WELCOME TO BUTTE LA ROSE, THE HEART OF THE ATCHAFALAYA BASIN AND THE HEART OF ACADIANA:
In the early 1930s, when the Army Corps of Engineers carved two long levees right through the Atchafalaya River Basin, what had once been a widely sprawling river system prone to seasonal flooding became a fifteen-mile-wide "spillway" contained between those two earthen walls. The water level in the Basin rose by several feet, permanently flooding many areas, and people who had made their homes there eventually moved to communities on the dry, western side of the levee--Henderson, Catahoula, Bayou Benoit and beyond--leaving no trace of the old settlements behind. Only one community remained. Perched on a ridge along the banks of the Atchafalaya River, Butte La Rose is the only community in St. Martin Parish that is still located between the Basin levees. No other place can claim to be the heart of Atchafalaya as credibly as Butte La Rose can. The community is nestled against one of the more winding meanderings of the Atchafalaya River, and residents remain closely tied to the river and other nearby waterways--fishing, crawfishing, frogging, and hunting, enjoying bayou-side crawfish boils and pleasure boating. So many waterways surround Butte La Rose--Butte La Rose Canal, Henderson Lake, Lake Begneaux, Lake Pelba--it's as close to an island as you can get without actually being an island.
We are only 3 miles from Interstate 10, but we are a small remote camping village.
Many hummingbirds visit here every year. They arrive in March and leave in Sept.

The Iberia Market Garden is an urban farm on private property and a project started in 2014 to bring healthy fresh vegetables and economic investment to the surrounding low-income neighborhood. The property has had various garden areas added over the years and is a great place to relax and meditate. Proceeds from Hipcamp go toward supporting garden upkeep and operations.

The fenced-in site is in a well lived in, low-income, busy neighborhood of New Iberia. The hosts live in the small brick cottage in front. The property is surrounded by gardens for guests to enjoy. There is a 15AMP regular outlet to plug into and a nearby water hose for travelers to use. We used to have a white German sheperd "Peanut" but he passed away in 2025. So that's the dog seen in some pics. There is a little dog "Lithium" (terrier mix) that stays on the property and will be out sometimes but generally stays inside the camper belonging to our groundskeeper Jenn.

Note: The turn onto Herbert Ortego Road is a hard turn back to the right. Go slow, turn wide, and take your time. The Galaxy is a small campground with 8 large spots. It's located outside of Washington, Louisiana where there are no city lights and lots of stars and things in the sky. There is 50-amp electricity with full hook-ups at each site. I have a laundry service and a small dog park. Short term and long term are welcomed. The sunrises and sunsets are exceptional here. I have a picnic table and fire pit available for your use. Lovely little spot! We stayed in the RV and it was perfect for our needs. Comfortable, cozy RV, bed was comfy. If it had not been raining we would have really enjoyed the outdoor patio area also. Hosts were just wonderful! Sooo very sweet. Location was fun! Close to several locations where you can take a great airboat ride! Wish we could have stayed longer. Highly highly recommend!

This is our 2md overnight in 2 years at Phanat’s little oasis in the middle of New Iberia and we highly recommend. Our late arrival and rainy weather prevented us from enjoying the full experience (lovely Zen garden area!) but we still enjoyed a peaceful night of sleep.

Ginny & Scott were excellent hosts and spent the evening regaling us on the front porch with info and stories about the local area. Outside areas were well manicured and the porch, bedroom, and bath we used were immaculate, nicely decorated, and well provisioned. We enjoyed a drive along the levee and dinner at Turtles waterfront restaurant

A gem of a little campsite.... I pulled in after dark and was led by hosts to a lighted pathway leading to a bridge over a small coulée... Had the entire site to myself.... a wooded copse full of fireflies and owls...
Negatives would be of course the inevitable and ever-present mosquitoes found in wooded damp areas of south Louisiana... were not however overwhelming... Of more concern were the fire ants.... These South American fire ants are well established in south Louisiana ... there were several treated hills that had been killed but more had come about since this treatment and I mentioned this to the hosts.
I stayed Friday Saturday and Sunday night... I was surprised at the amount of vehicular traffic in the area including four-wheeling kids.... But things definitely calmed down as the night progressed.
Ali will mention the GPS directions are somewhat flawed depending on the direction you take ...Probably a good idea to talk to Ali to get the fine visual points of where to turn.
Overall this was a very nice experience.... very kind and gracious hosts and prices significantly better than some of the surrounding choices for hip camping

Ginny and her husband were friendly and accommodating! We had one very small issue and they were proactive to take care of it. Showers were warm and the bed was comfy. I loved having access to a fire pit. Ginny has thought to stock the rv with anything you could possibly need!
