The Great Sand Dunes and Zapata Falls is just a (gorgeous) 35 minute drive. Camping here at the Rabbit Hole Ranch is primitive and dispersed (no numbered sites) and there 30 acres available for you to use. Just follow the signs to the designated area and pick out a spot you like. Some spots have fire rings, some don’t. We are working on getting more, but in the meantime you’re welcome to bring your own. Or feel free to dig out a little hole. It works great and is easy to extinguish when you fill it back in and bury it. Please do not bury any trash. Typically, you will experience a rare kind of solitude and silence that feels…. other-worldly, with incredible sunrises and sunsets filling the enormous skies. On holidays, however, expect it to be busy. Our dogs are working dogs and they are more than happy to help keep you and your pets safe. Please help make their jobs easier by not leaving any food or trash in or around tents. Please keep your pets on leash or under control until you’re comfortably certain they get along with our dogs. And please report any issues promptly. This year we have a new Great Pyrenees to greet you, her name is Boudicca and she’s excited to meet everyone! Returning this season is 12 year old KayLee, also a GP and and Finn, our little dude from Alaska. Quiet time begins at 10:00 pm. Most of the year the road is fine, but heavy snow or rain has required a 4 wheel drive at times. You'll be overlooking the city of Trinidad, with an extremely stunning view of Fisher's Peak. As the Scenic Passenger Train is heard in the distance you'll look up towards Mount Blanca and imagine your next adventure living among the wildflowers of this High Desert Mountain Hipcamp. After recovering from a wildfire, the ancient sage brushes that had previously made the land harsh and unwelcoming are nearly gone, replaced with an abundance of grasses and wildflowers if blessed with rains. Open Land as far as you can go to the East you'll follow the Coyote canyon to high mountain lookouts. There are old logging maintenance roads you could take advantage of, so Hike, Bike or Motor around the local area. Fort Garland and Blanca have a community center (pool), septic dump and water fill and can provide groceries. The Great Sand dunes are about 45 minutes away. The Sand Dunes swimming pool, fed by a very hot artisan well is about an hour away. Mountain Home Lake is also within 1/2 an hour or so for fishing/water sports with a nice boat ramp. Escape from light pollution like never before, a clear night sky will make the whole trip worthwhile! Lots of wild life and you will most likely see some deer, hear the coyotes, and count the different colors of the humming birds. You can book a train ride out of Alamosa, and visit the local historic towns. The views will make it hard to leave the campsite, but there are tons of experiences and things to do in the area so make sure to do some research before you arrive.  The weather and wind can be unpredictable in the mountains, so be prepared.  There are two entrances onto the property, one at the bottom and one at the top. You can avoid some wind by camping near Lewis-Smith Rd at the lowest part of the land.  Also, the site can accommodate large trailers/RV's but just make sure to plan your entrance/exit carefully and don't go to far down the hills.  Just choose a wise spot to park if in a big rig.  There are some small tires around that you can use to sit on or if you dig a hole that you fill in before leaving you can make a temporary toilet.  Make sure to haul out all your trash and leave the site cleaner than it was when you arrived and respect the land.  If you do come across a mess from the previous camper and clean it up, just let us know and we will give you a refund for the night. As the Scenic Passenger Train is heard in the distance you'll look up towards Mount Blanca and imagine your next adventure living among the wildflowers of this High Desert Mountain Hipcamp. After recovering from a wildfire, the ancient sage brushes that had previously made the land harsh and unwelcoming are nearly gone, replaced with an abundance of grasses and wildflowers if blessed with rains. Open Land as far as you can go to the East you'll follow the Coyote canyon to high mountain lookouts. There are old logging maintenance roads you could take advantage of, so Hike, Bike or Motor around the local area. Fort Garland and Blanca have a community center (pool), septic dump and water fill and can provide groceries. The Great Sand dunes are about 45 minutes away. The Sand Dunes swimming pool, fed by a very hot artisan well is about an hour away. Mountain Home Lake is also within 1/2 an hour or so for fishing/water sports with a nice boat ramp. Escape from light pollution like never before, a clear night sky will make the whole trip worthwhile! Lots of wild life and you will most likely see some deer, hear the coyotes, and count the different colors of the humming birds. You can book a train ride out of Alamosa, and visit the local historic towns. The views will make it hard to leave the campsite, but there are tons of experiences and things to do in the area so make sure to do some research before you arrive.  The weather and wind can be unpredictable in the mountains, so be prepared.  There are two entrances onto the property, one at the bottom and one at the top. You can avoid some wind by camping near Lewis-Smith Rd at the lowest part of the land.  Also, the site can accommodate large trailers/RV's but just make sure to plan your entrance/exit carefully and don't go to far down the hills.  Just choose a wise spot to park if in a big rig.  There are some small tires around that you can use to sit on or if you dig a hole that you fill in before leaving you can make a temporary toilet.  Make sure to haul out all your trash and leave the site cleaner than it was when you arrived and respect the land.  If you do come across a mess from the previous camper and clean it up, just let us know and we will give you a refund for the night. This is a lovely spot that we had all to our selves. We parked our trailer near the river and could listen to it all night long. This was a convenient location to both Curchara (2 miles) and La Veta (9 miles), plus all of the hiking trails and lakes in the surrounding national forest. I'm sure we will be coming back.

We brought out wolf pup 16bhsbl travel trailer out to camps the site is huge with plenty of space for 2-3 other families. The directions were easy to follow, however there was one sign that was missing as per the written instructions. One of our party members missed the gate because of the missing sign. The entrance to the camp sign was a little rutted out and you should feel comfortable off roading with a trailer.

Tremendously gorgeous views! Very quiet area with pretty clear directions to site. A fire pit is available, we made s'mores and had a great time. Once we went to bed we did hear (likely) coyotes howling in the distance and with small critters rustling near the tent, nothing dangerous or unusual for the type of area. Definitely would recommend especially for the quick access to the Great Sand Dunes Nat’l Park!!

Beautiful and spacious site. It is close to the highway making access easy, especially if you have a large rig (we camped with a 28’ fifth wheel and 16’ trailer and had PLENTY of space). River runs next to site. Trees and brush surrounding, making it private with great views. Close to La Veta and Cuchara. Cows might greet you from the neighboring pasture!

The campground is a basic campground right off the highway. Easy to find easy to navigate through. The signs are well posted. The sites are huge and level, the shower rooms and bathrooms are incredible, they are heated and large. There are also washers and dryers in the building and a vending machine. The hook ups were new and well-placed. And best of all it is priced reasonably, considering how high RV parks have gotten.

this was an awesome spot! i don’t think there were any other campers when we went so it felt like we truly had the whole place to ourselves! the mountain view was absolutely incredible, and the open night sky was spectacular to see! our dogs absolutely loved it, didn’t want to leave! temperature was great, didn’t need electric hookups. was a little windy, but nothing some bungee cables couldn’t fix! the host was also very kind and detailed with instructions, and allowed an early check in. overall this was spot was awesome and i would highly recommend!
