by the cast-iron wood burning stove. The views were unbelievable! We enjoyed games and coffee on the porch overlooking the mountains, as well as a gorgeous hike up to the bald. The flowers everywhere were gorgeous. There are a few options for the walk up to the bald — one of which starts and ends right at Cabin 2. The sunrise was amazing on the morning of our hike down (took about half the time going down as our hike up). Lisa and Doug were both amazing hosts. They are friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful with anything and everything. They taught us about some of the history of the mountain and we really enjoyed the breakfast they cooked for us before we left in the morning

Weekend Trip to Mountain Creek Rest

I loved staying at the Diamondstone!! I am a returning guest on Brian’s property and my stay was amazing as always. The cabin was so lovely, cozy and well built. The site was very well maintained and peaceful. I love love love the creek that runs behind the cabin. It’s a natural white noise. Directions to the site were very clear and Brian was responsive and helpful. The check out instructions were clear too and Brian provided all supplies needed to keep the cabin clean for the next guest. I will definitely be back.

2 nights at Winding Stair Campground

This is our second stay here and as always we had a blast. River and farm is gorgeous. Bath house is very clean and I love their soap. All the animals are well cared for and on fresh grass. *Be aware that the River House building does have BLACK MOLD everywhere for those of you that are allergic.* it’s in every part of this building structure. If this is an issue, there are other sites and buildings that appeared to be mold free.

The small cabin was more charming and the surrounding land more beautiful than we imagined. This is a special place and I would highly recommend a stay. James was super friendly and provided anything we needed that was extra which included a guitar. Perfect!

We had a wonderful stay in the tiny house & would definitely recommend it. Peaceful area, really cute cats, & plenty of amenities (firepit, coffee, showers w/ towels & shampoo, etc). Despite the size, the rooms felt spacious & the heater worked well even with cold nights. Only downside was the WiFi did not work during our stay. We found out once we arrived that a storm took it out, so hopefully this is a short term issue.

After 2 months of being closed due to neighboring property landslides, our cabin is finally back open and the Asheville area is welcoming visitors!! Just so there's no surprises...On your way up to the cabin you will see broken asphalt in an area(you will have to go slow over the bumpy rough area) you will also see some mud piled up on the sides of the road from where we had some gracious volunteers clear a way up to the cabin! Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding as we navigate through these difficult times! The cabin at wild ridge is OFF GRID (meaning no power or running water) but I promise, with our solar panels and rain collection system you won't miss being ON the grid at all! The cabin and the drive (or hike) up was designed for the adventurous at heart! So, drive on up if you have 4WD or AWD and if you don't, no worries! Just park in the designated space, grab your gear and hike on up! (The hike in is steep... about 300 ft but takes less than 5 minutes) We have a cooler up there for any perishables you may have, just bring ice :) Please note: We have to close the outdoor heated shower during the cold winter months, however we provide an all season 5 gallon solar shower bag to use during this time. We also have a list at the cabin of other places nearby that provide hot showers in the winter months for a small fee. In the rare event that heavy snow is expected, we will have to close the road leading up to the cabin because of its steepness. If this occurs, you will be given a full refund for the cancellation. To heat the cabin, there is a un-vented wall mounted heater that heats the space really well! In 2015 he was joined by Sofi, originally from Sweden and together they have three daughters. Together they manage a botanically interesting hobby hill farm and are happy to host travelers and seekers in their cabins. Hilltop was a joint project that James built in 2012 with a talented woodworker and friend in 6 months of saturdays for less than $5k. We have maintained the original vibe of the place, rustic simplicity and elegance a notch or two above glamping, well-described by the zen koan, "chop wood, carry water" Orchard House was built entirely by James from the block up to the roof, averaging 1 hour/day for 3 years or 1,000 hours. Some of the Hilltop photos are a bit dated, we have a more private outhouse behind the cabin, and have made a few improvements here and there. Reach out anytime for any reason. We love hosting and nearly everyone enjoys their stay.

A hearty and healthy breakfast is served each morning in our Main Lodge and is included and you'll never pay a cleaning fee on this mountain because we believe in Southern hospitality! Our Main Lodge (Cabin #1) has a huge front porch with spectacular views, a nicely appointed off-grid kitchen, full bathroom with hot shower and an upstairs loft that sleeps up to 10. Our on-site host/s stay downstairs in the Main Lodge in private bedrooms so they can keep the home fires burning, tend the garden, cook breakfasts, clean the cabins and ensure all your needs are taken care of during your stay. Guests in our Upper Cabin (Cabin #2) enjoy a wooded and secluded setting in a rustic cabin that sleeps up to 6. The downstairs area features an open floorpan with a queen size bed, off-grid kitchen, dining area and the loft upstairs sleeps up to 4 people. Cabin #2 also features a full bathroom with and a tree-house like view from the front porch! Our cabin adjacent camp space features two spectacular campsites and is located 100’ from our Main Lodge. Camp 1 and Camp 2 both measure 12’x15’ and feature a soft grassy surface surrounded by natural boulder walls. Both campsites sit beside our neighboring property owned by the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy and feature a long-range mountain views. Guests at our campsites are welcomed to breakfast daily and have full access to the restroom facilities in the Main Lodge.

We have 4 safari tents; each with outdoor showers and sinks. This is an adult only campground with a community bath house, and grilling / coffee station. Our glamping campground was built by ecologists so with the exception of the bathhouse and outdoor kitchen area, there is minimal electricity.

We just retired from Active Duty Air Force! My ancestors have owned the land our NC cabins sit on since 1836. In fact, my mother grew up there after my Grandfather returned from WWII when there was no electricity and the outhouse was a bench over the creek. I grew up hiking the mountains with my brothers and our BB guns and my Uncle Frank at our family reunions. In 2005 he deeded us a parcel of land and we built our first cabin - Smawlie. We love to come to the cabin and Hike the trails on our own property, and of course, the world famous ones that join them, namely the Bartram and the Appalachian Trails. As you explore the lake, the trails, the rivers, and the mountain roads you'll see why our ancestors settled here. In 2018 - we bought the remainder of Uncle Frank's land - and in his honor built our second cabin - Frank's Landing. Also in that year I started managing my brother Bill's cabin. When we were stationed in Alaska for 6 heavenly years - we purchased a remote parcel of property and have slowly begun to develop it. We just completed building our cabin there.
