Highlands Ranch Hip Camp sites are located half way between Atascadero and Morro Bay. The weather at Highlands Ranch is more like the inland Atascadero side hot in the summer months and cold in the winter months. We have 4 terraced, no hook up, spots available all of which can accommodate 2 or 4 wheel drive camper vans, trucks or cars. One of the sites can be used for fifth wheel, small motorhome or multiple camper type vehicles and of course tents can be set up on all sites. Sites range from small to extra large, that are quaintly studded with oak trees and native greenery for a peaceful camp off the road. Also, from our sites available, there is only a 5 minute walk to the local, off the beaten path, restaurant called the Half Way Station (great food, beer/ wine, sweets and live music) open Thursday through Sunday, which you can find on Facebook or Instagram. You may also like, a drive, further west is the Morro Creek Ranch Country Store (Snacks, Oils, Avocados, and more), which you can find on Facebook as well and of course further west with tons of ocean fun is Morro Bay. Rural Southern Monterey County hilltop with 360° views of the surrounding valley. To the west is an unobstructed view of the Los Padres National forest, sunsets over the coast ridge from Junipero Serra peak to the north and Rocky Butte to the south. To the east is Williams Hill BLM area, with clear views of the sunrise. To the southeast is Lake San Antonio. Nacimiento Lake is a beautiful 45 minute drive to the south. Although the dirt access road can be a little dusty and bumpy for a sports car, in the 35 years I've been here it has always been accessible for a 2 wheel drive vehicle. The property is at the end of the road. No traffic, no noise, only views of the surrounding area. If you are interested in night skies, the milky way is a constant. After winter rains, everything is green and wild flowers are abundant. Stay and enjoy the vistas or travel relatively short distances for hiking in the Los Padres forest, drive CA HWY 1, visit Paso Robles wineries, boat or fish at Lake San Antonio or Lake Nacimiento. Nearby Williams Hill BLM area for hunting, shooting or ATV riding. For hunters and fisherman, Ft Hunter Liggett is to the immediate west. Occasional weekend's be entertained by military training and occasional aircraft, helicopters and planes. It is so quiet that you can hear vehicles passing several miles away on Jolon Rd in the valley below. Visitors travel to Morro bay, Avila beach to the south or Big Sur and Monterey Bay to the north. Weekend Trip to Rancho Rio Del Sol: Paso Robles, CA

The dream catcher exceed my expectations and was so cute and cozy, had a lot of extra amenities such as a propane fire pit, hot running water and a flushable toilet and the host so graciously provided towels, shampoo/conditioner/body wash and a hair dryer! The setting itself is so beautiful and has an amazing view. The “kitchen” provided has a few things but I would recommend bringing your own equipment for cooking. Lastly, the bed is very firm and unfortunately we were unable to sleep well on it at all, we used some of the outdoor chair cushions to add some extra comfort to it which helped us sleep better the second night but if you aren’t used to an extra firm mattress I would recommend bringing some extra cushion/padding. I would definitely go back again despite this as we had a lovely time. We were lucky enough to have the property to ourselves that weekend so our experience was very private but would just like to mention that the dream catcher site is located between the two other main camping sites on this property. Otherwise this place was super cool and definitely a neat find!

The Dream Catcher site was so awesome! Everything from the outdoor bathtub for an evening soak to the warmth from the heater made for a great visit. The sunset and rise from the property are also to die for! I would recommend this property to anyone that is planning on visiting the area! My pup also loved the freedom of running around the site!

Weekend Trip to Rancho Rio Del Sol: Paso Robles, CA

I originally booked the Dream Catcher, but due to repairs, Laura kindly upgraded us to the Tiny Home! A kind host, they would answer my every Q and offer if we needed anything extra like more charcoal to grill. Upon walking in, you will be blown away 😍 A cozy, vintage & artistic gem, lots of unique decor 🌱 We spun some vinyl, danced under the dimmed lighting, enjoyed homemade meals on the patio, stargazed 🌌 and took in those sunrise views 🌄 It did get a bit chilly at night, but the space heater worked well and the bed was very comfy 😌 WiFi was also steady for streaming movies. Now, the stairs to the sleeping loft / reading nook are steep & narrow — so it can be tricky for those with mobility or body-size considerations. Also, the hot water lasted about 5 minutes before turning lukewarm — just something to be aware of. On the other hand, really appreciated the cleaning supplies & disinfectant sprays that were provided 🧽 All in all, this is truly an ideal stay. From being only 15 minutes away from the world-famous Sensorio Light Exhibit, to then beautiful drives towards the coast, this made for a wonderful getaway. We hope to be able to return down the line 🥰

