• A paved bike trail is ½ mile away, offering access to the beach and nearby town.

Nestled in a historically rich area, this campground offers a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural significance, making it an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts and history buffs alike. The region was once the disputed territory of the Chippewa and Sioux tribes, where raiding parties created a challenging environment for early settlers. The first white explorer to traverse the future Benson area was Gideon S. Pond, an Indian missionary who sought to understand the local tribes' customs while accompanying a hunting party along the Chippewa River.
It wasn't until after the Great Sioux Uprising that western Minnesota became a safe haven for white settlers. Ole Corneiliusen, a Norwegian immigrant, is believed to be the first permanent resident of the Benson area, arriving in 1866. By this time, the railroad had extended from Minneapolis to Delano, paving the way for increased settlement in western Minnesota.
The early development of Benson and Swift County was closely tied to the railroad's expansion. In 1869, A.W. Lathrop and W.V. Lathrop opened the first general store in anticipation of the railroad's arrival. From the very beginning Russell was great to work with! He answered all of our questions in a timely manner. He was always polite and helpful with suggestions of places in the area. His communication was amazing! He let us know about the wildlife on the property. He told us there was a killdeer birds nest in the grass which was helpful so we’re able to avoid it with our dogs.. We stayed there for Memorial weekend and had a great time. It was peaceful and relaxing. We enjoyed kayaking off the dock they had. We enjoyed sitting around the camp fire. We all enjoyed being at Russel’s place. We would go again in a heart beat. Only thing to watch out for would be one of the neighbors dog, a German Shepard. He was really sweet and friendly, just startled us every time because he was so quiet. You would look over and he would be standing there like he was part of the group hanging out. There is plenty of room to play yard games. It was a great getaway. Thank you Russell for having us!!

This was our second time at Russell’s and its safe to say we will be back again! We had to cut our trip a day short due to some bad weather, and Russell was so kind to offer us a place to stay to ride out the storm. The land is very beautiful. You have a beautiful view of the lake. It’s very private. There are other campers there, but they’re far away from you. The only drawback is you have to take your trash with you. But I believe it was worth it. Good price for what you get.
