Just 35 miles south of the Adirondacks, this small city is a gateway to central New York. With lakes, marshes, and the Erie Canal, Utica is fascinating for urban adventurers and families alike.

The Erie Canal hasn't run directly through Utica for nearly a century. Today, the paved-over waterway is the 13.5-mile Canalway Trail. The flat terrain makes for easy biking. The trail passes the Utica Marsh Wildlife Management Area, a nice spot for nature walks and birding.

The Mohawk River is also here, offering a watery view of the shore's shuttered factories and wildlife. To launch, take your canoe to Harbor Road near Genesee Street in Utica. You can also hop aboard an Erie Canal tour boat, with options from group kayaks to house boats. The guides are a great source of Erie history and can explain finer points like the canal's antique locks.

Kayakers can pitch tent at Lock 20 in Marcy, NY. The facilities have bathrooms and water, but the first-come, first-serve camping is quite small, so try to arrive early.

This field has also been recently planted with Apples, Pear, American Plum, Red Osier Dogwood, Persimmon, Red Mulberry, Chinese Chestnut, and Hazelnuts. These are all young at this time but will start to provide diversity and wildlife interest in the coming years. Wildlife abounds here at the homestead. Whitetail Deer and Eastern Wild Turkey are very common to see. I am Karl and with my wife Danielle together we own 15 acres of peacefully settled forest on the edge of over 10,000 acres of State Forest land. It is on a seasonal road. I have no registered address, but a small sign marks my access road as Jacob Lane. This is a tribute to my friends. The Amish that helped me build our off-grid cabin. It is very quiet here, but we are an active homestead and work starts at 9am every day, we do our best to be considerate and ask the same from you. The forest rangers and DEC officers that patrol here keep a tight rein on the forest and its preservation. We have one guest cabin and several places a tent or RV can park. There are no hookups. Please bring some potable water. We do have spring water available but it's a drive. I first came here about 15 years ago. I would like to try and see if others would enjoy what we have made our lives. I do like to talk and although I don't lie, stretching the truth is an artform I have perfected so be prepared. There is a state-run beach and picnic area about 3 minute drive away on the Hinkley Reservoir. And a few other bodies of water to kayak and fish. We have Kayaks for use at an extra cost. We are about 15 to 20 minutes away from the Herkimer Diamond Mines. You can bike, hike, nature watch or just enjoy the peacefulness of the tree you chose to sit against. Down and ready firewood is everywhere if you want to bend over and pick it up. You can possess firearms on the property, but you may not discharge one without prior approval unless it's to save your life or that of another. There are places not far away that you can legally shoot and enjoy yourself. There are traditional outhouses on the property and for those that know how cat holing is allowed. Ask if unsure. No dumping tanks or portable toilets anywhere and that includes the outhouses. The state of New York has facilities at campgrounds that do a proper job with that type of waste. You can have input about what part you want to camp in, but there is a turtle safety zone; and we know where the quick sand is, and would rather you didn't sink out of sight! We have a hill top view or the serenity of a water fall site (as long as there isn't a drought) or the sweet smell of hemlock & pine! Shade & trees. Feel like you're in the Wild West with herds of horses, cows, goats ; wildlife visiting your campsite! We have a canoe w a small pond & bullhead fishing, wagon rides, pony rides, and eventually trails for horse back riding. Eventually we will install cabins with lean-tos to bring your own horse with you! If you have a dog? Ask if it is welcome, not all dogs are, due to safety issues with the livestock and birds. We can provide a barbeque pit, for cooking. Depending on the time of year there is fresh produce as well!   Why go thousands of miles to walk with the (almost!) mustangs !!! You can have the experience right here in NY!

I am Karl and with my wife Danielle together we own 15 acres of peacefully settled forest on the edge of over 10,000 acres of State Forest land. It is on a seasonal road. I have no registered address, but a small sign marks my access road as Jacob Lane. This is a tribute to my friends. The Amish that helped me build our off-grid cabin. It is very quiet here, but we are an active homestead and work starts at 9am every day, we do our best to be considerate and ask the same from you. The forest rangers and DEC officers that patrol here keep a tight rein on the forest and its preservation. We have one guest cabin and several places a tent or RV can park. There are no hookups. Please bring some potable water. We do have spring water available but it's a drive. I first came here about 15 years ago. I would like to try and see if others would enjoy what we have made our lives. I do like to talk and although I don't lie, stretching the truth is an artform I have perfected so be prepared. There is a state-run beach and picnic area about 3 minute drive away on the Hinkley Reservoir. And a few other bodies of water to kayak and fish. We have Kayaks for use at an extra cost. We are about 15 to 20 minutes away from the Herkimer Diamond Mines. You can bike, hike, nature watch or just enjoy the peacefulness of the tree you chose to sit against. Down and ready firewood is everywhere if you want to bend over and pick it up. You can possess firearms on the property, but you may not discharge one without prior approval unless it's to save your life or that of another. There are places not far away that you can legally shoot and enjoy yourself. There are traditional outhouses on the property and for those that know how cat holing is allowed. Ask if unsure. No dumping tanks or portable toilets anywhere and that includes the outhouses. The state of New York has facilities at campgrounds that do a proper job with that type of waste. I highly recommend visiting Lisa and Ed, genuinely good people who take great care to ensure that you'll be comfortable and have what you need to optimize your stay. They are extremely knowledgeable about pretty much anything to do with farm living, and the horses receive amazing care.Lisa and Ed can't hide how much they love them. As far as which site to pick I walked the entire grounds and whichever site you choose is a winner, comes down to personal preference. There's no place else that can match this experience. Lisa and Ed are very responsive and have suggestions on local things to do .The reviews, all positive are a bit like pictures, they can't tell the whole story. Get here yourself and enjoy this peaceful, serene beautiful place and have this unique experience, you'll be glad you did. Don't forget all of the other things you can do to add to your experience that Lisa lists. This would be an unforgettable experience for a family with young kids. Bring a camera! Aside from the residents, the fields are visited by deer, and there are foxes, birds. There's a cabin, 2 trundle beds,folding room divider, windows all around, small sitting area with an awning in back looking into the forest .Lisa and Ed are kind, considerate and caring hosts. * Ask about buying some amazing Maple Syrup made using Ed's grandfather's recipe. We stayed in a 26' trailer, and the hookups were excellent. If you have dogs with good recall, this is the perfect place. Being able to let them off leash was so appreciated. The lake was beautiful and crystal clear. Our dogs loved swimming, and we enjoyed paddle boarding. Next time we’ll come earlier in the season so we have more daylight to enjoy everything. This spot exactly as described. Very private but everything here and well laid out. The walk to the lake is a bit steep but 110% worth it if you like to fish or be by water. We caught at least a dozen largemouth bass, several 10-12 inches, a yellow perch and several large pumpkinseeds. RV Site is gravel and damn near perfectly level. Couldn’t ask for much better, appreciate Roberto and his family are willing to to share this very nice location, A+ Hipcamp!

