Built in the 1940's by the late actor Eugene Pallette as a hideaway from Hollywood and a Refuge from looming world disaster after World War 2. There once was a cannery, a power plant a sawmill and a 5,000 sq' concrete warehouse built to withstand anything and house years of provisions. Many buildings are still standing and utilized.  The past guest list included Cark Gable (Gone with The Wind) Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan and Errol Flynn and many more. Located on the shores of the Imnaha river we have 2 miles of accessible, private spots. There is a lot of wildlife here and there is no better place to "unwind" and regroup. Pitch your tent in total privacy along the shores of the River and then kick back and take in all the sights and sounds of Nature. Surrounded by canyons on all sides tucked away in a private Valley is 300+ acres of room to roam along the river.   We have firewood and frozen bottles of water for coolers available for an extra charge And have added 3 outhouses. Potable water, picnic tables, and outhouses on site. Pets are welcome. Camp fires are permitted outside of a fire ban. Our guests love staying here: "Camping at the ranch was pure enjoyment. Welcome to Sundown RV Park and Campground, conveniently located right in the town of Grangeville. We are within walking distance of restaurants, grocery store/deli, Family Dollar Store, a department store, hospital and churches. Although a small town, Grangeville is by far the largest within an hour and a half, and has many more amenities than the smaller towns in the area. Most cell phones can get reception in Grangeville, and we have free WIFI. As new owners we knew this little park needed some TLC and improvements so we got to work. So far we have added new gravel, signs, electrical meters, and 4 retaining walls, flower planters, and have worked hard to clean and spruce up the property.

Though fully off-grid, the property is supported by a solar power system and offers running water and internet access—providing comfort while preserving the simplicity and sacredness of the wild. The surrounding forest invites you into a slower rhythm. Tall pine, fir, and spruce trees release rich, aromatic oils into the air, creating a natural setting for forest bathing along the camp’s trails. Each breath carries grounding and calming properties long known to support the nervous system, ease stress, and encourage deep presence. Wildflowers bloom in season, birdsong fills the mornings, butterflies and dragonflies dance through the clearings, and wildlife quietly moves through the landscape. This is a place where silence is not empty, but full. Evenings invite reflection beneath expansive skies. With no light pollution, the night reveals millions of stars, offering a humbling sense of wonder and perspective. An outdoor fire pit (available outside of fire season) provides a sacred gathering space—perfect for quiet conversation, shared stories, or simply sitting together in warmth and stillness. The outdoor kitchen and picnic shelter support both community and self-sufficiency. Guests have access to a refrigerator, pellet grill, pizza oven, Dutch oven stand, large griddle, and range top. A sink plumbed with a garden hose is available, with hot water heated on the range. Recycling bins are provided, and bathroom facilities are on site. An inground shower on the property offers a refreshing and grounding experience. A 10 station fitness trail will fill the bill for outdoor conditioning and a mile long walking trail, where using all five senses, is perfect for deep immersion in nature.

Lakes, creeks, and peaks, oh my! Payette National Forest has ‘em all. Salmon-Challis National Forest and Nez-Pearce Clearwater National Forest are its neighbors, while its Victor Peak, Loon Creek, Loon Lake, North Loon Mountain, Bruin Mountain, Bear Pete Mountain, and Boulder Creek could keep you busy for months. Forage for mushrooms or berries, fish in the chinook salmon hatchery at the South Fork of the Salmon River, or snowboard down Brundage Mountain. Hike to the three historic fire lookouts, or check out the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, the second largest wilderness area outside Alaska (don’t worry, plenty before you have visited and returned). In this wealth of outdoor activity, it’s hard to tear yourself away for a visit into town. However, you will be glad you took the time to visit the closest town of McCall, where luxury mountain lodges have thermal spas perfect for resting your aching bones in between treks up or down the mountains.

Nestled along the picturesque Salmon River, the Carlson family campground offers a unique blend of rich history and natural beauty, making it an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts and families alike. Established in the 1920s, this family-run ranch has been a cornerstone of the community, with Gus Carlson starting his sheep herding journey at just 14 years old. In 1929, he purchased his first property and began sheep ranching, a tradition that continues today under the stewardship of Mick and Gail Carlson. The campground features cozy RV pads and charming cabins situated within the family ranch, providing guests with a serene escape surrounded by stunning landscapes. The bathhouse and RV pads are located in a field that once served as a lambing area and cattle pen, offering a glimpse into the ranch's storied past. The historic buildings along the river were originally used to shelter sheep and their newborn lambs during the critical early weeks of life, ensuring their safety from predators during lambing season in March and April. Guests can also explore the remnants of the cook and bunkhouse, where Grandma Gail or a hired cook would prepare hearty meals for the herders and lambing crew. The nearby "night corral" was where the night watchman would secure the sheep, ensuring that any newborn lamb