We had an amazing stay here! We were traveling back to Southern California from San Francisco and found ourselves needing to stop soon, but didn't prefer a motel in King City. We're so happy we found Stephan and his beautiful setup not far off the 101, west of King City. The RV was spotless, cozy, and perfectly set up for a comfortable getaway. The views are absolutely stunning — both during the day and especially at night with a sky full of stars right outside the door. Stargazing in front of the fire pit was the highlight of our trip! The host went above and beyond with his hospitality. We had forgotten groceries for breakfast, and he kindly provided us with organic free range eggs, ham, and even fresh fruit so we didn’t have to stress. Cooking and eating outside while enjoying the scenery was such a highlight. Between the peaceful setting, the fire pit for evenings under the stars, and the thoughtful touches from the host, this was one of the best camping experiences we’ve had. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a mix of relaxation, comfort, and nature.

1 night at Camp Tule Elk

Nolan's property was a lovely stop for our family. We planned to stop by San Luis Obispo on our way back from LA to visit with a family member but wanted to find a cool spot to check out with our kids (4 &1.5). The kids and I enjoyed walking around the property and saying hi to the chickens, dogs, pigeons (?), calves, horses, sheep, and goats. They also have a feed dispenser to get grains and bugs to feed the chickens. Having the tree shade was so great, as it was cool at the campsite despite temps being in the 90s. The pond was a great addition and my family enjoyed playing cornhole. Nolan also graciously permitted us to extend our checkout time so we could go explore the Carizzo Plains National Monument nearby. I would be curious as to what it is like during the spring season since it was pretty dry and desolate in the summertime. This is a really nice spot for families.

Weekend Trip to Highlands Ranch

Nathan's land was clean and level. He has some turf rugs that is nice to step out into. Very quiet, we were the only campers with our dog. The porta was clean and had toilet paper. We didn't use the shower, but there is potable water. We could see the stars, hear the birds, owls, and coyotes in the morning. It's a quick drive to Morro bay where we could paddle board/kayak. We did not get a chance to try the restaurant, but it is very close to the site. Also when coming in, you actually start at campsite 4 and incline up to 1.

Perfect weekend getaway spot. The view is absolutely beautiful and feels wonderfully remote. The camper was spotless and very comfortable, the grill outside and oven/stove inside made cooking easy no matter what weather you get, and we really appreciated the perfect fire starters that they prepared with the fire wood… no need to be a pro with fire pits. Everything was well thought out and taken care of. One of the highlights for us was stargazing. The host provided a telescope, and the sky here is unbelievably clear. Stars lit up the sky at night. The Milky Way was as incredible as I can remember ever seeing anywhere. The host is super friendly, helpful, and welcoming. You can tell they thought through every little thing you could need and then made sure it was there and easy to find. It definitely made it even more relaxing. When driving in, make sure to use the hosts directions since for the last sections the road is dirt and slight inclines. Research satellite view of the map ahead of time from Jolon Rd onward and you’ll be good. The road is definitely fine for two-wheel drive as long as it’s not pouring rain. I wouldn’t take a low ground clearance car… a bit tricky for a miata for example. We had no problem and way more clearance than needed with our 2wd RAV4 though. Between the comfort of the camper, the thoughtful amenities, the hospitality, and the night sky, this is easily one of my favorite camping spots now. We’ll definitely be back

Great place to stay, King City is about 20 minutes away, came over from HWY 1 and i was looking for a nice quiet place. The place is wonderful and the night skies are amazing. But the nearest cold beer and groceries are in King city. The Host was great the AC running when i got their but was not needed that night as it gotten cool. The bed was awesome.Just bring your own beer and food before getting there. Will stay again when passing thru the central coast.