Brook Hollow Homestead is the PERFECT spot for camping. The pond for fishing & swimming. The beautiful trees for swaying on your hammock. The marked trails for hiking. The open Fields for stargazing. Really, everything you want from an outdoor stay. Our host Todd was very accommodating, helpful, informative & friendly. It met all my current needs and I can see how it will provide a future desire to have my children & grandchildren camp with me with the cottage available for those that don't care to sleep outdoors. We had our hammock amidst all the beautiful trees swaying & leaves dancing above us. Best of all (for me) were the dark skies & open Fields. We were able to track, identify & photo-stack our favorite constellations. It was truly amazing & restorative to the soul.

Exactly as advertised! Christine and her husband have put their all into this campsite and you can tell! There were many thoughtful, small things that made life easier- cooking equipment, seasonings, shower body washes, shower caddy, warm blankets, flashlights, a fan, mini fridge, etc. You quite literally have everything you need! And the camp store was a beautiful addition to our store and gave you that nostalgic feeling of being a kid at camp. The camp store had everything we needed and more, we especially appreciated the energy drinks lol. The shower and bathroom were kept meticulously clean. The stars were beautiful at night and the solar lighting everywhere was helpful and awesome. The perfect place to unplug while not having to do too much work. Thank you so much!

Todd is an excellent host! Very friendly, and the campsite was exactly as described and perhaps even better. The trees are ideal for hammock camping, but plenty of clearings for tents too. A rake and shovel are provided to help clear the ground as needed, and the latrine, fire pit, and 5 gallon water jug really made camping a lot more comfortable. Overall an excellent choice for camping in the area, and I’m sure I’ll be back when I do this bike tour again in future years.

I stayed at the red pine forest tent site. When I arrived, Todd was VERY accommodating and welcoming and I was greeted by a couple groups of deer near the site. It was raining and Todd provided me dry firewood to get my campfire going. The campsite itself was very beautiful, private, and clean with only sounds of nature and wildlife throughout the night. I would return if ever in the area. Great spot to camp between Section 1 and 2 of the NEBDR for the motorcyclists out there.

Great peaceful stay in a rustic cabin. Karl was very friendly and greeted me even though it was quite late. It was a little hard to find the place in the dark because he doesn't have an exact address, but there is a traffic cone marked HipCamp at the end of their driveway that was very helpful. Nice clean space and kind attention to detail of showing me how things worked and making sure I was all set. Their cabin being close felt nice as a solo traveler, but I imagine couples looking for a romantic stay might hope for more distance from their main cabin. I was comforted by the sounds of their watchdog and the stars were beautiful. If you're sensitive to laundry detergents with fragrance I would bring your own blanket to block that from getting on your clothing from the sheets.

We loved the privacy. There is a road near the camp where we heard a lot of ATV's the first couple of days, but we didn't see anyone else the entire time. The lake is lovely. My dog absolutely loved it. We took her down everyday & each time she gave us a hard time leaving. It's an easy walk down, but a hike back up, although a short lived one. There are other houses around the lake with their own docks. The use of the dock was great. We didn't bring our kayaks because we saw from earlier reviews that kayaks & a row boat were there, but that wasn't so on our trip. We purchased blow up lounges & floated around on those & felt like kids again. The camp itself was behind a vacant cabin. The fire pit was perfect, abundant firewood provided. Adirondack chairs were provided as well as a picnic table and another table. The hook ups for the camper were easy to use. We had a great time & even extended our stay by two days. The one drawback was the size of the stone used as ground cover for the majority of the hip camp, it was pretty large & cumbersome to walk on. My dog could hardly walk on it, so I laid a blanket path out for her from the camper to the fire pit. We had to wear shoes to walk on it. We tried to use a blow up mattress to sleep next to the fire pit one night & the stone made it difficult. They laid it as drainage for the rain, but smaller sized gravel would have been softer on the feet.

Karl is such a wonderful host, one of the kindest people I've met! The cabin was perfect, in an isolated spot, but still close enough to civilization if there was an emergency. It was cozy and had a ton of supplies like pots and pans, garbage bags, plastic cutlery, paper towels, a wash bucket. I appreciated the camp stove too! The fire pit was great and there was firewood there, along with kindling. The outhouse was super clean. Karl and I sat for a bit (after checking on me I invited him to, otherwise he gives you plenty of space!) and had an interesting conversation about life, which was great. There were also some barred owls at night, and he knew how to call to them. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. Thanks for your hospitality Karl! 10/10 recommendation
