Located on the 1983 lava flow field. There are uneven surfaces that require careful attention but is safe for the adventurous and fit. No annoying croaking frogs and no mosquitos makes this sea level location with blue water ocean views and trade wind breezes a perfect paradise with very little rain and lots of sunshine. There a 10' x 12' raised deck gazebo with a picnic table and ample surfaces for exercising and stretch yoga. We are a few minutes from the black sand clothing optional beach and clean ocean soaking/swimming and Uncle Robert's Wednesday night music extravaganza. There are refrigerators available and a composting toilet and a hot water shower for conservative water showering as all water must be transported in. The advantage is very little rain and lots of sunshine makes this location a pleasure with fluffy clouds to look at that don't get you wet!!! 2 furnished small houses and a gazebo with ample parking space and solar charging for electronics. Starlink WiFi is available and will provide connectivity and cell phone links !

Weekend Trip to Yip Camp and Eco-Retreat Center
This was such a fun stay! The cabin was full of character and Thomas was so welcoming and laid-back. We loved our encounters with the namesake host and property security (Yip). The cabin is close to a couple other camping sites on the land but it still feels private. The cabin itself was super comfortable - warm bed, hot shower, and cool loft which came in handy for drying our perpetually damp clothes.
The rainforest around the site is lush and dense. No stars as it was dumping the whole weekend but the sounds of the rain pattering on the roof and the symphony of coquis made for the perfect lullaby. We had a 4x4 so getting to the cabin was no problem but I'd definitely drive slow on the approach road as it's very dark at night and puddles/potholes seem to spawn in a few hours!

7 nights at Yip Camp and Eco-Retreat Center
Yip Camp is easily accessible, located on the big island of Hawaii. This property is just a few miles from Volcano National Park off a cinder forest road. It’s a beautiful place, with chickens and roosters roaming the grounds, very green lush and peaceful. We stayed in the tiny “cottage”. It was exactly what we expected. Rustic, & charming. A dry place to lay our heads after a long day of exploring the island. It has a queen sized bed, a loft with a bed, a table, lanterns, a tabletop burner, pans etc. There is an outdoor toilet and shower with lots of hot water. A table and chairs to sit on outside. There was also a place to have a campfire and a picnic table. Thomas was an excellent host, very friendly and offered ideas of places to visit, explore and dine. Yet he gave us plenty of privacy. He was very easy to get a hold of the day we flew in & returned phone calls promptly. I intended to camp in a tent, but I’m happy I booked the cottage as it rained every day the entire week. Even though it was wet the roads were always accessible. My husband and I had a great experience and would recommend Thomas property Yip Camp to others who were looking for an adventure and a bit of the outdoors and the country over staying in Hilo or Kona.

It was just what I expected for a small cabin in the Hawaiin rainforest. Perfect size for solo travelers or a couple. Cabin included a Marine style pump toilet, galley, and shower with sink. For those comfortable with off the grid living, this is for you.

I was very happy with the cabin we stayed in. Beautiful working farm. The farm hands were very nice and helpful. One of them made us two very good dinners for a small fee. We eat some great fruit grown on the farm. The bathroom and showers were very clean. I would definitely stay there again.

4 nights at Lava Rock Cabin ~ Off Grid Hale
This is a nice private hideaway type cabin. It is about 15-20 minutes to the main road, so it really does feel away from it all, tropical, and junglely. We really enjoyed the sounds of the insects and frogs at night, and the rain on the roof the night it rained. The beds were quite comfortable, situated in two separate rooms. My friend had the loft room, and she really enjoyed it. (Careful on the stairs/ladder)
The pump toilet down below is a bit of a hassle, but it works fine, and reminds you that you’re roughing it a bit, (a hipcamp after all)
We came up with our own system for nighttime, which you can guess, (regarding bathroom).
We had the place to ourselves for three nights, then neighbors arrived the fourth night. It still felt quite private.
Sona greeted us upon arrival and explained all nuances. Communication was excellent.
We visited Volcanoes National Park two days during our stay. The cabin is conveniently located for that. We found the best nearby coffee at Hilo Coffee Mill a few miles towards Hilo.

We had two of three houses on the land. The houses are powered by solar with kitchens, hot water showers and bio pump flush toilets. The surroundings are lush and beautiful. About 20-25 minutes to Volcano. Lovely stay.

Thomas was incredibly accommodating as we booked this cabin last minute so that we could spend more time on the east side of the Big Island without having to drive back to Kona. He was there to greet us in the evening when we arrived after a day at the park, and was there to send us off as we continued on our journey in the morning.
This cabin provides more of a camping feel as the property is off the grid, but you'll find all the essentials such as a full sized bed, linens, warm shower and a toilet. If you're like me and attract mosquitos, bringing a mosquito net may be useful as well.

Weekend Trip to Yip Camp and Eco-Retreat Center
Tom was absolutely wonderful—so accommodating, even when we booked his cottage at the last minute! He made us coffee in the morning, gave us a lovely tour of the property, and was such a joy to chat with. He even sent us home with fresh fruit and flowers! The cottage itself was cozy and comfortable, and I was especially happy to find the shower had nice hot water. Highly recommend!

We loved visiting with Thomas! We had so much fun feeding the chickens they were so cute and small.And we also loved feeding the koi fish.And at night we heard frogs.The shower was warm which we appreciated after a sweaty day exploring the national park.
It rained mostly every day but we were dry inside. Our 8 year old loved sleeping in the loft. When we drove onto the property, there was a big sign to beware of dog…. The reality was a teeny dog named Yip which gave us all a big laugh. Yip has a big bark and personality and does not bite :)
