My family settled on this plot of land at the turn of the century, moving west in a covered wagon. And aside from a brief time in the late 80's it has been in our family ever since. For most of the 20th century the property was a small farm, grazing cattle and mowed for bailing hay. We are trying to rejuvenate the property and breathing some new life into this old plot of land.

The pasture is quite visible from Old Route 66, nearly adjoining it. Therefore people traveling “the Mother Road” find it convenient to stay with us. Grass is the best forage for horses, especially older ones, so we take care of our pastures, making for beautiful scenery for campers, too. Plus the entire back mile is bordered by old forest. And there is a swimming hole not a half mile away.
This is a quiet and private site, bordered by a neighbor's old forest on back, other neighbor's cattle pasture on side, and you're in one of the pastures used by the Horse Sanctuary. (You are camping about 1/4 mile, more or less, from our house.)
We regularly see coyote, wild turkeys, deer, fireflies, and the like.
We are just 1/2 mile off Old Route 66, therefore there are quirky little museums and great restaurants (for such a rural area!).
Plus we are only about an hour's drive from Branson. MO. which is a known tourist attraction.

In the 1840's there was a trading post on the property known as Lick Skillet because the owner would set the pans out at night for the dogs to lick. Today, we call it Fanthorn Forest and it's our dream, our haven and our home. We love sharing our farm with others and allowing them the same experience of peace and tranquility we get from the land.Learn more about this land:Located only 50 miles SE of Kansas City, MO! We have woods and pasture with Settle's Ford Wildlife area (fishing and hiking available) 1/4 mile away. Camping is primitive with only an outhouse and no shower facilities. There are MANY thorn trees, so hikers must have proper footwear. Fire ring, wood and a grate for cooking are provided. Livestock encounters are also available with owners in attendance. All proceeds are put back in the farm to care for the animals and the land. RV's are allowed, but we do not have any hook ups available and they are not allowed in the woods. Parking area is at the end of the driveway for both cars and RV's. We love kids and will provide lawn darts or any other games we have available if requested. Situated atop a ridge in SW MO, on the eastern edge of the great plains just west of the Ozark Mountain foothills, you’ll have beautiful farmland views to the east, south and west, including incredible sunsets over the water of our pond (fish all you want, pull out crappie slabs for dinner). Expect peace and quiet here, with the exception of the occasional mama cow calling to her calf. Great spot to spend the night near the junction of I-49 & I-44. Ride bicycles, kayak on the ponds, take a walk in peace. Small town of Jasper is a few miles away, with RoadHouse Grocery and Liquor store, RV dump stations on both sides of the highway, and 4 fuel stops. Lamar (birthplace of Harry S Truman) is 8 miles north.
If you're traveling with horses, there is a 1-acre pen available for holding them overnight. It is 6-strand electrified high-tensile wire with a pipe swing gate and a galvanized water tank. There's also a worked arena with small pens to keep horses separate but adjacent to one another upon request. Negative Coggins required. Prairie hay small squares available for purchase. Riding is not allowed. We have 2 horses on site that are vaccinated and Coggins negative.
We have friendly medium-sized dogs. Yours are welcome to run free with the pack. Expect the usual sniffing around and getting to know one another behavior.

This peaceful countryside cabin has a nice little lake just right for fishing just steps from the front door from which folks have caught catfish, bluegill, crappie, and bass. The Appleton City Lake does not allow swimming. It does not allow boats with motors. However, you could bring a kayak if you wanted. We have a community fire pit and picnic tables too. The grill is electric with pellets. We provide firewood for the pit and pellets for the grill.

We are a little over one mile down a level gravel road and just 3.5 miles total from the small town of Appleton City where we have a little restaurant, Caseys, a very nice little grocery store (closes 7 pm), coffee house (mon-sat 8 am-11 am), and Dollar General (closes 9 pm). I live nearby on the property and am available to greet you when you arrive.
Other things to note
Appleton City is a small town. If you are coming in late, you may want to stop on the way to pick up food. We have a few stores in town, but some folks are caught off guard to find out the stores close early. But Caseys has sandwiches and assorted quick items and is open until 11 pm.

The Appleton City Lake does not allow swimming. It does not allow boats with motors. However, you could bring a kayak if you wanted. We have a community fire pit and picnic tables too. The grill is electric with pellets. We provide firewood for the pit and pellets for the grill.

