Nestled along the picturesque Salmon River, the Carlson family campground offers a unique blend of rich history and natural beauty, making it an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts and families alike. Established in the 1920s, this family-run ranch has been a cornerstone of the community, with Gus Carlson starting his sheep herding journey at just 14 years old. In 1929, he purchased his first property and began sheep ranching, a tradition that continues today under the stewardship of Mick and Gail Carlson. The campground features cozy RV pads and charming cabins situated within the family ranch, providing guests with a serene escape surrounded by stunning landscapes. The bathhouse and RV pads are located in a field that once served as a lambing area and cattle pen, offering a glimpse into the ranch's storied past. The historic buildings along the river were originally used to shelter sheep and their newborn lambs during the critical early weeks of life, ensuring their safety from predators during lambing season in March and April. Guests can also explore the remnants of the cook and bunkhouse, where Grandma Gail or a hired cook would prepare hearty meals for the herders and lambing crew.