This litte hidden Gem is at a mid point between San Francisco and Los Angeles 20 min South of King City off the 101 freeway on Jolon Rd. With a true 360 degree view on top of hill. The Lockwood valley has some of the best star gazing clear skies with little light pollution. The host Stephan, aka (Steve) was a hoot, super cool ole army fellow master meat cooker had smoked brisket that was amazing cheese and wine waiting in the fridge when I flew in and landed next to the trailer. Message him ahead before you fly in. The day was warm but the nights are cool so bring light coat or sweater. It is after all summer in coastal CA but the A/C worked well mid day and trailer was very clean and comfy. Trailer has a nice awing out front chairs on large gravel area with a fire pit and firewood so you dont have to bring your own logs. I will go back again thanks (Steve) keep up the great Hipcamp.....

This was a lovely spot! It was easy to locate and Nathan was very friendly. This is set up nicely with a level lot and turf next to each spot. There was a clean porta- potty, outdoor shower, and water. We enjoyed the birds and wildlife in the area. We felt secluded and safe. We didn’t hear any road noise at all. We would definitely book again when in the area!

This is probably one of my favorite hipcamps I ever stayed at. Everything is so thoughtfully curated for you, it made my stay super comfy. The only thing I brought of my own was my cooking set up, but other than that this place has everything you could need. It felt private, the views were spectacular and it’s close to whatever activity you’ve got on your list. It was lovely for a solo trip and I look forward to return with good company. Beautiful site and kind hosts. Land was very unique and the man-made lake was stunning! So many birds/wildlife to see. Not to mention, loved seeing the dragonflies. Our theory is that these dragonflies were brought here by the host to combat mosquitoes, which there weren't any to our surprise! The main tip is to make sure to stock up on essentials, as the closest gas station is 50 minutes away. We made the mistake of not bringing enough water, but the host was kind enough to supply us with water when we ran out. All in all, would highly recommend!

We visited the tiny Dreamcatcher for our anniversary weekend in Paso Robles and loved it. It was so peaceful there, and despite the fact we were there in the middle of July, we love the cool breeze that kissed us through the canyons. We cooked 3 meals while there, soaked in the outdoor tub, stargazed on the deck, and just enjoyed the peacefulness of the property! Definitely bring a box of camping stuff if you plan to cook meals. They have some kitchen stuff available, but not everything. The bed was also short, so if you are tall, that is something to consider.. One side of the bed does have a foot extension for a pillow…so we made that work. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to friends. Thank you, Dreamcatcher.!

The little vintage trailer was a really fun place to spend a couple of nights on our vacation in Paso Robles! We really enjoyed having the opportunity to have a quiet, peaceful, private place to relax and take in the views. The outdoor cat, Rose, was a very snuggly kitty, and it was sweet having her greet us whenever we were around. The whole outdoor sitting area was lovely - twinkly lights, a deck, chairs, a propane fire pit, an outdoor refrigerator, and lovely plantings of succulents and cacti made the place beautiful! The outdoor hot/cold tub was a neat addition to the space as well, and the fully plumbed outhouse was great. If you are looking for a unique glamping experience, we definitely recommend this place! We would be happy to visit this location again.

They are about 300 feet apart and not easily visible from each other. Property is fully fenced; both sites are next to an open field under the oaks with vineyard, olive orchard and mountain views. This property is 30 miles from Paso Robles and almost perfectly centered between Missions San Antonio and San Miguel. Lakes San Antonio and Nacimiento are close by. Coastal towns of Cayucos and Morro Bay are about an hour scenic drive, passing many wineries along the way. There is space for multiple RVs or additional tents sharing your party's RV restroom facilities. Site one will accommodate sixteen people and multiple vehicles. We have a horse, chickens, goats and pet sheep. There are lots of fruit trees, over 100 oak trees, a secret cave, and an old barn. At night you’ll hear crickets while you enjoy the fresh air. The weather at Highlands Ranch is more like the inland Atascadero side hot in the summer months and cold in the winter months. We have 4 terraced, no hook up, spots available all of which can accommodate 2 or 4 wheel drive camper vans, trucks or cars. One of the sites can be used for fifth wheel, small motorhome or multiple camper type vehicles and of course tents can be set up on all sites. Sites range from small to extra large, that are quaintly studded with oak trees and native greenery for a peaceful camp off the road.
