This was my first solo camping trip with my dog, and I couldn’t have been happier with my choice. Absolutely loved staying at Bear Hallow. The location is super easy to get to, close to the city yet wide and open enough to feel like you’re out in the wild. Emily and her husband are wonderful hosts; so kind and easygoing. They even saved me when I forgot my heavy blankets (duhhh, lol). The camp space is cozy, with absolutely incredible night skies and the bonus of gas fire pits, perfect for cold nights and cozy early morning, I also enjoyed the fresh eggs for breakfast, which were delicious! I left feeling completely recharged and so happy with my experience. I 100% recommend staying here. 💖

Absolutely amazing! From the moment of arrival I could tell Emily & the family have a true passion for the outdoor and hospitality. The land was stunning, some of the best I’ve camped in the Big Bear area. Nicely spread out, quiet, and lots of really cool hiking trails right at your tents door. The property is very clean and welcoming and lots of goodies for the nature lovers. Book multiple nights, you won’t want to leave!!

The whole environment felt very warm, friendly and exactly what we were looking for. Christine explained us how to get to her campsite , and was always quick responsive to our messages. Our campsite had a set of chair and table , and water in the hose which was so convenient because we were with a dog. We will definitely come back to Kings Hollow again. Great place ! Highly recommended for any level of camping experience.

Lovely spot with lovely hosts! Borders state forest land with a beautiful seasonal creek and ample camping space. Also an adorable bathroom in a newly furnished man cave. Also home to a very handsome duck.

We loved camping at Emily’s hip camp spot, she was super friendly and communication was very easy. The spot was quiet, spacious, and exactly what we were looking for our overnight trip to Big Bear Lake. Would definitely recommend staying here and we would come back again!

Weekend Trip to Bear Hollow Camp Site

Enjoyed our stay at Bear Hollow. The place is nice, with lots of open space, a couple of picnic tables, a horseshoe game area, leisure chairs and swing. Em and Murph were nice and provided great communication during our stay. We enjoyed the area. Their place also has chickens, and a nice vegetable garden that was a treat to look at. Bonus, if you like geocaching, there is one located a short distance from their place and made it a nice activity for kids.

Where to go

California Citrus State Historic Park

Ax the apples and sip some citrus at California Citrus State Historic Park about an hour north of Apple Valley. Despite no camping directly in the park, there are plenty of options in the surrounding areas. Campers won’t need to go far before finding cabin rentals, tent sites, full RV hookups, and mountain retreats. Open year-round, this gracious grove provides the perfect place to kick back, relax, and enjoy some juice. Greeted by an old-fashioned juice stand, visitors can book guided tasting tours of the orchards, explore exhibits in the museum, or test their treasure-hunting skills with some geocaching.

Holcomb Valley

Head about an hour southeast to Holcomb Valley, and discover a piece of the past existing in the present. Once one of the richest gold-mining areas, travelers now trek here for camping, hiking, rock climbing, and water sports. Work your way up to Holcomb Crossing Group Camping with an elevation of 5,292 feet, marvel at the mountainous campsites, or tuck away into the trees. As an added bonus, explore some spooky sites in the nearby ghost town of Belleville.

Mojave Narrows Regional Park

Grab some fishing rods, and saddle up the horses as you head to Mojave Narrows Regional Park. With surrounding lakes and an on-site splash pad, this campground is a great way to cool things down in the desert sun. Tent sites on the shoreline of Horseshoe Lake, access to fully-equipped RV spots, or group Equestrian-style adventures let campers take to nature in whatever floats their boat—literally! Horseshoe Lake and Pelican Lake make this the perfect park for canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding.

When to go

Camping near Apple Valley in April, May, September, and October is best, as these shoulder season months offer the beginning and end of warmer weather with a chance of seeing the springtime desert bloom in April and May. The Apple Valley climate is welcoming year-round, and draws campers in for every season to rest, recharge, and breathe in the open air.
