Welcome to the San Luis Valley; the largest Alpine Valley in the world!
San Luis Valley is a region in south-central Colorado with a small portion overlapping into New Mexico. The valley is approximately 122 miles long and 74 miles wide, making it the largest alpine valley in the world. It extends from the Continental Divide on the northwest rim into New Mexico on the south.
This campground sits close to the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range. I encourage binoculars or even a telescope to view wildlife and check out the Rockies and then the night sky views!
Looking to submerse yourself in nature? The Sangre de Cristo Range in Colorado contains the following 14ers: Blanca Peak, Challenger Point, Crestone Needle, Crestone Peak, Culebra Peak, Ellingwood Point, Humboldt Peak, Kit Carson Peak, Mount Lindsey, and Little Bear Peak.
Great Sand Dunes are visible from every site. With unlimited mountain views, beautiful starry night skies, come see the Milky Way, Eclipse, even Meteor showers!!!
History: this land was originally part of a large cattle ranch in the 1980s. The main ranch is still up and running but this parcel was used for many purposes over the years.
In 2021, we were featured in USA Todays Ten Best for star gazing!
My property has 360 degree mountains views with the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range as our back yard. Nearby you can find many different trail systems for all kinds of outdoor enthusiasts. From hiking to jeeping, ATV or dirt biking and equestrians - you can find it all!
You will be surrounded by BLM land, BACA land, and Wildlife Refuge just two miles away. Be sure to bring extra bug spray and protection needed against biting insects such as flies, gnats, and mosquitoes.
For those bringing your pets, they MUST be on a leash/lead at all times. While I do not have much cactus on my property, I do have an abundance of greasewood (Chico brush) which is very thorn-like if stepped on.
Accommodations for those with livestock or horses, just make sure you chat in advance your initial message.
Close to BLM, and National Forest as well as 3 hot springs within 20 miles and the Great Sand Dunes.

If you're into offroading, check out Marshall pass rd/Poncha creek Rd. Medano pass is another one of our favorites and is an amazing way to finish out a day in Sand Dunes National Park.
Joyful Journey hot springs is 3 mins away and for $15 you can soak all day long and enjoy a hot shower before returning back to camp.

Remote yet accessible by county road, the property is a few miles from Hartsel, where you'll find a general store and saloon, and the other historic railroad settlements of Park County. The property has flat (but not *quite* level) areas for tent setup and also gently sloping and wooded areas for exploring. All supplies (including water) must be packed in, and all waste packed out. I stashed a collapsible picnic table behind the big rock and you're welcome to use that, please just fold it and stash it again. There are no structures at all on the property. Per Hipcamp and local zoning, you may not relieve yourself outdoors; you must be in a vehicle or privacy tent.
There is a fire ring. If you intend to make a camp fire, YOU MUST LET ME KNOW so I can call the Hartsel Fire Department. They will then tell me if there's a burn ban in place and I will relay that info to you. This must be done no later than 24 hours before you plan to burn. Hipcamp will sometimes turn on my fire ban based on data from the National Weather Service. The only way to know the full situation is for me to call.
If you see some expensively outfitted motorcyclists cruise by, they're from the Rawhyde Training Camp up the road so give them a wave!

The master bedroom offers a queen bed, beautiful southerly view, wood-burning stove, spacious sitting area, and opportunity for rejuvenating & relaxing.
We're in the International Dark Sky community. The stars are magnificent. You will be amazed by the vast expanse of the universe.
The Great Sand Dunes National Park - the tallest and most amazing sand dunes in North America - are visible from almost everywhere on our property. Look to the south to see this alternate view. Plan to make a day-trip to the Dunes! Don't forget about the Ziggurat (it's visible from our deck too).
We are also close to several natural hot springs resorts with both family friendly and clothing optional locations. And the choices for hiking are too numerous to list.

We had a great time staying out here this past weekend. It was very windy and rainy, but that is to be expected. The property is very calming and open, which is great for the astrophotography we were able to take. Clouds made it difficult, but that isn't Christine's fault! The water from the pump is very rusty, and we opted not to drink/use it. However, there is a Dollar General 6 miles up the road, so it was no big deal! Would definitely recommend staying here.

We absolutely loved our stay at High Peaks! Site 17 was in the perfect corner with no one between our view of the mountains and site itself was big enough to fit two 4-person tents, a 6-person tent and 2 vehicles.
There were a few sites nearby to us, but noise was not an issue. We were lucky enough to not have anyone in the sites next to us at first, but even when campers showed up it was very peaceful. We felt like we had our own private campsite even with it being Labor Day weekend!
The porta-potties were SO clean (probably the cleanest I've been in), and the toilet paper was stocked up until our last day. We appreciated that there was firewood on-site and took advantage of not having to go anywhere. The picnic table was also nice to have, and the potable water on-site was a huge blessing.
Wifi didn't work from our campsite but service was still available for calls & texts. Wind was a slight issue for us the first day, high gusts of up to 15 MPH and we had some difficulty keeping our tents down and no campfires in those conditions. It didn't effect our experience at all after it died down, but I would recommend bringing extra stakes. It also gets very hot with no tree coverage.
Sunrise & sunset had the most incredible 360 views, if you're looking for a beautiful, peaceful environment - stay here!! 10/10 would recommend again.

2 nights at Green Acres Herbal Retreat
What a sweet property with sweet hosts!
There are several places to rest and relax on the property. My favorite was next to a water fountain. There are so many treasures about, endless details to admire and enjoy. We picked goji berries and strawberries to add to our breakfast as well as herbs for accenting our dinner.
Our stay was relaxing, cozy and quiet. Mari and Dave have done an amazing job creating this herbal retreat. Would stay again. Thank you! 🙏✨️🍀 🌸

Weekend Trip to Green Acres Herbal Retreat
Mari and Dave were wonderful hosts. The space is welcoming and beautiful, with an amazing, lush greenhouse garden. We were so comfortable and felt very welcomed in their space. Spending the morning on the back patio in the greenhouse was incredibly peaceful. We would definitely book here again!

Perfectly suited for what we needed. Site was clean. Mountains to the east and west. Good communication and directions from the host.
We had no trouble following the directions to the site. For reference, Google Maps includes the unmarked unnamed dirt road where the site is located. Apple Maps does not besides a little spur.

The views of the sand dunes and surrounding mountains were wonderful and the stargazing at night was incredible because of the clear sky!
Christine welcomed us as we checked in and said that we were welcome to ride around the property with 4 wheelers , so my two granddaughters took advantage!
Water pressure was low but no big deal, we had a great time!

This was one of the coolest camping spots we’ve ever stayed at. We happened to be the only campers on the property the first night and stayed at tent site 17. The second night another set of campers joined but they were far enough away that we couldn’t hear them. We had a camper van as well as a truck with teardrop camper and there was plenty of room at tent site 17. The campground is out in the middle of nowhere. You can see the great sand dunes way off in the distance which is cool and you can’t beat the star gazing. Luckily we were the only folks at the campground. You can definitely see other campers on the campground (if there had been some) as there’s no trees or anything between the sites. They are spaced far enough apart though. Would recommend if you want beautiful views of the sky.

Great spot with 360 degree views of the mountains. The space is quiet with no hwy noise heard. Loved the innovative firepit that made it easy to light fires. It is tough to find so be sure to watch your messages for the GPS coordinates for the turnoffs.
