Camping near Elm Creek

Where the Platte River crosses Nebraska, many travelers have followed, from the days of riding westward in covered wagons on the Oregon Trail or on horseback on the Pony Express to the modern era of cars and RVs zooming across Interstate 80. Located west of Kearney, Elm Creek is a peaceful spot for a layover. South of town, the Sandy Channel State Recreation Area offers six lakes, a flowing river, and a bounty of activities, including hiking, paddling, boating, and fishing. You might not expect to find one of Nebraska’s best spots for scuba diving here, but it’s true. In addition to primitive campsites found at Sandy Channel, Elm Creek camping spots can be found across the greater region in the Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands.
