For those seeking a more accessible camping experience, Holter Lake State Recreation Area is about an hour’s drive south of Sun River. Set up at campsites RVs and tents on level gravel pads with amenities like fire rings, picnic tables, and available potable water. The lakeside setting provides convenient access to the concrete boat launch for water skiing, swimming, kayaking, and fishing for rainbow trout, yellow perch, and kokanee salmon. Follow Meriwether Canyon Trail to the Gates of the Mountains Wilderness Area to see bald eagles, mule deer, and other local wildlife too.