We are a little over one mile down a level gravel road and just 3.5 miles total from the small town of Appleton City where we have a little restaurant, Caseys, a very nice little grocery store (closes 7 pm), coffee house (mon-sat 8 am-11 am), and Dollar General (closes 9 pm). I live nearby on the property and am available to greet you when you arrive.
Other things to note
Appleton City is a small town. If you are coming in late, you may want to stop on the way to pick up food. We have a few stores in town, but some folks are caught off guard to find out the stores close early. But Caseys has sandwiches and assorted quick items and is open until 11 pm.

When I arrived I was upgraded to a site that had a small privacy wall a couple chairs and some neatly decorated route 66 paraphernalia on the privacy wall. The RV park has full electric, water and sewer hookups on each site. There is a bathhouse that contains men's and women's bathrooms with showers and a washer dryer area for campers use. I must say the bath house was spotlessly clean and well maintained. The park itself has a New Mexico midwest vibe to it even though it's in Southwest Missouri. Would definitely go there again.

I just can’t say enough wonderful things about this experience. The hosts are so kind and caring. The camping spot was in a clearing with a short walk across a bridge. There was a great fire pit and Layne kept it stocked with wood. He even provided a gas torch that made starting fires easy and fun. In addition to this beautiful, quiet camping spot….a nearby fairy cove was beautifully situated which made for hours of reading. In the middle of the pasture, a gated area with additional space for hanging out with the animals was a two minute walk from my camping spot. All weekend long, I enjoyed getting to know all the animals. Each animal has a name and a personality. I loved the horses but quickly began to appreciate the cattle, alpacas, llama, pig, cats and dogs. The rescued animals are healthy, well-fed and loved. It was the most restful and unique camping experience. The owners added some great fall/Halloween decorations that thrills the kid in all of us. Kids would really benefit from this environment. I had no problem getting cell service but wouldn’t have minded either way. The sunsets were especially gorgeous. The hosts left me to myself but didn’t mind when I had questions- they are so smart. I enjoyed my stay so much I added another day on. I got to take my gravel bike out and explore all the nearby areas. Being able to bike was an added bonus. I am already excited to bring my grandson back!

We wanted to try camping with our two little girls. This worked for a secluded, quiet spot. The wagon provided to take transport gear was super helpful. Also the torch provided to start a fire. Grass was freshly mowed and made the clearing inviting. It was surprisingly not too buggy even though it was humid. We didn’t spend much time with Cheryl, but she and her husband were hospitable. Our girls loved the animals!

The campsite was nicely mowed and the paths were kept nice. Plenty of room for multiple tents or a larger group. It is primitive, so keep that in mind. No hookups, but they did have an outhouse and it was decent. They also have potable water, but its at the barn. The animals were awesome. You're able to feed and maybe pet a Llama, alpaca, or some horses. They also have cows youre able to walk around with. Cheryl and her husband were awesome and super nice.
The only downside to me was having to park and walk all the gear to the site. Theres no way of driving to the site because of the creek. Its not far, but if you have alot of stuff be prepared to take a few trips. However, they did have a nice cart you can use to haul stuff.
Would stay there again and I would also recommend.

The field had a tree line easily seen Fire pit and firewood ready. The animals are all friendly and they everyone is great to work with. There is water available but it is really a dry camping location. Self contained is best camping but the place and people are fantastic. We had no complaints. We strung up a hammock and enjoyed the fire, lightening bugs and stars!

Really enjoyed staying here! This is primitive camping in a horse pasture, but the views are great (surrounded by horses and lots of stars on clear nights) and we really enjoyed the amenities. There is a hot tub in a green house, opportunities to feed horses, etc. We found a couple fun swimming holes nearby and enjoyed checking out some nearby roadside attractions like Red Oak.

Kind and helpful staff with a beautiful little spread south of Clinton and north of Springfield. Accommodations of the Cowboy Cabin were solid with only a few small suggestions. Having a microwave with the kitchenette is great but I'd recommend finding a way to get a 2-burner propane stove so guests can cook (I brought my own). The 2nd thing would be that the window A/C was trying it's best, it really had trouble keeping the cabin cool during the warmest time of the day, once the installed wall unit is up and operational though I'm sure it'll be fine. Last and equally important, the wifi. I'm sure it's difficult to get anything faster but 5 up and 5 down is just not enough to keep up with the modern internet these days. The 5G signal I got on my phone was actually faster.
